Leather Motorcycle Chaps ~ More Than Practical

Like most anything we look at today, motorcycle leather chaps have an interesting history.

Of course we know that cowboys of the American old west wore them, and John Wayne and Tom Mix showed us how fancy they could be as well, but the history goes back a bit farther than the late 1800's America.

women's brown leather biker chapsThe Spaniards who settled in Mexico pre-1700 found a need to protect their legs while riding their horses in the high thickets and brush. The settlers developed two pieces of flat leather that were tied to the saddle. When riding through the sticky situations, the rider could let the buffalo or cowhide leather shroud their legs. When in the clear, the leather Armas, or Chaperajos, could be folded behind the legs.

Over the years, the Chaperajos became chaps, and migrated into the old west where American cowboys began to adorn them with fringe, conchos and other trinkets. It is here when the leather chaps had transformed into what the cowboys called Shotguns.

Shotguns are wrapped around each leg and attached to each other by a waist belt, thus resembling a double barreled shotgun.

Motorcyclists refer to their bikes as Iron Steeds and often live life with the same gusto and free spirit that the old cow punchers did, so it is no surprise that the bikers would adopt the chaps as an important functional garment for braving the elements.

Oh yeah, then there's the biker chicks who look real good in a pair of ladies leather chaps.

Life Without My Leather Biker Chaps?

Never.

I cannot tell you how much I depend on my chaps.

In the Spring I usually have so much cabin fever built up that the first hint of a 40 degree day, overcast or not, I'm up at dawn and chomping on the bit. My leather biker chaps, along with my men's leather motorcycle jacket, help fight off the bitter early spring air that is accentuated by sixty mph trips up and down the yet to be heated asphalt. Even on those Spring days were the temperatures push the upper 70's in the afternoons, the morning rides usually start out something less than warm.

Riding in the rain is a little more tolerable when I wear my leather chaps. There was a trip I made to south of Lexington Kentucky where the rain kicked in about halfway there, stopped for the entire time I was at an outdoor family reunion only to start as soon as I fired the bike up to go home. If it were not for my chaps and leather jacket, I would have been a miserably soaked mess, because it rained every inch of the 150 mile trip back.

Yes, chaps are an important component of my "kit".

Choosing The Right Material
When it comes to choosing a particular kind of leather for a garment, the options can seem mind boggling. It seems that anything we can wrestle to the ground (or bring to the shore), we'll make leather out of. Lamb, Kangaroo, Stingray, are just a few, but the best for biker gear is cowhide.

Cowhide has a strength and durability that is unparalleled. 'Top' grain leather, leather that has been sanded and lacquered to remove any imperfections, can be 1.3mm thick and provide protection. But, the best protection against the elements and road rash is 'Naked' cowhide. Naked cowhide is treated by just removing the hair and applying dyes. This process allows the final product to be at least 2mm thick.

So, if you are truly seeking a good biker jacket, make sure it's cowhide, and remember that most styles are available in 'Naked' leather.

Insuring The Kit!
What a great idea. An insurance company now covers a rider's helmet and leathers(biker jacket, gloves, leather chaps, boots,etc.). Bikersure, an insurance company based in the United Kingdom is now offering coverage up to $700 on helmets and leathers under the premise that these items are part of the safety kit.

"We recognise that good quality helmet and leathers are an essential part of a motorcyclist's safety kit. We want to make it affordable for bikers to ride safely. Our Helmet and Leather policy makes it possible for them to easily replace damaged kit after an accident."

For the cost of $20 a year, motorcyclists can obtain coverage on the kit. The insurance company also recommends that riders should invest 15% to 20% of the cost of the motorcycle into a proper and high quality kit.

Do Leather Chaps Make Your Heart Bump?

Or Do You Not Really Care?

I think I can speak for everyone, both sexes, when I say that leather chaps go beyond utilitarian when speaking of attributes. I mean, a gal in motorcycle leather chaps chaps is well protected against the elements, but the right chaps and the right denim make for a heck of wolf lure. I've been known to howl at the moon a time or two.

How about you?
