What Is a Motorcycle Squid?

There are many differing ideas as to what makes a Squid be a Squid:

Some say that Squids are young/new riders. This isn't entirely true - all motorcyclists start out being new, but not all motorcyclists start out being Squids. What is true about this definition is that new Squids rarely become old Squids! They either give up their squidish ways or, well - you get the idea, I'm sure.
Some say that a Squid is a motorcyclist that doesn't wear adequate protective gear. This isn't really a definition of Squid, so much as it's a symptom of squidishness.
Some say that Squids ride sport bikes. This is more of a generalization than a definition. Squids can ride cruisers, although they tend to be thought of more as being rude than as being Squids.
Some say that a Squid is anyone that does motorcycle tricks. Definitely not true. There are a lot of reasonable, responsible bikers that practice their tricks off public roads, posing no danger to the public. Evil Knievel was not a Squid.

In my mind:

A Squid is a biker that rides beyond his capabilities.
A Squid is a biker that shows poor judgment while riding on public roads.
A Squid is a biker that poorly represents the Motorcycling Community to non-motorcyclists.

Perhaps, the most effective way to explain Squid, is to not explain it at all. As Justice Potter Stewart said "I shall not today attempt further to define the kinds of material I understand to be embraced within that shorthand description; and perhaps I could never succeed in intelligibly doing so. But I know it when I see it." That being said, view the following video clips and you'll have no trouble knowing a Squid when you so one.

What do Squids have in common with squid? Both have no armor protecting their fleshy bodies. Both are straight-line quick but have to come to a near stop to turn.

Motorcycle Crash

Crashing in itself doesn't make a rider a Squid. If you ride long enough, you're going to crash. That's just the nature of riding.

How Did the Term "Squid" Originate?

Nobody really knows. Some say it means
Stupidly Quick, Underdressed, Imminently Dead
This acronym is relatively new and undoubtedly retrofitted to the term.

Basically, it's a generally derogatory term - especially among mariners. Think about it - would you want to be called a Squid even if you didn't know what it meant?

That made me so proud to be a biker...brought a tear to my eye. I think it was from laughing so hard. The guy taking his ticket to court was unbelievable. I wish I had half his ego, errr I mean, confidence!
