Your most prized possession

One of the really common questions people ask each other is what is your most prized possession. There are a lot of ways to ask this, but of course the asnwers will change a lot. It's even been a topic on Squid Summer School!

Here's a look at a few way that question gets asked, and a few answers, not all deadly serious.

Why all the questions?

What would you save?

The reason behind all the odd questions is because it can been seen as rather rude to walk up to someone and ask what their most prized possession is, and frankly you are unlikely to get a truthful answer.

Seriously, how many people are going to answer "My bearer bonds hidden in the safe"? Even if its the truth, and those really would be the first thing they would go for in a fire. Likewise, some awards or items are personal. By hiding it as a game, any offense can be diverted.

Unfortunately these questions are now occassionally even asked at interviews to test the way you think, so coming up with answers is surprisingly important.

In a fire...

...What would you save?

"If your house was on fire, and you could rescue one item, what would it be?"

This is probably the most common ways to ask this question. It's often accompanied by the qualifier of "Not including family or pets". I've always had a problem with this, because my answer would be myself.

After many years of fire safety drills its been pretty much drummed into me that in a house fire there are three rules:

  • Get Out

  • Stay Out

  • Don't Go Back

Your property is replaceable, but you only get one life.

On a lighter note, the smart-alec answer to what you remove is of course "the fire".

And remember, no pets, friends, or family. Actually, for purposes of the plexo - no living creatures. Risking your life to save a life makes too much sense.

On a desert island

What would you take to a desert Island

"If you were stranded on a desert island for a year, which item would you take?"

This is another common one, to the extent that it got its own show "Desert Island Discs". The premise of Desert Island Discs is that you have to choose albums to take to a desert island listen to - either on your MP3 player or presumably the desert island has a stereo system...

Caveats often get added limiting this to books, after some smart answers became common:

  • A GPS Sat phone, fully working with power
  • A fully equipped yacht
  • insert choice of known survival specialist here

You can probably guess my answer would be the top one...

What would you take?

Which book would you like on a desert island.

OK, so if all your living needs were provided for, and you could only take one book, what would you take with you to a desert island?

My truthful answer to this one (as long as all living needs were provided) would be a large blank notepad big enough to last me the whole time I was there. I've always found writing more enjoyable than reading one book repeatedly, and this way I always have a new story to tell.

Your weapon is your most important possession, because most strategy boils down to killing monsters before they kill you. If you're having trouble, you probably don't have a good enough weapon, and should visit the auction house.

My honest answer

My most prized possession

It's All About Character

I would say my most prized possession is something that cannot be stolen, taken or lost, although I could squander it or throw it away.

Integrity, or Character as it used to be called, is more important than many people think. You can rise or fall based on your reputation and actions, and with the rise of social networking anything you do can be seen around the world.

Since it's not a physical possession, this is rarely accepted as an answer, but it's the truthful one. Without that, nothing that you do counts for anything.

However to stay within the rules at interviews who insist on physical items, I'm stuck with asking for my second choice:

A pen, and a really big notepad!
