Cosplaying Mother Gothel From Tangled

Mother Gothel's Design, Costume Analysis and Cosplay

Mother Gothel is the semi-immortal witch from the Disney version of Rapunzel, Tangled. This page analyses her costume design, collects screencaps and images to use as references, and gathers existing cosplays for would-be Mother Gothel cosplayers. Whether you're planning to make the 'real thing' from scratch, or you just need to know what kind of dress to dig out of the wardrobe for Halloween, this page should get you headed in the right direction!

Her design is definitely sexy - mature, with hips and cleavage, she could be anywhere between eighteen to (a young looking) forty, despite the whole 'regaining youth' angle. She has been described as looking both stereotypically Jewish and like Cher! When she ages, her hair gets progressively grayer and her face becomes more drawn and wrinkled.

Be warned - some of the screenshots and images available online are from concept and development art, so not always accurate I've tried to use only the film-accurate costume details and images here.

Mother Gothel only wears one outfit throughout the film, a red silk dress, with gold embroidery and jewellery. She also occasionally wears a great big hooded black cloak. In appearance, she is (when young) pale-skinned, pink-lipped and black haired. Her hair is frizzy, and she has a couple of short curly bits over the middle of her forehead. Her costume is actually a lot more medieval in style than the other characters in the film, which makes sense as she's both a lot older (by centuries) and seems to stick with one favourite outfit! Her colours are all very consistent - gold, red and black.

She wears gold earrings, a belt of the same material as the dress, looped through a gold circle, and slipper-like shoes. More importantly, she's officially dressed in the Renaissance style, so her dress can double as a Ren Faire outfit!

Mother Gothel's Physical Attributes

Costume aside, what does she LOOK like?

Mother Gothel
  • Average height
  • Bushy blue-black hair, just below shoulder length
  • Pale blue eyes
  • Fair skin
  • Curvy and busty - still very 'pretty' but clearly an adult
  • Red, black and gold themes to outfit
  • Make up (see Mother Gothel's Accessories and Props)

Lady Guinevere Renaissance Gown
List Price: $37.99

It has been confirmed by the directors who worked on Tangled that Gothel's dress is from the Renaissance era (about 400 years before Tangled, which apparently takes place in the 1780s).

For the closest match to her costume, without making it by hand, the Lady Guinevere Renaissance Gown is the best match (there's even a child's version!)

Main differences/points to look for in a dress:
  • The brocade belt over her hips is actually separate from the dress, and held with a golden circle. The actual belt/sash is more of the red material, edged with gold, but the doll and some pictures just make it all gold.
  • Square-scoop neckline, not diagonal, or curved. Gold brocade edges the neckline (see picture just below the costumes)
  • Arms are very drapey, but end just after the elbows
  • Dress material is red (obviously!), but sort of brocaded - a repeating pattern of diagonals, I think, or flowers. (see below for a closer look at the fabric)
  • Inside lining is an inverted version/same pattering, and pale yellow-gold.
  • The dress is long, almost covering the feet.

Below are other Possible Renaissance dresses and patterns for children and adults (NB: they can go out of stock fast around Halloween, which is one reason I'm linking to several options!)

Mother Gothel's Dress: Fabric Design and Colours

The dress fabric pattern and colour palette

A look at the patterns on the fabric of Mother Gothel's dress

Her dress is patterned - a repeating pattern of flowerlike starbursts and diagonals. The strips are vertical, alternating between 'infinity loop' in the middle of the diagonal, and what looks like a teardrop but could be a heart (possibly reminiscient of the flower and 'drop of sunlight' - and her potentially infinite/ever-renewing lifespan?)

The colours shift depending on the lighting, but the brightest red (top three colours in the colour palette) are from the promotional screenshots and brightest daylight, so most likely to be accurate. It's hard finding big enough screenshots! These are the best I've found so far

Mother Gothel's Dress: Gold Embroidery Patterns

The gold edging on Mother Gothel's Dress

The pattern of the gold embroidery edging Mother Gothel's dress

I thought this was really complicated, actually, but when I decided that I was going to be good and draw her properly - including all the detail - I had a closer look and realised - it's just a 'S' based doodle pattern. with a thin gold border! The one I doodle the most, in fact. So I started up ArtRage and doodled them again.

The neckline is loopy S's, turning into circles. Each is one s on its side, making up two circles. The background trim is black.

The belt is actually just single spaced vertical S's - any apparent variation is just caused by folds in the dress.

Her sleeves are edged in a pipeline of gold, and nothing else.

Close ups on Mother Gothel's cloak - embroidery, lining and clasp

The gold lining of her cloak is very visible as she falls of the tower

The gold lining of her cloak is very visible as she falls of the tower
Mother Gothel standing with her cloak closed - you can see the gold edging down the frontYou'll also need a black hooded cloak, with a lot of material to drape around, and a wide hood. It's lined with dark gold, but that may be tricky.

The embroidery around the hood and neck is exactly the same as the embroidery around the neckline - gold S loops, on a black background, edged in gold. This gold edging actually continues all the way down the front of the cloak - as you can see in the picture on the right - but it's rarely visible when she's actually moving around.

The clasp is two flat gold circles, held together by a chain (gold, of course!) The length is about to her ankles (shorter than the gown). It looks like it's made of wool (and that would be the most likely and practical).

Artemisia Designs offers this gold-lined, black velvet cloak for $60, which is almost ideal.

Luckily the standard available colour is black, and the large hood and medieval style is quite popular. A good quality cloak will cost around a hundred dollars or more, but cheap ones are readily available in the twenty dollar range.

This cloak by Artemia Designs is the closest match, because it's the only one with a gold lining. However, if you're any good at sewing, modifying a plain black cloak like the ones below would be easier and cheaper than making one from scratch.

Mother Gothel's Shoes

Mother Gothel wears pointy high-heeled boots, but her shoes tend to be hidden by her dress

Views of Mother Gothel's boots

You don't see her shoes much, but they're dark brown slipper-type-at-the-toe boots, clearly leather, and covered in tiny intricate embroidery of some kind (again, looks like more gold thread). That's all that you'll ever see anyway, but in a couple of shots you can see that they have heels (of course) and are actually boots (square heels, about halfway to the knee in height). It also looks like she has a silver buckle peeking out from under her dress in the top picture.

During "Mother Knows Best"

Mother Gothel's boots are visible as she rolls Rapunzel up in her hair

You do get a couple of good visuals on her shoes during her first visit to the nearly-adult Rapunzel, during the song "Mother Knows Best".

Here you can see clearly that they are dark brown high-heeled ankle boots, just like the ones peeping out in the very top picture.

Pascal tripping up Mother Gothel gives us a really good look at the laces on the boots

The scene at the end where Pascal trips up Mother Gothel and sends her to her death gives us a really good look at the laces on the boots, the overal shape of the boot and the square heel.

A side view of her boot during Mother Knows Best and a vire of the tow and foot shape as she steps over a wounded Flynn Ryder

You will need to find a type of shoe that has as many of the following qualities as possible. There is no exact shoe available, but remember that most of the boot can remain hidden under the dress if you can't find something close enough. If you aren't comfortable with high heels, then choose something lower and square-heeled.

However, square heels and lace ups are quite hard to find, and many of the best matches are suede.
:

  • Dark brown (if possible, leather, if really possible, intricately embroidered as in the first picture)
  • Ankle boots (reaching about as far above the ankle as below to the ground)
  • High-heels (Square, not stilletto, although you may not be able to be very picky)
  • Lace-up (from just below the ankle upwards)
  • Flattish pointed toes

Mother Gothel's Shoes: Concept Art

Mother Gothel Concept Art - here she's clearly wearing high-heeled boots that end just above the ankleOne of the earlier promotional images (just below this bit) had her wearing flat brown moccasins, and another early image (on right) shoes her wearing the high-heeled ankle boots - it's possible she has several pairs of shoes, of course!

As all her gear is medieval, you might find something useful in the way of patterns in a book like Shoes and Pattens (Medieval Finds from Excavations in London). If you want to go with the slipper-style leather shoes, then these Beachcombers! Shoes would work.
Here Mother Gothel is wearing flat brown slippers

Mother Gothel's Hair

Bushy black hair that defies reality - her hair presents a cosplaying challenge!

Mother Gothel's face and hair from the front

Her hair is the blue-black side of black, and very curly. It's cut off neatly about mid-back and the fringe is three or four (it varies) short strands hanging down over her forehead to her eyebrows.

Her eyebrows are thing, in stereotypically 'pretty and fashionable' plucked style.

"You want me to the bad guy? Fine, now I'm the bad guy."

Possible Mother Gothel Wigs

For those without the curly black hairdo!

Unfortunately, there's no exact wig that I can find - most are too frizzy, not black, or don't fall to midway between her shoulderblades. However you might have some luck trimming one to shape and length. But remember - for wig quality, you basically get what you pay for!

If you just need a wig for a quick Halloween costume, and don't want to pay very much, then a close match from Amazon is your best bet. With the exception of the Madame Macabre Black Adult Wig, the wigs below are all under $20.

Don't forget the Wig Cap! They're very cheap and will keep your real hair out of the way, the wig on, and prevent it scratching. You can also make one out of panyhose by putting it on your head and cutting off the excess.

Cheap black and curly wigs on Amazon will do for a quick costume

You're probably have the best luck finding a good Mother Gothel wig on eBay

There are some very good wig sellers on eBay and if you're willing to spend a bit more for a proper cosplay wig, you should probably head there. You're still going to have to trim and modify, unless you get really lucky, but there are a few more choices available, and the sellers are a bit more professional and often willing to take custom orders.

If you've seen Burlesque, then the wig Cher wears there is actually very close to Mother Gothel's hair! If you search for 'Cher' or 'Bellatrix LeStrange' you'll get similar wig-styles.

Most of these auctions are for a particular style of wig, and you are able to choose your own colour.

Mother Gothel Is Pulled Up Into The Tower By Rapunzel

A Look At Mother Gothel From Various Angles

Mother Gothel arrives to visit Rapunzel, who lets down her hair

In this sequence of pictures, you can get a look at the lining of her dress and cloak (dark gold) , as well as how both drape (lots of material) and how far down they come (the ground and her ankles, respectively). You can even get a peek at her shoes (usually covered by the hem of her dress).

Setting her foot in the loop of hair she made, Mother Gothel is pulled up the tower by Rapunzel

The Attitude

Carry it off in style!

Mother Gothel pinched Rapunzel's cheek

Mother Gothel: "Oh! Rapunzel, how you manage to do that every single day, it looks absolutely exhausting, darling."
Rapunzel: "Oh, it's nothing."
Mother Gothel: "Then I don't know why it takes so long."

This is the best part of playing Mother Gothel - you get to be flamboyant, selfish, passive-aggressive, vain, and smothering!

Remember, take every chance to admire your own youthfulness and beauty. Even if it requires putting down someone else. That everything is about you and that you are both clever, amoral, and cunning. And SO DAMN SEXY.

Also, Mother Gothel is smart - of course, she's got centuries of experience to draw on!

I did read that her nails were black, and I checked that - it's just the light tends to be quite bad when you can see her nails, making them look darker. The few times she's in brighter light, you can see they're actually dark red.

x says:

VERY detailed; thank you. My only suggestio is that you include that her nails match her dress. somehwere on the internet someone had a quiz question and the answer was black!!? most popular answer (of course) was red, but even that isnt' right on,

Everything About Mother Gothel

Dear Cosplayers...

A note about the Mother Gothel cosplay information on this page

I am NOT a cosplayer, and the last time I sewed was an attempt to make my brother a stuffed unicorn out of old curtains when I was ten. I found it half-finished, thirteen years later.

My costume analysis of Mother Gothel mainly comes from when I decided to draw her (in order to have some of my own art on this lens - I have a Thing about that :D ) - and therefore had to actually look at all the details (and decide if I could be bothered drawing the dagger, and how to best mimic the brocade without bothering to draw the actual pattern and if it should be shiny, and what colour her eyes really are, and so on).

This means that this costume description comes from the perspective of an artist, not a costumer. I've attempted to provide ideas and resources to help people get started - and more than enough to throw together a home made Halloween costume, but I do not delude myself into thinking this page is anywhere NEAR detailed enough for a serious cosplayer (... an example which IS, is my friend Bria's Rapunzel analysis - yeah, it's her fault I ever heard of Tangled, but I got her onto this site, so it's probably self-inflicted. I do not like Rapunzel, which may be partly why I am so fond of Mother Gothel.)

I know a little about dress patterns, wigs, and fabrics, but only what internet research will give you (I research stuff to death when I'm on a roll, but this kind of thing needs actual practical experience). Over time, as people actually create cosplays of Gothel, I'll have more information to draw on, but if you know something about this, then please:
  • Tell me if something is wrong/misleading
  • Feel free to suggest alternatives/ tips/ tutorials/ stuff you've done
  • Let me know about YOUR cosplays! (I always, always, link them back to the original, so give me the link you want it to go to).
