Books That Changed People's Lives

On November 20, 1991, the Library of Congress and the Book-of-the-Month Club released a list of the books that had the most influence on people's lives. At the top of the list was the Bible, followed by the highly influential Atlas Shrugged. Below is a list of the Top 5 books that were listed on the list. The complete list of titles can be found at the link NYTimes article link below. Most of these books are also available in Audiobook Format

Top 5 Most Influential Books (Library of Congress List)

Looking through the list below, I feel very fortunate to have had the opportunity to read three of the top five most influential books of all time (The Bible, Atlas Shrugged, and The Lord of the Rings.) In my case, I can honestly say that Atlas Shrugged has had more positive influence on my life than any other book. Since the Library of Congress survey was conducted around twenty years ago, I'm curious to see what you think of this list. After this list, I have included a section for you to vote on the book that had the most influence on your life.

Don't forget to vote on your favorite book after this list.

What makes a book influential?

Which book changed your life the most? How is your life different because you read this book?

That is a fascinating list! I also read Ayn Rand and the Bible and would agree that the former had more of an impact on my life. For me, Gift from the Sea would be in my top ten as well - a really inspirational book given the context in which it was written. As a mother and woman it really helped me understand about attachment and the importance of balance in my life. My own blog at www.mendabrokenheart.net expands on the lessons I learned from Lindburgh. I would include Shantaram by Gregory David Roberts it was one of the most seductively well written books I have ever read and the human dimension just stunning. What did I learn from it? All about forgiveness. Highly recommend it.
