Video Games, a Brief Introduction

The video game industry is on a constant rise, even when it has a drop in revenue, the industry itself is still growing faster and faster day by day. Video games come in many forms. We have console gaming, PC gaming, online gaming, browser based games, MMORPGs, and social gaming (Facebook, FourSquare, etc). Gaming can be a great stress release, hobby, pastime, an exercise routine, and even a job!

Gaming really is for everyone!

Types of Video Games include:

1. Standard Console Gaming - Using hardware hooked up to your TV to play your game. These have been around for the longest, dating back to the 70s and 80s where you had machines like Pong, Atari 2600, Magnavox Odyssey, etc...

2. PC Gamer - Use your computer to play games

3. MMORPGs - MMO stands for Massively Multiplayer Online. These games consist of typically hundreds, thousands, or even tens of thousands of players, playing together, in a World. A few famous titles include Ultima Online (the first MMORPG to really hit it off), Everquest, World of Warcraft, EVE Online, the list really goes on for a long time. Currently there are over 100 "MMORPGs" available. Most come with a hefty subscription ranging from $5 to $15 a month, but there are many free options available too.

4. Browser Gaming - This includes games that are completely run out of your browsers, some popular titles include Runescape and HoboWars. These games are usually free to play, but paying allows you to gain a clear advantage over those who opt out of paying.

5. Social Gaming - This is still fairly new to us, but it's essentially games you find on Facebook, such as Farmville and MafiaWars. These games are usually made to be very affordable to play (typically they are free to play, but you can spend money to get some type of extra benefits). The goal of these game producers is to create an addicting system with some type of "Ladder" that people can climb, purely for bragging rights and these games become viral quickly due to the nature of Facebook

Nintendo DSi / DSiXL

hunksparrow says:

Actually I love the 3DS, I've been waiting a long time to play a Nintendo Street Fighter game again. Also, I can't wait for the new (actually remake) of Zelda: Ocarina of Time.

Tipi says:

I'll trust your judgement.

thedan1984 says:

Nintendo DS has some amazing games and remakes that I absolutely love. The ability to play GBA games on it also makes it a very complete and backwards compatible system, allowing me to play more games, without having to own as many handhelds.

Ok, I admit it! I know nothing, well very little, about the gaming world. I did vote where I could according to how I know my son would vote. I know when he moved into the college dorm, he bought another xbox 360 so he would have in the dorm and at home. The games were a little trickier for me. I know he loves Zelda, so that was the best I could do :) Now, you tell me. Which will he want for his birthday this year. We will start with it being an xBox even thought he has the wii too. He loves WOW, I am pretty sure he still plays it. I know we still pay the monthly charge. I have never seen him play any army type games. Is that enough infor. to make the call?

Btw, thanks for the heads up for this year!
