- Mother Goose's nursery rhyme collection was first published in London in the 18th century.
- Mother's Day traditionally celebrated in Australia, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, Italy, Turkey, and the United States on the Second Sunday in May. Other places around the world also celebrate mothers on different days.
- Mother Teresa of Calcutta is certainly among the most famous "mothers" of all time, known for her dedication to relieving the suffering of India's desperately poor and dying people. She was born in Albania in 1910, founded the Missionaries of Charity in 1950, and won Nobel Peace Prize in 1979. She has not yet been canonized but was beatified in 2003.
- It takes a woman 280 days or 40 weeks to become a mother. That is the length of the average pregnancy. Of course, we all know this answer may vary! And time when you're pregnant is relative to the pregnancy. Mine lasted something more like 40 years but I was horribly sick throughout.
- Shirley Jones transitioned to the small screen to play the role of a single-mother in a popular sitcom only to be "mother" to her real-life stepson when she was cast as the recently widowed mother in ABC's musical sitcom The Partridge Family and played the mother of her real-life stepson David Cassidy as well as Susan Dey and Danny Bonaduce.

- Mother-daughter actresses, Janet Leigh and Jamie Lee Curtis, both had starring roles in a horror film. Janet Leigh earned a Golden Globe Award for her performance as Marion Crane, the young woman who gets murdered while taking a shower and Jamie Lee Curtis starred in the box-office hit, Halloween, that inspired a genre of films to follow.
- The first celebrations in honor of mothers were held in Greece and Rome. The earliest tributes to mothers date back to the annual spring festival the Greeks dedicated to Rhea, the mother of many deities, and to the offerings ancient Romans made to their Great Mother of Gods, Cybele.
- The first "Mothering Sunday" was held in the 17th Century. Christians celebrated a festival on the fourth Sunday in Lent in honor of Mary, mother of Christ. In England this holiday was expanded to include all mothers and was called Mothering Sunday in the 17th century.
- When Anna Jarvis first suggested a Mother's Day nearly 150 years ago she was interested in health. Anna Jarvis, an Appalachian homemaker, organized a day to raise awareness of poor health conditions in her community, a cause she believed would be best advocated by mothers. She called it "Mother's Work Day." A worthy cause, but this mother sure is glad this is one day mother's DON'T have to work!
- When Julia Ward Howe suggested the idea of Mother's Day in the United States in 1872 she envisioned the day being dedicated to Peace. Howe also wrote the words to the Battle Hymn of the Republic.

- In 1905, when Anna Jarvis died, her daughter (with the same name) began a campaign to memorialize the life work of her mother. Legend has it that young Anna remembered a Sunday school lesson that her mother gave in which she said, "I hope and pray that someone, sometime, will found a memorial mother's day. There are many days for men, but none for mothers." Her mother attempted to start a day dedicated to mothers before her.
- In May 10, 1908, the first Mother's Day was held in West Virginia. Mother's Day becomes institutionalized in Grafton, West Virginia, at the instigation of Anna Jarvis, in memory of her own mother.
- One year after the first Mother's Day was observed in the U.S. in 1908, every state celebrated the event on the second Sunday in May. Five years later, the U.S. House of Representatives adopted a resolution calling for officials of the federal government to wear white carnations on Mother's Day.
- President Woodrow Wilson officially proclaimed Mother's Day a national holiday.
- When she died at 84, Anna Jarvis felt bitter about her accomplishment of creating a national holiday for mothers. Enraged by the commercialization of the holiday, she filed a lawsuit to stop a 1923 Mother's Day festival. Jarvis told a reporter shortly before her death that she was sorry she had ever started Mother's Day.

- Mother Jones was Mary Harris Jones and Irish-born American labor leader and union organizer. She helped found the Industrial Workers of the World in 1905.
- Danu was a mother goddess according to Celtic mythology. The descendants of Dana and her consort Bilé (Beli) were known as the Tuatha Dé Danaan (Celtic for "Children of Danaan"), a race of gods that in later legend became one of the early peoples of Ireland.
- Ingrid Bergman's daughter is Isabella Rossellini. Her father was Roberto Rossellini, famed Italian film director. She was once married to director Martin Scorcese.
- Carrie Fisher's mother is Debbie Reynolds.
- Mother Cabrini is now known as Saint Frances Xavier Cabrini. The Italian-born American religious leader founded the Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart in 1880 and was the first American to be canonized in 1946.

- Isis, according to Egyptian mythology, is Goddess of fertility and motherhood; Daughter of Earth and Sky; and Mother to the Day. While she is not Sister to the Night she is the sister-wife of Osiris, judge of the dead.
- Real-life mother Maureen O'Sullivan and daughter Mia Farrow played mother and daughter in Hannah and Her Sisters. Released in 1986, this Academy Award-winning film was directed by Woody Allen, who also appears in the film as Mickey, the neurotic former husband of Hannah (played by Mia Farrow). Quite the family affair, eh?
- On June 15, 1978, Lisa Najeeb Halaby became the first American-born queen of Jordan, taking the name Noor al-Hussein or "Light of Hussein." Born in Washington, D.C., she married King Hussein of Jordan. In addition to an active life working for her adopted country as well as its women and children, she has four children: Prince Hamzah, born in 1980; Prince Hashim, born in 1981; Princess Iman, born in 1983; and Princess Raiyah, born in 1986.
- The usual length of labor for a first-time mother is about 13 to 14 hours, and about 8 or 9 hours in a woman who has given birth previously.
