The importance of a good boot

For the motorcycle rider, there are many things to take into consideration when choosing riding boots. The footwear of the motorcycle rider is critical to smooth, injury free operation of the bike.

The first item that needs to be considered when choosing a pair of riding boots is the composition of the sole. The rider's feet act as a stabilizing platform at traffic lights, intersections and other stopping situation; therefore, it is critical that footing be solid. To give the best footing stability, the sole of the rider's boots should be made of an oil resistant, non-slip material. The rider is likely to encounter motor oil, anti-freeze and air conditioner condensation on the road surface. These substances can wreak havoc with the motorcycle rider's stationary stability.

The next item of importance is a reinforced top leather over the toes. Over time, the constant strain of shifting can create bruising and other painful conditions with the toes and top of the foot. A well built riding boot will often have a shifter pad on the top of the boot for added comfort and protection. Most motorcycle boots come with a reinforced toe as added protection for the rider's feet.

The protection of the rider's ankle makes the riding boot a perfect choice of riding footwear. The motorcycle rider's ankle is susceptible to burns from the engine, and exhaust pipes, not to mention severe injury if the motorcycle is laid down. The design of a riding boot gives protection by covering skin and maintains stability of the ankle under duress.

A good riding boot will also eliminate free hanging shoe laces. A free hanging shoe lace has the potential of getting caught on the shifter or brake pedal lever. On a chain driven bike, a loose shoe lace could have even more dire effects to rider and machine. Riding boots generally come without laces or a system that covers and holds the laces in place.

In most cases the helmet is considered the primary piece of safety equipment, but the sure footing of the right footwear in many ways can be equally as important.
