They certainly look different that the familiar caricature; they go to the gym and wear designer jeans, business and pant suits, shorts , high-heeled boots and sandals, and other fun fashions. They have experienced many music trends. They have "bopped" to "swing", "swooned" over Elvis, slow danced to Motown, wore flowers to Woodstock and Haight-Asbury, cried over the Beatles, danced under the "glitter balls" with Disco, and other more recent music crazes.

Whether Grandma is more "traditional" or "new age", they all share a common attribute, they love you. Anthropologists have completed studies and they conclude that these ladies are a very important aspect of family life. If my dear Mother was still with me today, I would write this letter for her Mother's Day card. This is a true story. "I remember the time when I had just graduated from high school and was working at a retail store. I was one of the last girls to close the store at 9:00 p.m. I didn't see a man pursue me from the parking lot. I noticed a car with bright lights following me very closely. I drove home as fast as I could and stopped the car right in the middle of the street in front of our house. I honked the horn repeatedly but no one came out but you.

There you were standing on the porch wrapped in a bath towel. Without hesitation you ran up to my car and yelled for me to go into the house. You were only concerned with my safety. Through the blinds I could see you talking to the man in his car. Within minutes he drove away. You quietly put me in bed and sat with me for a little while."

IIt should be no surprise that it was women who wanted to celebrate and honor other hardworking, caring women. We credit Anna Reeves Jarvis who, in 1958, was the first woman to hold an sanctioned celebration of mothers. Anna lived in West Virginia during the Civil War era. She instituted "Mothers Work Day" to actually raise awareness for sanitation problems for both the North and the South. She also worked very hard to provide nursing care to the wounded.

During the subsequent years, other women took up the banner and extended the "mother's cause" to include "Mothers Day for Peace". In 1905 Anna Reeves Jarvis died and her daughter, Anna Jarvis, carried on working tirelessly dedicating herself full time to keep her mother's project alive. She initiated a letter writing campaign, petitioning politicians, clergymen and civil leaders to declare a national day for mothers.

It was actually President Wilson who signed the "joint resolution" to establish a national holiday for Mothers to celebrate their critical role in their families. As they say, the rest is history.
