Climbing Mount Kosciuszko

Ranked #4,123 in Travel & Places, #123,943 overall

The Highest Peak In Australia

On December 30th 2010, myself and my wife along with our two children ascended the highest mountain in Australia, Mount Kosciuszko.
At a height of 2,228 metres (7,310 ft) above sea level, it is not terribly high compared to other mountains throughout the world and it is easily accessible year round.

This makes it one of the world's easiest highest peaks in a country to be climbed. In fact, it is even possible to drive a car right to the top, but this is not an available option for the public.

Up until 1976 it was possible though for the public in the summer months to drive through to Rawson Pass, which is within a few metres of the summit. This was stopped due to environmental concerns.

Two Paths To Choose From

There are two choices that you have in order to get yourself to the top of Mount Kosciuszko. You can either drive to the Charlotte Pass ski resort and walk or bike in from there or you can drive to the Thredbo ski resort and catch a chairlift up to Eagles Nest where the walking track to the summit begins. Both options meet at Rawson Pass where there the path continues as a single track to the top.

Charlotte Pass Option
This option is the longer of the two at 9 kilometres (5.6 miles) in length one way. In the summer time it can be hiked on foot or ridden on mountain bike along the well made gravel road to Rawson Pass. From there the bikes must be left and the remaining one kilometre hiked to the top. It is not possible to drive to Charlotte Pass in the winter time but over snow travel can be arranged from the Perisher Blue ski resort.

Thredbo Option
This is the option that we chose due to the fact that it was a shorter 6.5 kilometres (4 miles) one way distance making it easier for our children to walk the distance. We also liked the fact that we would also get to have a chairlift ride up and down the mountain which was spectacular and a real highlight for our kids. This path is mostly a raised steel board-walk which allows the delicate plant life up there to remain untouched and for the streams to flow underneath clean and clear.

In the winter time, both the road from Charlotte Pass and the track from Thredbo are marked by snow poles which provide a guide for cross-country skiers to traverse.

Find Your Way To The Top Of Australia

When you zoom in on this map in satellite view you can see the thin black line that is the steel board-walk. You can then follow it back to the top of the chairlift at Thredbo. Also visible is the vehicle access road which goes off to the right down to Charlotte Pass. You can also see the highest public toilets in Australia at Rawson Pass where these two tracks meet to begin the final ascent to the top.

Heading Up The Chairlift

This was taken from lower down not long after we first hopped on the chairlift. The big wide open grassy areas are the ski runs in the winter and the tracks criss crossing the field are downhill mountain bike tracks and hiking tracks. You can choose to hike up and down the mountain to the start of the Mount Kosciuszko trail, but we chose the easier option.

The Start Of The Thredbo To Kosciuszko Trail

The start of this track is paved for the first kilometre or so until you cross a spectacular creek crossing. This is a good spot to pause and sit by the stream that is the headwaters of the mighty Snowy River.

You Will Need A Jacket

The weather can change very quickly up here at these altitudes so even though it was sunny in these photos, it was still quite cold with a strong wind and we were prepared for rain.

My Head Got Cold

A warm Beanie is handy too in this type of climate. I started out wearing a bucket hat to keep the sun off my head but the wind kept wanting to blow it off my haed and it was not warm enough. So out came the beanie.

Sibling Support

My 9 year old son struggled initially and needed the support of his 11 year old sister along the way a few times. He seemed to get more energy the closer we got to the top and was actually the first one of us to reach the summit after he ran off ahead!

Mount Kosciuszko In Winter

Maybe one day I will attempt to reach the summit in the winter time so that I can snowboard from the highest point in the land. Thee guys did it on skis.

Is There An End?

The path at times seemed endless with it disappearing into the distant horizon much of the time. But eventually the summit was in sight which gave us something to aim towards. We played games with the kids jumping onto these rocks and then back on to the path to keep them from getting bored.

Lake Cootapatamba

Lake Cootapatamba is located 800 metres south of the summit of Mount Kosciuszko and is the highest altitude lake in Australia. This is the view from the Thredbo to Rawson Pass trail.

Winter Or Summer

Which Season Would You Choose To Climb To the Top Of Australia?

Loading

Definitely summer. Winter would be far too difficult.

I would give winter a go. I love a challenge and all that fresh powder would be amazing.

TransplantedSoul says:

I find that it is easier to dress warmly for the cold than to deal with heat. I think the winter would be great.

rorymullen says:

Winter for sure, I am from Maine so any winter in Australia would be a slight discomfort to us Mainahs

Thredbo Is In Sight

We all suddenly found a burst of energy once we could see the buildings of Thredbo. Our trek was nearly over. The whole return journey seemed a lot easier than the walk to Mount Kosciuszko though. We had less stops and the kids seemed happier to be walking. Perhaps it was the joy in knowing that they had achieved a great feat that spurred them on.

The Chairlift Down To Thredbo

The end of the trek and a nice relaxing ride back down to Thredbo Village.

It was immensely rewarding knowing that we had done this 13 kilometre walk as a family. Together we had all supported each other when we were tired and struggled on through to the end. It was mainly my 9 year old son who struggled mostly, but we all found it challenging on some level. We all slept very well that night indeed and woke feeling a little tired and a bit sore the next day. But we returned to Thredbo the day after this climb for some mountain biking and then checked out some other parts of Kosciuszko National Park. It was the following day when it really hit and we had to have a rest day!
