Ease of Use and Cleaning

Why the Mossberg 500 shotgun is so popular.

The Mossberg 500 is a rugged shotgun that is designed for use in harsh conditions. While almost no weapon is fully "mud" friendly, the Mossberg 500 is pretty close. The 500 series is designed to be easy to use and easy to clean and maintain.

All Mossberg 500 shotguns have interchangeable barrels which can be removed and changed quickly without any tools. This allows for varied uses of the 500 depending upon your application.

Almost all of the Mossberg 500 models are similar in design. They use a dual action bar which is less likely to bind and a single lock lug to secure the breech. The "magazine" for shells is located below the barrel and shells are fed into the chamber with a pump action.

There are numerous options for this shotgun, from flashlight mounts to various sights and slings.

The Model 500 Mossberg series describes the pump shotguns that are designed to chamber 3" shells. The standard Mossberg 500 will hold up to five 2 3/4" shells or four 3" shells with one in the chamber.

The Mossberg 500 comes in 12 gauge, 20 gauge and .410 bore with the 12 gauge being the most popular model.

The Mossberg 500 is also very popular amongst the sport shooting crowd for turkey shoots and target shooting.

Two Categories of the Mossberg 500

Two styles for general use.

The Mossberg 500 is a popular shotgun for hunters, target shooters, military and law enforcement. However, there are two general categories that a factory Mossberg 500 comes in for the general public.

The field model has various barrel lengths and finishes and can be used for numerous purposes. Turkey hunting, waterfowl or upland game hunting or slug usage are the most popular uses of the field model. The field models generally come with interchangeable choke tubes and rib vents in the barrel. The slug models come with rifle sights or scope mounts and generally have a smooth cylinder bore.

The second category is the special purpose model. These Mossberg 500 models are intended for self-defense, police or military usage. The only two models that fall into this category are the Mossberg 590 and the eight (8) shot model 500. These also have short barrels ranging from 18 1/2" to 20" depending on the shot load.

Some of the special purpose models are not available for purchase by the general public and require special permits to order them. Generally speaking, the special purpose Mossberg 500 models are reserved for military or police applications.

The Mossberg 500 HS410 is one exception to this rule. It is a .410 gauge shotgun that is designed for personal protection and comes with an 18 1/2" barrel. Even though is is the least powerful shotgun when compared to a 12 or 20 gauge, the short barrel and spreader choke allow for a wide pattern for home defense.
