There is a large quantity of accessories available for mountain bikes and it is possible to spend as much as you did on the bike. But a lot of the accessories are gimmicks and are not needed for typical mountain biking. Instead of buying those fancy mountain bike accessories, invest on safety gears and accessories.
Essential Mountain Bike Accessories
HelmetMountain Bike Helmet is the most obvious accessory for mountain biking. It is advisable for any cyclist to wear a helmet and it is particularly important if you are going to be mountain biking. It is common to fall off your bike when mountain biking off road and the surface can be unforgiving. A good solid helmet is necessary to protect you head from any impact with the ground, trees or rocks.
Cycle Shorts
Mountain biking on rough bumpy roads is very hard on the body. It is very common for cyclists to have a sore bottom after a hard days mountain biking. A good pair of cycle shorts will help absorb some of the impact.Bike Gloves

For the same reason as above, gloves are an important part of your mountain bike kit. A lot of people overlook gloves, but they do absorb a significant amount of the shock that travels up through the handlebars. Gloves with gel padding are the best ones to buy for mountain biking.
Other Clothing

If you are going to be out in the countryside for a day, or even half a day, make sure you protect yourself from the weather. A lightweight waterproof jacket is needed in case of rain. An outer layer is a good idea on hot sunny days to protect your skin from the harmful sunrays.
Bike Shoes
The mountain bikes pedals and the riding that you are planning to do, will determine the kind of shoes that you shall buy for the mountain bike adventures. You will need the shoes that have special cleats if you have clip less pedals. For mountain biking you will need a good pair of comfortable & durable shoes with a stiff sole. If you are not sure about the shoes that you should choose, ask for assistance at the local bike shop.Repair kit

Mountain bikes are prone to breaking down when you least expect it. A basic repair kit is a great mountain bike accessory to own and can be a real lifesaver. This should contain a puncher repair kit, allen key, screw driver (to adjust the front and rear derailleur) and a pump. Other equipment includes a spoke tool, spanners and a bottom bracket tool. Of course, a lubricant is essential!
Bike bottles and cages
Make sure you carry plenty of liquid when mountain biking. You should buy a cage to hold a water bottle. If it will fit, two cages is a good idea so that you can carry extra liquid.
Hydration backpack

When you go adventuring on your mountain bikes a hydration backpack or water bottle is something, which you would want to believe as a lifesaver. Having a way to hydrate, as bicycling can really dehydrate you, your body will feel some respite and have a better time.
Cycle lights

If you are going to do any cycling at night, you will need lights. There is no point taking the risk, as it is easy for cars to not see you.
Lock

If you are going to leave your mountain bike unattended for any length of time, then you will need a lock. Of course this depends on where you live, but in most places, bikes are stolen on a frequent basis. You can get locks that come with a guarantee against breaking.

Great lens - 5 stars! Extra parts needed when you go UP a ski lift and come flying down, going over jumps, etc - they make you wear body armour! For Articles, News and Resources on Bicycle Parts, check out Bicycle Parts. From saddles to handlebars to special wheels! Posted June 17, 2008 |

I'm from the Sierra Mountains around Tahoe, and weather can change quickly when your far from civilization so you must be prepared for anything and wear protective gear when mountain biking. Great tips and shopping! Posted November 18, 2007 |
