How to choose an instructor

All Motorcycle Instructors for the purposes of Learner Training are accredited by the Driving Standards Agency (DSA).

The system for "Advanced" Instruction does vary, as there is at the moment no compulsory accreditation for Advanced Instructors.

Dealing first with "Learner" Instruction there are three tiers of certification.
  1. Compulsory Basic Training (CBT) Down Trained Instructor. Any instructor who has attended and successfully passed the DSA Instructor Assessment at the DSA Assessment Centre in Cardington can "Down Train" up to 10 other instructors to train under his licence to deliver CBT courses.

"Down Trained" instructors are limited to teaching on bikes up to 125cc and cannot teach under the Direct Access Scheme.

This is the first step for an instructor in the motorcycle training industry.
  2. Cardington Assessed CBT Instructor. Generally, after gaining experience as a "Down Trained" instructor, instructors may then attend the two day DSA CBT Assessment at Cardington and if successful become qualified in their own right.

This assessment covers not just the teaching of a CBT but also the supervision and assessment of other instructors doing so.

They are then able, if they wish, to "Down Train" other instructors.

At this stage they still cannot train under the Direct Access Scheme and are limited to bikes of up to 125cc.
  3. Direct Access Scheme. After gaining practical experience of teaching CBTs instructors are able to attend a further assessment at the DSA assessment centre, Cardington, to gain the qualification to teach under the Direct Access Scheme.

This enables the instructor to train students aged over 21 on bikes of any size to gain their full motorcycle licence.

How to check your instructor

Driving Standards Agency Certified Instructors are currently only allowed to train with two Approved Training Bodies (ATB's).

In other words, the instructor can only train with two training companies (ATB's).

Each certificate will bear the name and address of the relevant ATB and a photograph and the full name of the instructor.

The certificate will also bear a unique serial number and an expiry date.
  1. "Down Trained" instructor.

A "Down Trained" instructor will hold a YELLOW DSA certificate.
  2. Cardington Assessed CBT Instructor.

A Cardington Assessed CBT Instructor will hold a BLUE certificate, the serial number of which will be suffixed with the letter "C". This denotes they have been Cardington Assessed.

    i.e. 01234C.
  3. Direct Access Scheme (DAS).

A DAS Instructor will hold a BLUE certificate, the unique serial number of which is prefixed with the letter "D" and still carries the "C" suffix.

    i.e. D01234C.

This denotes they are Direct Access qualified and Cardington assessed.

The above 3 qualifications are the minimum legal requirements for Motorcycle Training in the UK depending on which level of training you require.

It may well be that your chosen instructor may hold other motorcycling qualifications or benefit from other background or professional experience which may influence your choice.

What's Involved?

What's involved in gaining the qualification you want?

Below are links to information pages detailing each step of your training.
CBT (Certificate of Basic Training)
The CBT certificate validates your Provisional Licence Entitlement to ride motorcycles up to 125cc. You must still display 'L' plates, must not carry passengers and cannot use the Motorway at this stage but it forms the basis of good riding to build upon for the future.

This is your first step towards becoming part of a breed of road user who is able to get the best from travel on today's modern and busy roads.
Direct Access Scheme
After completing the CBT and motorcycle theory test you are now able to proceed with more training and take your practical test.
Advanced Motorcycle Training
We also offer, in conjunction with UK Advanced Motorcycle Training the opportunity to undergo a 4 day accredited advanced motorcycle course. Accredited through the Oxford Open College Network (OxOCN).
