Hard Work, Devotion, and Faith

St. Francis X. Cabrini, more popularly called Mother Cabrini, was the first citizen of the United States to be declared a Saint (canonized) by the Roman Catholic Church. She worked for a time in the mountains near Golden, Colorado where she founded a summer camp for Denver orphans. There, at the base of a steep hill, the Lord directed her to plant her walking stick in to the earth and a spring of water poured forth and still does to this day.

My Blessings

Growing up in a Catholic family near Denver, Mother Cabrini was a tangible saint to me. I knew people who had met the remarkable woman. I spent many days making the pilgrimage to her shrine just west of the city. As a token of thanksgiving for the birth of each of my children, I took my newborns to the shrine and climbed the steps up the mountain to the statue of our Lord with each of them in my arms. They were all baptized with water from the holy spring which God revealed to the Saint at the base of the hill.

My life is filled with so many blessings, I am thankfull each and every day. In honor of making my 100th lens here on Squidoo, I would also like to give thanks and honor Mother Cabrini - the woman and the holy saint. A portion of the purchase price from sales of items on this page directly benefit the SOciety for Orphaned Children in Canada. Blessings and thanks to all who read this. Peace be with you.

All "Polaroid" photos on this page were taken during my youngest nephew's second pilgrimage to the shrine after his birth. They were taken by my oldest daughter, then 11.

Hardship and Faith

Saint Frances Xavier Cabrini (1850-1917)

"I CAN DO ALL THINGS THROUGH HIM WHO STRENGTHENS ME." A tribute to St. Frances Xavier Cabrini (Mother Cabrini), the first American citizen to be declared a saint. She was born on July 15, 1850 in Sant'Angelo Lodigiano, Italy, the youngest of 13 children. She took religious vows in 1877, and in 1880 was one of the founders of the Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. After immigrating to the USA in 1889, she soon founded an orphanage in West Park, New York. During her 28 years in America she worked with great love and dedication for the poor and needy, particularly the Italian immigrants. At a time when there were few resources and government programs for the poor, it is indeed amazing (and miraculous) that she founded a total of 67 institutions (hospitals, schools, and orphanages). She died in Chicago on December 22, 1917, was beatified on November 13, 1938, and was canonized by Pope Pius XII on July 7, 1946. She is the patron saint of immigrants and hospital administrators.

Catholicism and the Saints

Canonization (or canonisation) is the act by which a particular Christian church or group declares a deceased person to be a saint and is included in the canon, or list, of recognized saints. Originally, individuals were recognized as saints without any formal process.

In the Catholic Church (both the Western and Eastern Churches) the act of canonization is reserved to the Holy See and occurs at the conclusion of a long process requiring extensive proof that the person proposed for canonization lived and died in such an exemplary and holy way that he or she is worthy to be recognized as a saint. The Church's official recognition of sanctity implies that the persons are now in heavenly glory, that they may be publicly invoked and mentioned officially in the liturgy of the Church, most especially in the Litany of the Saints. Other Christian churches still follow the older practice (see, for instance, below on Eastern Orthodox practice).

Canonization, whether formal or informal, does not make someone a saint: it is only a declaration that the person is a saint and was a saint even before canonization.

In the Catholic Church, canonization involves a decree that allows veneration of the saint in the liturgy of the Roman Rite throughout the world. For permission to venerate on a local level, only beatification is needed, not canonization."Beatification, in the present discipline, differs from canonization in this: that the former implies (1) a locally restricted, not a universal, permission to venerate, which is (2) a mere permission, and no precept; while canonization implies a universal precept" (Beccari, Camillo. "Beatification and Canonization" The Catholic Encyclopedia. Vol. 2. New York: Robert Appleton Company, 1907. Retrieved 27 May 2009).

Here's the inspiring story of Mother Cabrini, the first American citizen to be declared a saint. As a child growing up in Italy, she dreamed of one day becoming a missionary. But how-and where-God's plan for her finally came about was a surprise, even to her! Written with authority by two sisters of the Order Mother Cabrini founded, the Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart, this exciting book will introduce children to one of our most beloved American saints.

Peace Be With You

A remarkable woman -- I did not know that Mother Cabrini was the "first American citizen to be canonized by the Roman Catholic Church." Pretty awesome that you were able to make the pilgrimage to her shrine. My grandparents made a sort of pilgrimage each year to Carey, Ohio. According to Wikipedia, "The Basilica and National Shrine of Our Lady of Consolation can be found here. There is an annual gathering of Catholics, mainly from the Middle East, who come from around the country on the Feast of the Assumption of Mary. During this gathering, chanting can be heard even from across town, and thousands of people camp in public parks and empty lots to attend the religious procession." He had a stroke that he had recovered from and felt that it was important to visit there each year.
