Cartoon: What do Java programmers thinks about smoking?
A Java developer is smoking a cigarette and blowing smoke rings into the air. His girlfriend becomes irritated with the smoke and says:

Adopt a JSR
What's new in the Java World
An overall guideline for this program is that we want to gather up the enthusiasm and skill sets of Java developers around the world, but then focus their efforts at specific areas within JSRs. For example, this means that for the latest complex language features in Java 8 we'll encourage most 'Adopt a JSR' members to try the latest builds, evangelise the betas to major open source projects and to provide feedback on day-to-day usage. A smaller number of JUG members who are really qualified in the area of language design (if you think syntax is the important bit, then this probably isn't you) will be encouraged to contribute more directly. This of course includes enthusiasts who are willing to put in the time to really learn about this stuff. As Yara from SouJava pointed out at Devoxx, this is a great opportunity to also mentor budding experts in the various JSRs, so that there is a path for those who want to travel it.Do it!
How to install the new LiveRebel 2.0
ZeroTurnaround is pleased to announce the release of LiveRebel 2.0 (http://liverebel.com), a hot update solution for production environments that lets operations teams instantly roll out and roll back live deployed applications in production with zero downtime.
"With this 2.0 release, we are aiming to take a bigger share of the Continuous Delivery and Continuous Deployment sectors, which still have yet to see an overarching solution that can deliver what is promised," explained Jevgeni Kabanov, ZeroTurnaround CEO and Founder. "LiveRebel 2.0 is an out-of-the-box solution to end slow, inefficient production deployment processes that often happen at 3 AM by overworked operations staff."

State Does Not Belong In The Code
by Bozhidar Bozhanov
What is "state" in your web application? It's the data that gets stored (regardless of the destination - memory, database, file-system). The application itself must not store any state in the code. This means your classes should only have fields with objects that are also stateless. In other words - you should not store anything in your services, DAOs or controllers during the program flow. This is a complete "must" for your service layer. Why?

What's new with Atom Hopper (A Java based ATOM server)
by Chad Lung
Atom Hopper is a Java based ATOM publishing server based on Apache Abdera. You can read some of my previous articles here and the full source code can be found here as well as the up to date wiki. Today I'm going to discuss some of the new features that have been added and what is happening in general.
As of the date of this article we are actively testing the latest build of Atom Hopper which we are calling a release candidate at this point. As you can tell by the release notes we've been incrementally fixing bugs and adding features.

Secure JSON Services with Play Scala and SecureSocial
by Matt Raible
Last November, I traveled to Antwerp to speak at Devoxx. After my talk on HTML5 with Play Scala, Mattias Karlsson approached me and we had a chat about doing the same talk at Jfokus in Stockholm. I agreed and we began talking details after Trish and I returned to the US.
I wrote this article on a plane between Denver and Seattle and will be hopping over the North Pole to Stockholm via Iceland tonight. For the past couple of weeks, I've been updating my Play More! HTML5/mobile app to add some new features. Most notably, I wanted to upgrade to Play 2.0, create JSON services and add authentication.
