Making the Most out of Mother's Day
Show your mom you care on May 13th
It's the most popular day of the year for brunch reservations, the second busiest day of the year for florists and it can sneak up on you faster than tax time. Mother's Day is May 13th - are you ready? Despite our more cynical assumptions that the day was invented by greeting card companies, Mother's Day was actually started by a West Virginian woman as a way to commemorate her mother's hard work and devotion. The least we can do on Mother's Day is get Mom a card and a nice gift to say thank you! When you were young, macaroni art and finger paint pictures were the gifts Mom really appreciated, but now that you're grown, it's time to dig a bit deeper, both creatively and into your wallet.
How do you say thank you?
What's the best way to thank the woman who carried you for nine months, sat up with you while you had the croup, drove you to all of your soccer practices, helped you pick the perfect outfit for prom and lovingly encouraged you through every step of your life? Good question! If you have difficulty coming up with creative Mother's Day gift ideas, you're not alone. Even though you've known this woman all your life, for some reason it can still be tricky to come up with a gift idea that shows just how thankful you are - unless you've got the budget to buy her a ranch with live-in servants.
What Mom really wants
The things most moms really and truly want don't cost anything. Roll your eyes all you like, but it's true. As Mom's kids get older and become preoccupied with their own lives or move out entirely, Mom starts to feel a little neglected. Whatever you choose to get Mom for Mother's Day, don't forget to hang out with her while she uses it. Treat both of you to a pedicure, take her to a new movie or the theater, help in the garden while she installs her new solar lights. Go for a hike at a national park and use her new binoculars to spot birds or teach her how to use the latest techno gadget. Having your undivided attention will mean as much to her as any gift you can buy her.
Express yourself
Another important aspect of Mother's Day is actually telling Mom how much you appreciate her. A nice, expensive card is great, but make it more meaningful with a few heartfelt words. You don't have to get sappy on her, just write honestly about how important she is to you. Stuck for inspiration? Think about the last time Mom made you feel really good about yourself and write it out, then tell her how much you appreciate her words of encouragement and praise.
A thank you jar is another creative Mother's Day gift that will have those tears of joy flowing. Buy a nice vase and a stack of 50 brightly colored note cards. On each card, write a different example of something Mom has done that you appreciate. Go beyond, "Thanks for sending me home cooked meals while I was at school," and try something a bit more profound like, "Thanks for the home cooked meals you sent while I was at school. It was nice to know that even though I'd moved away, you were still watching out for me." There's only one day out of the year that you've got to really show her how special she is, so push any awkwardness aside and tell her how you feel.

She's not my Mom!
Why Do I Owe My Wife a Mother%u2019s Day Gift?
Recently at work I mentioned that my wife is dropping hints for a Mother's Day gift. No one was shocked. My female co-workers thought it was acceptable for my wife to be leaving post-its on the fridge that count down the days to Mother's Day.
In fact, I think they actually admire the boldness of the repeated reminders and the foresight of the advance warning of the holiday to come. And I'll admit that after 3 years of forgotten birthdays and haphazard Valentine's kitsch, she knows I need reminders. But this year is different. This year, we have a kid.
Don't get me wrong; I understand why she uses reminders for the anniversary, her birthday and even Christmas, but why for Mother's Day? She's not my mother. Why do I owe her a Mother's Day gift? And what kind of gift do you get someone for Mother's Day when she's not your mom, anyway?
I've spent my whole life disappointing my own mom on Mother's Day - I didn't think I'd ever be subjected to the same pain by my soul mate. You'd think she would have mentioned this obligation before we decided to have a kid.
The women at work were shocked when I told them I wasn't going to take the hints. Even the women who don't have kids acted disappointed in me. Actually, those women pleaded the case the hardest, saying; "You wouldn't be a parent if it wasn't for her!" and; "She went through so much pain to bear your child!"
But it was the men at the office who had the more compelling reasons to treat my wife to a great Mother's Day present. Apparently, several of them have made the same argument some time in the past, and all of them eventually gave it up and started to buy their wives gifts on Mother's Day. The top 5 reasons they gave that convinced me to buy my own wife a gift this Mother's Day?
5. She makes your lunch and can poison it at any time
4. You have to fall asleep sometime
3. She'll be around a lot longer than your mom will be
2. You want to get lucky sometime before August

Honoring all Moms - Including Yourself - on Mother's Day
Getting New Mama Kudos amidst Mother's Day Traditions
So on Mother's Day this year, it would be nice to sleep in, have breakfast in bed, sleep some more, have lunch in bed, maybe do a little reading, and then take a nap.
But that won't happen. Instead, I'll spend most of the day honoring my own mother and my mother-in-law. My mother lives too far away to spend the day together, so the card and spa gift certificate will be mailed off early, and a quick phone call first thing in the morning will complete the obligation. I'll spend the rest of the morning making my weary face look fresh and finding something teahouse-worthy that fits this ever-changing nursing body of mine, so that my husband and I can take his mother out for an early-afternoon lunch at her favorite restaurant. That lunch will likely be drawn out into an evening back at our house so that grandma will have a good chance to bond with her grandbaby.
You might think my tongue is in my cheek while I write this, but I assure you it's not. The reason there is genuinely no sarcasm in my voice is because I believe all mothers deserve to be honored, and because I will know I'll find a way to get my quiet time this *Mother's Day[Creating Quiet Time] and to satisfy my mother-in-law at the same time.
You see, I genuinely believe my mother-in-law is due all the respect in the world for her incredible capacity for raising my husband (which couldn't have been easy), putting up with her own husband, being an exemplary role model and always being willing to listen to my consternation over motherhood. But I think that I deserve respect too. So I've decided that I'll take moments throughout Mother's Day to honor myself.
I'll revel in the fact that I can tidy up the house and get dolled up without interruption while my husband is caring for the baby. I'll take the time to straighten the pictures on the wall and to give myself a facial masque just because I know I won't have to go running for the baby as soon as he squawks. I'll feed the baby (as always) on schedule, but I'll completely e
A Guy's Guide to Mother's Day
How the manliest of men can show his mommy some love
Hell hath no fury like a forgotten Mom
Step number one: definitely the biggest, remember when Mother's Day is. In the U.S. and Canada, it's held on the second Sunday in May. Other countries celebrate it around the same time. In 2007, Mother's Day is on MAY 13. Write it down and stick up Post-It notes around your house. Do not forget - MAY 13. Try some word association. Your mother MAY react like Jason's mom in Friday the 13th if you forget Mother's Day. Simple enough.
Show some love
Step number two: remember what Mother's Day is all about. Showing your mom some genuine affection on Mother's Day isn't enough to qualify you as a momma's boy, but it will mean a lot to her. If she's still changing your sheets though, you've got concerns. A slightly sappy card with a heartfelt note from you will have her eyes welling up and some fantastic home cooking coming you way.
Flowers and chocolates are pretty standard gifts, so try to think outside the box. What are her hobbies? Hint - vacuuming isn't one of them. Neither is cleaning the bathroom. Does she take pilates (fancy stretching)? Is she in a book club (ladies talking about stuff they've read)? Take a minute to figure out what she's into (not doing your laundry), then choose a gift that relates.
Treat her right
Slightly sappy card opened: check. Thoughtful gift fawned over: check. OK, Mother's Day is done, right? Not so fast, hot rod. It's called Mother's Day for a reason. Not Mother's Morning. Not Mother's 20 Minutes. Book a lunch date or take her out for dinner. Tour an art gallery with her and absorb a little culture. It's one day out of the year and she's going to really appreciate just hanging out with her favorite son.
This Mother's Day, don't forget the special lady in your life. A little thought and some genuine effort will have Mom singing your praises to all her friends who have hot, single daughters. It's a win-win situation.

Garden Party: Mother's Day Flowers To Grow With Your Kids!
Using gardening to connect with your kids on Mother's Day
Plant planning
The Saturday before Mother's Day, spend some time planning your garden party. Take your kids outside and teach them about the kinds of soil you have in your garden. Get them to draw the garden on a sheet of paper and mark off sunny and shady areas. Discuss which parts of the garden can use more color and let the kids feel a part of the decision-making process.
Once you've worked out a plan of attack, take the kids to a local nursery and show them how to read the descriptions on seed packets and flower flats. Using your sun map, help the kids choose plants that will grow well in the different areas of the garden. It's OK to give guidance by pointing out which colors of Mother's Day flowers you want and letting the kids choose a specific plant that matches the hue. Or go the other way and tell them which kind of plant you want and let them pick the color. Letting your kids help with the decision making process will encourage them to feel proud of the garden and their work.
Play dress up
On Mother's Day, before you get outside and get dirty, make sure the kids are properly attired. Don't forget sun hats, sunscreen, gardening gloves and clothes they can get dirty. Small gifts like their own trowels or gloves will get the kids enthused about the work ahead.
Lesson time
Start by weeding the area you want to plant. Make sure you show the kids very clearly which green things are weeds and which are plants you want to keep. Explain to them that the weeds need to be pulled out to give your Mother's Day flowers room to grow. There are lots of things you can teach your kids while gardening. Explain to them how worms, lady bugs, bees and butterflies help the garden grow. Teach them about the life cycle of plants and the difference between perennials and annuals.
