The Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants
The Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants
By Ann Brashares
Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants (Sisterhood of Traveling Pants, Book 1)
Amazon Price: $0.75 (as of 06/03/2012)![]()
They were just a soft, ordinary pair of thrift-shop jeans until the four girls took turns trying them on--four girls, that is, who are close friends, about to be parted for the summer, with very different sizes and builds, not to mention backgrounds and personalities. Yet the pants settle on each girl's hips perfectly, making her look sexy and long-legged and feel confident as a teenager can feel. "These are magical Pants!" they realize, and so they make a pact to share them equally, to mail them back and forth over the summer from wherever they are. Beautiful, distant Lena is going to Greece to be with her grandparents; strong, athletic Bridget is off to soccer camp in Baja, California; hot-tempered Carmen plans to have her divorced father all to herself in South Carolina; and Tibby the rebel will be left at home to slave for minimum wage at Wallman's.
Who Moved My Cheese?
Who Moved My Cheese?
By Spencer Johnson
Who Moved My Cheese?: An Amazing Way to Deal with Change in Your Work and in Your Life
Amazon Price: $3.50 (as of 06/04/2012)![]()
This is a parable that takes place in a maze. Four beings live in that maze: Sniff and Scurry are mice--nonanalytical and nonjudgmental, they just want cheese and are willing to do whatever it takes to get it. Hem and Haw are "littlepeople," mouse-size humans who have an entirely different relationship with cheese. It's not just sustenance to them; it's their self-image. Their lives and belief systems are built around the cheese they've found. Most of us reading the story will see the cheese as something related to our livelihoods--our jobs, our career paths, the industries we work in--although it can stand for anything, from health to relationships. The point of the story is that we have to be alert to changes in the cheese, and be prepared to go running off in search of new sources of cheese when the cheese we have runs out.

The Flat-Footed Flies of Europe
By Peter J. Chandler
The Flat-Footed Flies: (Diptera: Opetiidae and Platypezidae) of Europe (Fauna Entomologica Scandinavica)
Amazon Price: $66.99 (as of 06/03/2012)![]()
The Flat-footed Flies (Diptera: Opetiidae and Platypezidae) of Europe presents a detailed account of the taxonomy, biology and distribution of the 44 European species of Opetiidae and Platypezidae. Two of these are here described as new to science. Known larvae develop in the larger fungi; adults are honey-dew feeders on broad leaves. Both families are characterised and proposals on their relationships and phylogeny are discussed. All European species are keyed and described in detail. Adult and larval biology are reviewed. The provincial distribution of 35 species occurring in Fennoscandia and Denmark is listed in a detailed catalogue. The work presents identification keys to genera and species and for each species descriptions and accounts of its nomenclature, biology and distribution. Known early stages are keyed to genera and described under each species.

A Trip across America with Einstein's Brain
By Michael Paterniti
Driving Mr. Albert: A Trip Across America with Einstein's Brain
Amazon Price: $2.07 (as of 06/03/2012)![]()
The adventures of an unlikely threesome--a freelance writer, an elderly pathologist, and Albert Einstein's brain--on a cross-country expedition intended to set the story of this specimen-cum-relic straight once and for all. After Thomas Harvey performed Einstein's autopsy in 1955, he made off with the key body part. His claims that he was studying the specimen and would publish his findings never bore fruit, and the doctor fell from grace. The brain, though, became the subject of many an urban legend, and Harvey was transformed into a modern Robin Hood, having snatched neurological riches from the establishment and distributed them piecemeal to the curious and the faithful around the world.

Teaching a Stone to Talk
Teaching a Stone to Talk
By Annie Dillard
Teaching a Stone to Talk: Expeditions and Encounters
Amazon Price: $5.92 (as of 06/03/2012)![]()
A well crafted and literary set of short stories; most of them being autobiographical. But the author does something special in this book. Her stories all center around the physical, mixed with the spiritual, mixed with the metaphysical, both alone and in concert, and finally, in the way they seem to co-exist, at least to her perception and observation. The substance of her plot is that the events just happen, the reasons, she tells us, are personal, and mostly uncontrollable. But they ARE. They exist temporally, spiritually, physically, and metaphysically all at the same time. How each of us sees these things is a bit like Albert Einstein's General and Special Theories of Relativity.
In Search of Lost Time
In Search of Lost Time
By Derek York
In Search of Lost Time
Amazon Price: $7.19 (as of 06/03/2012)![]()
This book discusses the mind-bending universe of the special and general theories of relativity, the ghostly world of quantum mechanics, and the unpredictable haunts of chaos. It explores the pyramids of Egypt, Stonehenge, and the South China plain; the universities of Cambridge, McGill, and Chicago; the Patent Office in Berne; and back to the Ethiopian desert on the banks of the Awash River. Companions to share and illuminate the path range from Jonathan Swift's Gulliver's Travels and Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland to J.B. Priestley's Dangerous Corner. It also presents the father of master-spy Kim Philby in the Empty Quarter of Arabia, the fantasist Velikovsky in the clouds, and Newton, Darwin, Rutherford, Einstein and the great Earth scientists of this century who fathomed the depths of lost time and discovered the age of the Earth. Written in an engaging, nontechnical style, this book will delight and amaze all who encounter it.

- I have actually read four of these books. Annie Dillard is my favorite of the group. I am always intrigued, too, by anything Oliver Sacks writes. I would vote for the following new title as one that fits your "most strange book titles" collection: We Are All Weird (http://www.squidoo.com/we-are-all-weird-seth-godin).
