Santa Claus
Santa Claus - Saint Nicholas, Sinterklaas, Father Christmas or Kris Kringle - or simply Santa is a figure who brings gifts to all good childs during the late evening and night hours of Christmas Eve in western cultures. In Germany (my home country) we call him Weihnachtsmann and the 24st of December is Heiligabend. Usually at Heiligaben or 1st Weihnachtstag (25th) the children are getting the gifts.

Christmas ornaments
The ornaments are reused in our family for a long time. Some of our ornaments are from my parents :) and we still use them. But usually we decorate our tree with very small wooden toys, red baubles and very small lights.
Bauble
The bauble is a decoration which is very popular for a long time now. The first glass baubles were made in Lauscha (Germany) by Hans Greiger. He produced garlands of glass beads and thin figures to decorate the tree. These decorationes were highly popular and highly skilled artists made them with clay molds.
Glass tubes were heated over a flame and then inserted into a clay mold. Then the glass was blown into the shape of the mold. The first original ornaments were fruits and nuts.
When the glass was cold again, a silver nitrate solution was swirled into it.That was a technic which was developed by Justus von Liebig about 1850. When that solution was dry the baubles / ornaments were decorated with hand painted designs and a top and hook were added.
