Who is Mother Gothel From Disney's Tangled

Ranked #310 in Entertainment, #3,410 overall

The villain of Tangled, the witch who locked Rapunzel away in the tower

Mother Gothel is the wicked witch of Tangled, the film from Disney retelling the fairytale story of Rapunzel. Voiced by Donna Murphy, Mother Gothel is a slinky, sexy witch who is incredibly vain, manipulative and protective of Rapunzel. She stays young through the power of Rapunzel's magic hair.

Rapunzel's mother ate a healing flower that Mother Gothel knew about, and imbued her baby daughter with magic. On finding that the magic faded when the hair was cut, Mother Gothel stole the baby. As far Rapunzel knows, Mother Gothel is her real mother.

She's an interesting character - incredibly manipulative, she constantly guilt trips Rapunzel and undercuts her self-confidence in order to keep her in the tower, and it's often hard to tell if she really cares for the girl, after raising her for eighteen years, and sees her as her own daughter, or if she just sees her as a breathing, talking, golden Fountain of Youth. After Rapunzel leaves, Mother Gothel gets more and more desperate and finally, insane, as her little girl (and/or the magic hair) slips out of her hands.

The original stories of Rapunzel (of which there are a lot of different versions!) Link to page two - Mother Gothel cosplays and design retell the story in a variety of ways - a witch, good, bad, a tower, magic, no magic, and typically Rapunzel fell pregnant, enraging her adoptive 'Mother'. Gothel actually means "godmother" in the Southwestern dialects of German (from the earlier "gott helt" - 'God held' - held before God at baptism). Much like Baba Yaga, the stock figure of 'Mother Gothel' turned up in a lot of different folk stories.

The character of Mother Gothel is a standard figure through the various Rapunzel stories - not always evil, often she has no motive save wanting a daughter. Disney has dropped the 'stealing rampion from the garden for the sake of pregnant cravings' part of the story, either to make the witch more clearly evil, or because why would a Queen need to steal? (and of course Rapunzel had to be a Princess).

Naturally optimistic and acquiescent, Rapunzel (Mandy Moore) rarely complains about her circumstances, but for her 18th birthday she longs to leave the tower to see the floating lights that appear every year on her birthday. Her mother (Donna Murphy) refuses her request, but when thief Flynn Ryder (Zachary Levi) climbs the tower to escape his pursuers, Rapunzel (once she's conked him on the head with a skillet multiple times) impulsively decides to trust the young man and convinces him to help her escape to see the floating lights.

The Character of Mother Gothel

"You want me to the bad guy? Fine, now I'm the bad guy."

The Disney character card for Mother Gothel

"Manipulative and over- protective, Mother Gothel stole Rapunzel from her parents and locked her in a tower so the world would never know of the power of her magical hair, which she uses to remain young. Mother Gothel uses subtle jabs, over- the- top guilt trips and refrains of " Mother Knows Best" to keep Rapunzel from leaving the tower. But when she begins to separate herself, Mother Gothel slowly descends into madness and will stop at nothing to get her little girl back."

dramatic witch cloak mother gothel from tangledBeautiful, manipulative, overprotective, evil, jealous, arrogant, greedy, selfish, rude, vain and spiteful are just a few of the words one can use to describe Mother Gothel! She is out to look after herself, and doesn't really care about anything else. She's also extremely theatrical, and melodramatic, loves her own jokes and is self-confident enough not to care if nobody else gets the funny bit. She's mature and sexy and has been described as a 'classic Jewish mama' - or looking like Cher!

Why 'Mother' Gothel?
Mother Gothel was originally not a real name - it was a term, 'god mother', much as one would say 'mother' as an honorific, or polite term to an old woman. In Tangled, she's only a 'Mother' to Rapunzel, although she may have picked the name up and had it stick.

Is Mother Gothel A Witch?

Or is she just an 'ordinary' woman?

Traditionally, Mother Gothel is a witch - but not always. In the Brothers Grimm version of Rapunzel (the best known), she is a witch, although no actual evidence is presented. In various other stories in which Mother Gothel appears (check out the alternative Rapunzel stories page for more information), she is sometimes a witch, sometimes just a rich (powerful) lady, sometimes of uncertain status.

Chibi Cartoon Mother Gothel Fan ArtIn Tangled, Gothel shows very little actual magic - she understands how to make the flower work, but how does she know? Chance and desperation, or more arcane knowledge? Her activities away from Rapunzel's tower are very mysterious. She could be doing anything!

Her behaviour is very 'witchy' - melodrama, swooping around, lurking in darkness and flapping of cloaks. Unlike most Disney villains, she doesn't have any kind of familiar - she's a very 'alone' character. It's possible Rapunzel becomes her 'familiar' in a way! Of course, she probably outlives any pets she picks up...

Is Mother Gothel actually a (wicked) witch?

Yes, she was a witch. The tower hidden in the green, and all that knowledge of flowers and herbs... witch!

No way. She may have been evil and manipulative, but a witch she was not. I believe that she was just very intelligent from living hundreds of years. Although she may have acted a bit witchy, she wasn't one.

Mother Gothel and Rapunzel - fan art colouring of concept sketch by Glen KeaneSo how old is Mother Gothel?

Centuries, at least! She kept herself young and alive for a very long time before losing the magic flower - after that, she aged rapidly until she stole away baby Rapunzel, and lived only the next eighteen years of Rapunzel's life. She died of 'age', crumbling into dust when the magic was lost after Rapunzel's hair was cut.

By the time of the queen falling ill she was completely dependent on the flower - if she stayed away from it, or lost it, she'd die a slow and horrible death from rapid aging.

Mother Gothel's Motivations

The secret of Immortality

Old Mother Gothel, before she found the secret of immortality

Disney Tangled fanart of Mother Gothel hugging Rapunzel - Gothel and Punzie by Frankie-Freak3 on DeviantART
Vanity, fear of age, fear of dying - powerful motivations that have driven a hundred fantasy plots, would-be gods, mages and witches, from those who seek the vampire's embrace to those who attempt godhood. Even in real human history, the myth and lure of immortality has driven a thousand mad schemes, treks and dreams.

In stories, people who find some kind of immortality, or chase it, usually become the 'bad' guys' for failing to accept the inevitable and hurting others for it. Mother Gothel's turning point of evil came when she chose to steal the baby - before that, her quest for immortality harmed no one.

Could You Have Been Mother Gothel?

mother gothel hugging rapaunzel fan art from Disney's Tangled

Whether by telling people about the flower, or letting the world know of the magic in Rapunzel's hair, would sharing her knowledge have brought any good?

Tangled traditional fan art of Gothelbr /
by ~CenturyHazeThink about it - would she have been able to retain access to it? Would someone else more powerful (like, say... a King and his soldiers) have taken it? Would she have set herself up using its power or been beaten down? All it would have taken was one person with power and she'd have lost it forever. Alternately, I can see a very unhealthy 'cult' of immortality, wholly dependent on the flower, springing up in some grotesque alternative to Gothel's relationship with Rapunzel.

Mother Gothel discovered the secret of immortality. Would you have been willing to share it? Could you?

Yes! Tell the world!

I would make the flower into a potion and then put it into little botttles and sell them. I would make a fortune!

NidhiRajat says:

i think it is true!!!

my_never_bored_hands says:

It's not only give a chance of immortality, the flower has power to heal... And it'd definitely would save a lot of people lives.... if such flower/herb exist.

Katja says:

One life is good enough for me, I would probably destroy the flower so it's powers wouldn't be abused like Mother Gothel did.

Ariel says:

I would share it because I'm sure that everyone would want to stay young forever. As long as they didn't try to keep that power for themselves, I wouldn't mind sharing.

No - it would only be stolen or broken

Pongo53 says:

I haven't so far. Maybe one day I will share it. LOTS of time to decide.

mypotlpeople says:

Probably not. It would probably be destroyed by the masses of people trying to get their hands on it.

no because people like being young don't you want to be young think about it because this question might help you. Because I say when you turn very old you can die forever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.

Cat says:

No, I don't think I could trust anyone with it. I might share it with few select people, but only those I could trust who wouldn't tell anyone else about it. The government would no doubt try to swoop in and take it from me if people knew.

kenn says:

yes...who wouldn't want to live forever and be young and vital...in all reality none of us have enough time to do all the thing's we want to do!!! or spend enough time with the people and thing's we love. So once again, I would love to be immortal, I still have to much to see and do...I would only share it with a select few of people...like my family, all i have is my parents, a brother,sis-in-law and one nephew and one neice...and a very special person in my life, all i would love to spent infinity with.

Did Mother Gothel Love Rapunzel?

Or did she only want her magic?

As TVTropes puts it, was Mother Gothel a Complete Monster or Broken Bird? A cruel woman who didn't care for Rapunzel herself at all or did she become the mask at some point?

What do you think? Did Mother Gothel care about Rapunzel at all?

Loading Fetching blurbs now... please stand by

Yes - she saw Rapunzel as her daughter!

Suze05 says:

I think she did love her. She raised her, she tried to make her happy and treated her like a daughter, as long as she stayed in that tower and kept healing her anyway. When she was threatened with losing her, and her magic hair, I think she just kind of panicked. She was manipulative, kinda selfish, and desperate, but she did love her.

WriterJanis says:

To a certain degree.

carter says:

she loved repunzel for awhile but then she realized that she grew up and was going to turn on her

NidhiRajat says:

yes ofcourse...............

Cat says:

There were some scenes that it was clear she loved Rapunzel and just wasn't the best mother. The scene where she knew Rapunzel was lost, there was just something in her voice that she really was worried about Rapunzel, I felt. Then she knew she was safe and it was all about keeping her. Also, she could easily have kept Rapunzel as a prisoner, but she chose to raise her as her own and tried to make her comfortable and happy. Also **minor spoiler here** at the end she gave in to Rapunzel's pleas, look at Gothel's face, she just wanted things to be the way they were--yes that included the hair, but also that she wanted Rapunzel to act like her daughter again. Mother Gothel wasn't the best mom, of course, over protective and belittling to keep her daughter in control, but I do believe that she came to love Rapunzel. The I love you so much, I love you more, I love you most, was too genuine to be just about the hair.

No - she only cared about herself

Worldgirl says:

She 's a Sociopath and...reminds me of my mother(and they Also both have the same first letter of their name haha )
So yeah till some degree she cared about Rapunzel but only if it didn't get in her way, cause at the end of the day she(Gothel) cares about what's BEST,. for herSELF
( I lived It, so I knowww bessst :P )

Annamadagan says:

She only liked her hair.

Tori says:

No way did Mother Gothel love Rapunzel. She killed the one true love of Rapunzel's life just so she could be young forever.

my_never_bored_hands says:

Mother Gothel was taking good care about Rapunzel's hair only, and that's including care of the girl herself (otherwise there would be no healthy hair :))

alita says:

no she lov only rapunzel hair

Mother Gothel has one main song - and a later reprise, both sung by Donna Murphy,. This refrain involves persuading Rapunzel to stay in the tower, because - after all - mother knows best. It's very dramatic, with lots of over-exaggerating of the terrible dangers, theatrics and cape-swishing, and deservedly joins the ranks of Disney villain songs.

Mother Gothel and Frollo

The Best Disney Villain Songs The majority of Disney classics are musicals, and every Disney film has an evil villain. Disney has created some truly memorable villains, and many of these villains get their chance to shine, terrify and steal the limelight in show-stopping musical numbers dedicated to them.

"I was going to offer you something worth one thousand crowns, would have made you rich beyond belief and that wasn't even the best part, oh well, c'est la vie. Enjoy your crown."

Every wicked Disney villain needs some kind of minion - Mother Gothel is somewhat unusual in that she seems very much alone. Either self-contained, or happy with Rapunzel, perhaps?

But after she sees that Rapunzel has escaped her, she gets increasingly more dangerous and wicked. She enlists the two thugs, the Stabbington brothers, to help her retrieve Rapunzel. In exchange, she offers them Flynn, who betrayed them at the beginning of the film and has a sizeable reward on his head.

Themes, Implications and Other Wordy Issues

A summary of some of the implications, talking points and viewpoints regarding the character of Mother Gothel

Mother Gothel putting out candles - Tangled GIF by omgtangledgifs

"Behind every young, virginal, naive, sweet, sensitive, meek, humble, beautiful, ... well, O.K., behind every PERFECT princess is an aging, manipulative, menopausal matriarch."
Mother Gothel... With A Materialistic Motive?

Mother GothelDisney is the master of unfortunate implications and their films have been reviled and lauded throughout history for sexism, feminism, anti-religion, conservatism, conformity, lack of family values, colonialism, misogyny... the list goes on. And most of them may actually be fair, but the point is, a cursory analysis of the discussions around any Disney film is rife with conflicting condemnations. So what is Tangled guilty of...? And what is it good at? (Obviously Disney is constrained by the original fairy tales - but considering how much liberty they do take with the stories, what remains is notable). Or you could ignore all this and just read about what Mother Gothel herself thinks the story is about.

To start with, this will just be a cursory list of anything Gothel-related.

  • Anti-parent/mother: Mother Gothel apparently typifies a stereotypical Jewish mother. Much has been made of how Disney 'hates' mothers and is attacking the overprotective mum, who can't let go of their child. Alternatively, it perfectly portrays that awkward period when kids turn into restless teenager and start clashing with their parents and running of with (literally) the first boy they ever meet. In this case a much older criminal.

Mother GothelDisney also apparently has a thing for abusive or useless/absent parents - I think Mufasa was the only one who was both plot-important and a good parent. Alternatively, this is knocking the theme of adoption, and the continued anti-Stepmother storyline. However it's also a standard set-up for drama, and to create problems for the main character to have to surmount.

  • Feminism: On the one hand, two strong female figures. On the other, one's crazy and evil and the other needs a male hero (Strong Women Are Always Evil in Disney) .
It DOES however, pass the Bechdel Test in that:
    1. it includes at least two women, (who are actually named!)
    2. who have at least one conversation
    3. about something other than a man or men.

  • Age: age is evil. Apparently. Although the fact that Gothel devotes so much energy to fighting it is also warped, so perhaps, age is not evil? Same as for vanity. Vanity is a sin?

  • The villain always dies - what happened to redemption? Alternative solutions?

  • Definitely an abusive relationship between Gothel and Rapunzel. You could also throw in a bit of Stockholm Syndrome.

  • Mother GothelFeminine wiles: both Mother Gothel and Rapunzel are incredibly manipulative. Rapunzel mostly uses being cute and innocent and pretty, will Mother Gothel has a ...wider and bitchier repertoire. But it's still manipulation (of course, this is probably realistic - Rapunzel is apparently used to using her only weapon (but why is that her only weapon?) and learned behaviours to manipulate the soft spots of Mother Gothel (which means that Mother Gothel cares about how Rapunzel feels).

  • Think of the children: Disney tends to sanitise the original stories to give them happy endings. Rapunzel no longer gets seduced and impregnated, the prince is no longer blinded, and there's no blood on the knife when Gothel stabs him (but weirdly, he does bleed... also, if you stab someone quickly with a very sharp and smooth knife, there wouldn't be that much blood - but there should still be a smear). And of course, her parents are still alive and rich and happy to see her.

  • Drug addiction: I'm amazed no-one has pointed this one out - Gothel was hopelessly addicted to the flower (and life) and would suffer terrible withdrawals (rapid aging and painful death) if she tried to give it up.
  • Rapunzel, please, stop with the mumbling. You know how I feel about the mumbling. Blah blah blah blah, it's very annoying! I'm just teasing, you're adorable. I love you so much, darling.

    Various screencaps of Mother Gothel

    Mother Gothel's Tropes

Recognished devices and conventions used and subverted in fiction that apply to Mother Gothel

Mother Gothel is a perfect case of Alternative Character Interpretation. Was she really evil? Did she REALLY love Rapunzel, even a little bit?

Mother Gothel brushing Rapunzel's hair fan art

While YMM definitely V with Mother Gothel, she's a textbook case of Neutral Evil. Almost every action can be clearly classified under manipulative or abusive. Aside from that, there are a whole range of other cliches, conventions, stereotypes and other traits from fiction that she embodies or subverts. She's a flamboyant, dramatic wicked witch and the following interesting tropes (a trope is a convention, mechanism, or potential cliche used in fiction) all apply.
    Abusive Parents
Mother Gothel is clearly of the emotionally abusive variety. Also see Hilariously Abusive Childhood. Also see Happily Adopted (subverted in Tangled) and Wicked Stepmother.
    Badass Normal
Rather than the villain being magically powerful, here Mother Gothel has no obvious powers, but simply used her own wits and luck to stay ahead.
    Beneath The Mask
Her real self was hidden behind the mask of loving mother, and her real intentions were not revealed until the end. Although it's possible she had a bit of Pet The Dog syndrome towards Rapunzel. But after her Villainous Breakdown, that all vanishes. Also see Witch In Sheep's Clothing
    The Bechdel Test
The Bechdel Test is a brief set of requirements indicating the level of independent female activity in a film or book. Tangled actually passes, due to conversations between Rapunzel and Mother Gothel, that aren't about men.
    Big No
The moment when a character realizes that something awful has happened, or notices that something awful is about to happen, and screams "NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!" I
    Black Cloak
Swooping around in an evil black cloak - as well as concealing her identity In The Hood describes Mother Gothel perfectly. The cloak also gives plenty of opportunities for Mother Gothel's classic move - the Cape Swish
    Blah Blah Blah
"Rapunzel, please, stop with the mumbling. You know how I feel about the mumbling. Blah blah blah blah, it's very annoying! I'm just teasing, you're adorable. I love you so much, darling."
    Blue Eyes
Mother Gothel fits the second category - icy, pirecing blue eyes -perfectly. Blue eyes are also often used for sophisticated magic users, and in some cultures can be seen as a sign of witchcraft, whose owners can control people
    Calling The Old Man Out
Rapunzel calls out Mother Gothel, eventually. Leading to an Oh Crap moment on Gothel's part.
    Chronic Backstabbing Disorder
Mother Gothel has a touch of these - the poor Stabbington brothers get all the knocks. And she's quite literally a Knife Nut. And then turns to Rapunzel and asks why did you make me stab him? "Now look what you've done, Rapunzel. Oh, don't worry. Our secret will die with him."
    Compassionate Critic
Is Mother Gothel ever anything else towards Rapunzel? (At least, until the mask comes of). And she's a master of the Stealth Insult.
    Dark Reprise
A song starts in sunshine, but has a dark reprise.
Her Villain Song, "Mother Knows Best", began fairly light hearted (at least on Mother Gothel's side - it's a clear case of Lyrical Dissonance). Later, she turns vicious and the song gets darker, when Rapunzel defies her, enhanced by Ominous Fog. In both songs she also jumps into Third Person Person.
    Disney Villain Death
Barely averted by Gothel dying of age (see Rapid Aging) first, but Disney villains tend to fall off things to their death a lot. Gothel's death also lands in the Nightmare Fuel trope.
    Evil Matriarch
"...Evil Matriarchs are completely convinced that they, and only they, know what's best for their children, and can be very controlling, manipulative, and perfectly willing to do anything they deem necessary for their children's sake, no matter how evil or destructive it may be. " She's also the stereotypical Jewish Mother. Of course, she also covers Mama Bear, My Beloved Smother and Manipulative Bitch.
    Evil Is Sexy
It sure is! Also see Grandma What Massive Hotness You Have and Hot Mom. Oh yeah, and she's certainly a Lady In Red.
    Expy - 'Exported Character'
Mother Gothel retains many traits of previous Disney villains
    e.g. 'eternal youth' - Yzma
Frollo's parenting technique (e.g. the songs Out There and Mother Knows Best)
Similarity in sexy evil to Malificent

She's also very similar to the version of Mother Gothel in Into The Woods played by Bernadette Peters (Into the Woods on Amazon and a clip from the show on YouTube
    Humans Are Bastards
Mother Gothel persuades Rapunzel of this, while exemplifying it herself (hypocrisy or belief?) as a Treacherous Advisor - she was also a Jerk Ass to Rapunzel.
    It's All About Me
Selfishness supreme. It's all about Mother Gothel staying young and lovely. And she sure is a Vain Sorceress. On the other hand, she's so Yandere towards Rapunzel that it's arguable her goals changed. Either way, she's obsessed.
    Non Singing Voice
Awesomely averted, with Donna Murphy doing her own singing.
    Really Seven Hundred Years Old
Self-explanatory! Although Mother Gothel pre-dates Rapunzel's kingdom by several centuries, her exact age is never given. Assuming she even remembers how old she is.

Rapunzel, do you know what I see in that mirror? I see a strong, confident, beautiful young lady.
    (beat)
Oh look, you're here too. (laughs) I'm just teasing, darling. Stop taking everything so seriously.

She does appear in the The Art of Tangled book, obviously, and she may appear in the various Rapunzel storybooks, but so far, she has nothing but the dolls to herself.

    The Art of Tangled

The Art of Tangled is an amazing artbook, and an absolute delight for art-lovers and Disney fans alike. It contains 160 pages of sketches, CGI, paintings and discussion, including the leaked concept artwork already on the net, to give you an idea of the quality - as well as much more! There's a lot more concept art of Mother Gothel on the next page, as well.

If it's out of stock on Amazon (and it sold out almost immediately everywhere, so if you want it you'll have to wait for more stock to arrive or jump into the pre-order queue (which is probably a safer route)), you can also order the Art of Tangled from The Book Depository (which has free global shipping!) (edit: oh hey, it's out of stock EVERYWHERE now)

Appearance of Mother Gothel in the Disney Tangled - Little Golden BookA scan from the Little Golden Book For Tangled shows that Mother Gothel definitely appears in the various storybooks that retell the Tangled story (from the Little Golden Book, to the upcoming graphic novel). Whether she gets to feature in any of the spin-off books, though, is not yet known...

The illustrator of the Little Golden Book, Victoria Ying, is one of the concept artists that worked on the film.
