TO HELMET or NOT TO HELMET

THAT, MY FRIENDS, IS THE QUESTION.........

Whether 'tis nobler in the mind to suffer
some discomfort and perhaps to sweat a bit,
Or to take arms against the benefits of the helmet,
And by opposing them perhaps to suffer a more horrible fate.

Just The Facts, Ma'am..

1 - Head injury is the leading cause of death in motorcycle crashes. (U.S. Department of Transportation/National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, State Legislative Fact Sheet)
2 - Helmets are estimated to be 37 percent effective in preventing fatal injuries to motorcyclists. (NHTSA Traffic Safety Facts, Motorcycles, 2006)
3 - Wearing a properly fitted helmet can actually improve the rider's ability to hear by streamlining the head and ear which can reduce wind noise allowing the rider to hear other sounds. (Safe Cycling-Motorcycle Safety Foundation Publication.)
4 - Helmets prevent eye injuries and distraction from dust, dirt and debris thrown up by other vehicles on the road. (Safe Cycling-Motorcycle Safety Foundation Publication.)
5 - Per vehicle mile, motorcyclists are about 37 times as likely as passenger car occupants to die in a traffic crash and about 8 times as likely to be injured. (NHTSA Traffic Safety Facts, 2006)
6 - Hospital stays are longer for unhelmeted riders and the cost to taxpayers is significantly higher since many motorcyclists are uninsured. (Michigan Traffic Safety Information Council.)

What makes a good motorcycle helmet ??

The "full face" helmet

type=text

A proper motorcycle helmet has two principal protective components: a thin, hard, outer shell typically made from polycarbonate plastic, fiberglass, or Kevlar and a soft, thick, inner liner usually made of expanded polystyrene or polypropylene "EPS" foam.

The purpose of the hard outer shell is:
1.to prevent penetration of the helmet by a pointed object that might otherwise puncture the skull, and
2.to provide structure to the inner liner so it does not disintegrate upon abrasive contact with pavement. This is important because the foams used have very little resistance to penetration and abrasion.

The purpose of the foam liner is to crush during an impact, thereby increasing the distance and period of time over which the head stops and reducing its deceleration.

"Full Face" helmets offer extra protection with the chin guard.

Make Sure It Fits Properly !!

type=text

When you shop for your motorcycle helmet, be sure you are able to speak with someone knowledgeable and trained in proper helmet fitment. A helmet that doesn't fit you properly isn't going to protect you as it should if and when you need it.
The helmet should fit snuggly without having to force it down on your head.
With the chin strap cinched under your chin, you should NOT be able to grab the back of the helmet and roll it off your head.
It should not obstruct your vision in any way.
You should not be able to stick your finger between your forehead and the inside of the helmet.
An experienced salesperson is your best friend when buying a helmet. They are concerned with your safety more than the "look".

I Like This Helmet..

type=textI don't always wear a "full face" helmet. Usually in the winter when I want more protection from the wind.
Sometimes the one-piece "full face" models are kinda rough when pulling them over your head.
When I do use my "full face", it's the like one pictured here.
This is a great helmet because the chin part flips up for easy on/off and then snaps into locked position while riding.
MUCH easier to use..

Another Style Of Helmet Is The Full or Open Face Helmet

type=text

This is the style most pictured when someone talks about motorcycle helmets.
They usually have snaps along the front to attach visors (like the picture), or face shields.

The Full helmet

type=textThe full helmet should be made of the same components found in the "full face" helmets.
You still have head, neck and ear protection with the full helmet.

Again, don't buy your helmet because you like the color or the graphics...
Buy from someone who can fit you with the helmet that will protect you !!

Safety Standards

type=textAlways be sure that the helmet you buy has been approved. The DOT sticker shows that the helmet meets the required safety standards.
If your state also requires motorcycle inspections, you probably won't pass without the proper helmet.

And then there's the "No Helmet" helmet...

type=text

Some riders prefer the very small helmet that is referred to as a "skid lid'. Many do this because they live where a motorcycle helmet is mandatory and they are just doing whatever is necessary to comply with the laws.
But more often than not, these helmets offer NO protection and some don't even have foam or padding inside.

Most likely you won't find any DOT certification on these helmets and they are not really a legal helmet.

A cheap "throw-away" helmet..

type=textThese "skid lid" type helmets are very popular items at many of the large bike rallies. People who come from a state without helmet laws to a rally in a state where you must wear a helmet find that for a few bucks, they can wear the lid and then not care if it gets lost or they left behind.
A lot of the ones you see at the rallies are also air brushed with different graphics to make them more appealing.

The Possibilities Are As Wild As Your Imagination....

Whichever style of helmet you choose, you can customize it to make it unique...

Hello and welcome to The Airbrush Shop Web site.

I WEAR A HELMET !!!!!!

type=textTo be perfectly honest, I live in a state where helmets are mandatory so the choice was made for me.
I also used to be the rebel who said that if I MUST wear one, my little "skid lid" will suffice. And I figured if I ever move to a state where I can decide, I might choose the "no helmet" option.

Then I worked in a motorcycle store for a while and began to discuss the helmet issue with a lot of customers.

Let me tell you....you can TALK all you want and have some pretty good arguments for the pros and cons of helmets but as they say - A picture is worth a thousand words. When people started coming in showing me their helmets after their motorcycle accident, you begin to see things that you just can't argue with...

Had this rider not been wearing a "full face" helmet, can you think of what his chin and face would look like???
Just the fact that these riders walked into the store to show their helmet makes you think twice about riding without or with just a piece of plastic on your head.

What about you........

MANY STATES DON'T GIVE YOU THE OPTION !!

It depends on where you live...

type=text

Laws requiring all motorcyclists to wear a helmet are in place in 20 states and the District of Columbia.

Laws requiring only some motorcyclists to wear a helmet are in place in 27 states.

There is no motorcycle helmet use law in 3 states (Illinois, Iowa, and New Hampshire)

Whose choice is it ????

type=textI'm sure most people ( even those who don't ride or attend motorcycle functions ) have seen shirts or bumper stickers or hats or whatever that say this..........

Some Exerpts From An Article In USA Today from 2010

NTSB pushes for stricter motorcycle helmet laws

The National Transportation Safety Board, the independent federal agency charged with determining the probable cause of transportation accidents and promoting safety, is urging states to enact mandatory helmet laws for all motorcycle riders.
More than 12 motorcyclists die in crashes in the USA each day, and the leading cause of death in those fatalities is head injuries, NTSB Vice Chairman Christopher Hart said Tuesday in urging states without laws covering all riders to adopt them.

Motorcycles comprise just 3% of vehicles on the nation's road but are involved in 13% of fatalities, Hart said.

He said helmets that meet federal Department of Transportation regulations are 37% effective in preventing motorcycle fatalities. He said the "novelty helmets" preferred by some riders have less padding against impact and penetration, and are more easily lost in crashes.

For years, motorcycle deaths have climbed steadily even as nearly every other category of traffic fatality has declined. However, last year for the first time in 11 years, motorcycle fatalities dropped - a decline that some experts attribute to the economy.

Motorcycle enthusiasts aren't welcoming NTSB's effort.

"It's a little alarming and a little disturbing that they would pursue motorcycle helmet laws after an 11-year, record-breaking motorcycle death drop," said Jeff Hennie, vice president of the Washington, D.C.-based Motorcycle Riders Foundation, which has over 250,000 members.

"We're making so much progress in the areas of rider education and motorist awareness, to call on the states to adopt motorcycle helmet laws, it seems like a jump in the wrong direction," Hennie said.

The trend in recent years has been for states to repeal universal helmet laws, said Jonathan Adkins spokesman for the Governors Highway Safety Association.

"The NTSB is extremely well thought-of and very credible," Adkins said. "The fact that they're weighing in on this issue is very helpful, and frankly, very brave. They will take some heat for it. There's really been no positive movement. But there's no argument that motorcycle helmet laws will reduce fatalities."

Groups of concerned riders.

There are a few groups out there that fight for riders rights. One of the more popular is ABATE. They've been around a long time and have helped promote the awareness of motorcycles on the roads and are involved in the great helmet debate.
Most of these groups are not disputing the effectiveness of helmets or the safety facts. They are fighting for the right to let the motorcycle rider make his or her own decision.

Is this a good thing or a bad thing ??

Will people, if allowed to do so on their own, make the right choice ??

Who will determine which is the right choice ??

Could where you live make a difference on whether a helmet is needed ??

Car vs Motorcycle

type=textMy personal observation after years of motorcycling is that people in cars either don't see us or just don't care!

If my opinion of the helmet issue counts then here it is...
I think it should be up to the rider to decide whether they want the added protection of a helmet.
BUT -- and this is a biggie -- I also think that where you live should be a determining factor in regard to helmet laws.
I know this may sound like a contradiction but think about it.

I might think that I'm a good rider and if I want to take the chance I should have the option.. That's great if I'm riding in an area where there is little or no traffic and very little concern for changing road conditions.

Now, I arrive in the heart of one of the most densely populated cities around. I am one motorcycle in a sea of cars. In todays world, more than half of those drivers are on the phone or texting or shaving or reading or eating or what have you.
They are unaware of any other vehicles on the road. They're in their own little world and are determined to get where they're going.

Don't you think that I should consider all of this and change my mind about the helmet choice ??

When you're on a motorcycle there aren't many SMALL "fender benders". Even a slight bump from a car could land you on the ground.

That helmet just might save you.

Let me know what you think...
