Mount Kilimanjaro not Just for Experienced Climbers
Mount Kilimanjaro is often called the Roof of Africa because it is the tallest point in all the land. Although it is a National Park it is also a very popular destination for mountain climbers. What most people don't realize is that you do not have to be an experienced or trained climber to take on the giant Mount Kilimanjaro.
Located in Africa, very near the equator Mount Kilimanjaro is the home of three inactive volcanoes. It has been over 200 years since they have erupted however you can, even today; still smell sulfur in the air. Named a National Park and opened to the public in 1977, it draws thousands of visitors each year.
There are seven different trails that will take you to the peak and only a couple actually requires that you be an experienced climber. Although every route does require that you take a guide along to ensure your safety. The guides are local Tanzanians and other than farming, being a guide is the big business of the area.
In order to even attempt to reach the top of Mount Kilimanjaro one does need to be reasonably physically fit and in good health. While moving up the mountain one will experience all of the earth's eco-systems. From desert to rain forest to glaciers it is truly a wondrous experience.
Wildlife is in abundance on Mount Kilimanjaro as well. From elephants, giraffes and monkeys to 7 species of birds one can expect to be awed and amazed throughout the climb/trails.
Those that have reached the top say it is a spiritual experience, life changing and life affirming. Regardless of the route you take it will take days not hours to achieve the goal of reaching the top. Some trails take 4 days while others will take 6 or 7 days. You will need to consult with your travel agent and choose the package that is right for you. You will stay in huts and be fed along the way.
There is a box that contains a book at the very top of Mount Kilimanjaro. In this book those that have stood on the Roof of Africa write down what they see, how they feel and what they are experiencing. It is truly a once in a life time experience. This is a book that I hope someday will be published for all of us to see. Until then, we must take to the mountain and reach the top to read its hidden secrets.
