Forgotten classics, the current industry, and a look to the future... I'm looking for the next hip classic, the muscle car America forgot, tomorrow's hit. This is a celebration of design, culture and business.

Jeep Grand Wagoneer

a profile

One of the best SUV's ever. The Grand Wagoneer is timeless. Introduced in 1963, it was the world's first luxury 4x4 (the Range Rover would only come out 7 years later). Wagoneer production ceased in 1991 but the model has had a rich afterlife. Classic woody style, comfort, and practicality have allowed the Wagoneer to live on in America's hearts and driveways. Here are some pictures and links for those wishing to learn more, reminisce, or buy one of the coolest 4x4s on the market.

Wagoneers on the Web

Some restorers, lovers and drivers of Wagoneers
Restorers
These guys make gorgeous restorations of late Grand Wagoneers. The website has awesome details and photos of their work. A great site to drool over some impossibly cool cars and maybe find your next ride...
Wagoneers for Sale!
Nice selection... if you are like me just looking through these listings is a pleasure.
Wagoneer Passion
A good little article about Leon Miller, the man behind wagonmasters.com., with some great tidbits about the Wagoneer's designer.

Kei cars on flicker... I'm still looking for a good site on Kei car culture and photography that is in English. These are a very interesting segment of the Japanese car market. More on Kei cars, and where they fit in the future of motoring at a later date.

Recommended Reading

Recommended monthly reading: Car is simply the best automobile magazine out there. Solid editorials, beautiful photography, great layout, and the right balance of content between performance and bread & butter vehicles. They just get it. They get that the Enzo is ugly, that Bangle is mad (but onto something), that city cars are fascinating, and that there is nothing cooler than a Caterham. Or better than a Subaru.

Some gems from the latest issue:

- Performance car of the year... includes the Gumpert Apollo which appeared like a bat out of hell on the supercar scene. I haven't seen this much excitement since the first Noble. In fact, the car has some surprising similarities to Noble's productions: Daft looks and an amazing drive. Apparently this is like a Noble on crack. It's the 'fastest car on Top Gear" the British (yeah more about all this British car media later) show / mag sensation (see links below). Faster than Enzo, Pagani, Koenigsegg...

Let me know what you think of the car. I can't decide how I feel about the looks, it's obviously ugly. But it sort of works in a 'doodled by an engineer with a hard-on for spoilers' way.

- A trip to the Targa Tasmania, without a doubt one of the coolest races out there. The variety of cars is simply awesome. This is what 'stock car' races should be. Murcielagos, camaros, and all sorts of rally cars driven flat out around the island.

(See you tube vid)

- A profile of the upcoming Toyota iQ, the most exciting small car since the Smart. Cool, clever tech, and a lot of potential. The market for tiny cars should become quite interesting. What I can't wait to see is what Gordon Murray is concocting. In case you've forgotten, he was the mastermind behind the McLaren F1. He is also a small-car nut and has since devoted his energies to creating a revolutionary small car. Given that he has proven he can put his vision on the road, this is a website well worth watching. The car is going to be very important.
