Mothering Magazine: Support for Natural Parenting
How excited I was when I became pregnant with my first child. I began to read voraciously anything I could get my hands on about mothering and how to care for babies. I found magazines about parenting, child rearing and bottle feeding. None of these magazines seemed to speak to my heart about how I felt about mothering and caring for my child. None, that is, until I discovered Mothering Magazine at an out of the way shop in NYC.
I looked at the cover with a picture of a mother holding her child. I opened the cover and discovered an editorial by Peggy O'Mara which spoke of keeping your baby close, nursing, and allowing your baby to teach you how to care for her.
Mothering Magazine was exactly what I was looking for. Mothering Magazine is for all those mothers who are in love with their babies, infatuated with motherhood and believe that there is nothing like holding a baby and watching her grow.
My baby is now 21 years old. You might think that Mothering Magazine would no longer fit the needs of my family, that my children were too old, that the wisdom and philosophy of Mothering Magazine would no longer apply to my family. But the opposite is true. With articles for mothers of teens, empty nesters and grandmothers, Mothering Magazine continues to be my favorite magazine. If you haven't tried it yet, I urge you to buy a copy. Once you have encountered this incredibly nurturing magazine I am sure that you will subscribe.

Mothering Magazine has well researched articles on the pros and cons of nursing vs. bottle feeding. If you need to convince your mother-in law that your choices are based on scientific fact, you will find the supporting material here.
My favorite articles when my children were babies talked about such issues as immunizations, nursing, sleeping with your baby, teething and diaper choices. Mothering Magazine helped support my choice to use cloth diapers and taught me about slings. I learned that you have a choice not to immunize and what the consequences of that choice could be.
Mothering Magazine supports my natural parenting instincts and is the best magazine to give a new mom or a mom to be. Here are a couple of the most requested articles from past issues of Mothering Magazine,

When my second child was born, he was a boy. I had never thought about the issue of circumcision before. We never thought of it during my pregnancy so we were totally unprepared when the pediatrician asked on the day after he was born whether or not we wanted him to be circumcised.
A few years later I read the wonderful articles in a Mothering Magazine about circumcision. One of the best aspects of Mothering Magazine is that it explains all sides of the issue. I read about the religious reasons that have been given as well as the health concerns. I choose the decision that felt right in my heart but I wish that I had had this issue of Mothering Magazine to read before my son was born.
Breastfeeding in Public
Nursing in Public

I remember when my first child was born. I was fairly comfortable with the decision to breastfeed and knew it was the right decision for me and my baby but one day I went to visit my grandmother. I could not imagine nursing in front of her. I felt too exposed. What was I to do?
I decided to move to the living room where I could be alone and not embarrass her. To my surprise, my grandmother came over, looked down at us with a smile and said, You remind me of when I nursed my babies. It doesn't seem so long ago. My how time flies!
My grandmother raised her children when bottle feeding was rare and breastfeeding was considered natural and normal. I never felt embarrassed again.
Breastfeed in public?

Yes
kwhiting644 says:
Of course. Babies need to eat.
tandemonimom says:
One more thing - to those who say breast in private, bottle in public: my babies never took a bottle, ever. They wouldn't take pacifiers either. Smart babies - why take a poor substitute when the real thing is available? So I fed them naturally wherever we were. And PLEASE stop with the "urinating is natural too" argument. My breastmilk is not a waste product.
tandemonimom says:
Absolutely! Baby is hungry, baby needs good food! I breastfed four babies wherever, whenever, and honestly if mom doesn't make a big deal about it, no one even notices!
Li-Li-ThePinkBookworm says:
I agree that woman should have the right to breastfeed in public, but I do believe that when you do, please ladies, cover up. People just have problems with seeing woman whip their breasts out, but if you do it discreetly under a blanket or cloth, then no one can really have a problem, and I believe more people would support it.
Pastiche says:
When I couldn't find another place, I breastfed my baby in public (35 years ado) by using a light receiving blanket as a drape over my shoulder and her little body. Nobody had a problem with it - in fact, most had no idea I had my infant underneath the "shawl" draped over my shoulder.
No
mysticmama says:
Sorry ladies, I know it's all natural and I'm by no means a prude...but some things should remain private and modest...It's natural to urinate also, but I don't want to see guys whipping it out in public to pee either... they make breast pumps for a reason...pump in private, and use the bottle in public.

Help me make breastfeeding normal again
It sucks doesn't it! Or not, as the case may be. There's no question that breastfeeding has a shoddy image; it just ain't the done thing in Western society (writing this I as am in the UK). Why? perhaps because the formula guys have done such a great job of exploiting the natural paranoia, insecurit...1 point
