Mountain Dew Challenge

A Month Without The Dew
This is a simple challenge to myself, and I invite others to follow, to go an entire month without drinking any Mt. Dew. Now this challenge for others can be no soda in general, Mt. Dew is actually the only soda I drink, so in essence this is a no soda for a month challenge.
Giving up the Dew is not as easy I would hope, I already know this because last time I tried this I made it a week. So what's different this time?
Well for starters there is this lens. When I can put down my daily accomplishments of no Dew I will feel so much more motivated to continue. I know I also have the encouragement from my girlfriend Erin Dickinson, and other members of my family.
Dew has also become a crutch with how I deal with stress at work. Drinking and eating unhealthy when I'm stressed has caused me to put on about 30 lbs since this time last year, and I am NOT happy with this. I will now be turning to eating and drinking better, and using exercise as my outlet for the stress.
I'm also going to be making this challenge last a little longer than a month because I intend to start this challenge on May 30, 2011 and not have a Dew until the July 4th holiday.
Can I make it? I believe I can, but the question is...could you? Think you can? Join the challenge today!

The Love Of Dew
However I have said goodbye to the Dew for a month in a that I probably shouldn't have; I had a can of original Dew at lunch, and two medium cups of Baha Blast with my Taco Bell dinner.
Okay yeah not the way I should have done it, but if I'm going to go at least a month without, I believe I deserved it.
Alright I'm ready, let's do THIS!

Day 1
5-30-2011
So Day 1 has come to a close and I can honestly say this will be a piece of cake. I mean I don't need a crutch like Mt. Dew to get me through the day, I have so many other outlets of survival I won't even notice the absence of Mt. Dew.
Oh who am I kidding? This sucks.
One doesn't truely realize how much they depend on something until it is removed from one's life. Mt. Dew seems to allow me the ability to deal with people, especially family members. The key to success will have to be limiting interaction with family; spent only a couple of hours with them today, and I wanted a Dew so bad I almost said "Screw this, it's only day one, I'll restart tomorrow." Once I start down this slope there is no turning back though.
But I can do this!
And besides I've already got one day in the books with only another...what 34 left to go? That's nothing, I got this.

Day Dew...I Mean 2
5-31-2011
Seriously folks, I have never gone more than two days without a Dew, and I'm already set to explode as is, so what's going to happen tomorrow, I can't say, really, I can't.
I can tell you this though, people need to learn how to drive around here, because these stupid (BLEEEEEEEEEEPs) don't know what they are doing.
I had things that I wanted to do tonight but because I'm so stressed and am unable to go for the Dew I've decided I'm just going to watch TV and nobody needs to ask me a darn thing unless they really want to be snapped at.
Tomorrow I need to find a better stress reliever and a substitution for the Dew (Water just isn't going to cut it).

Day 3
6-1-2011
A little more relaxed today, not as angry with my surroundings, so that means less stress, which equals less urge to reach for a Dew. This change of attitude of course is thanks to my girlfriend Erin, who was nice of enough to call me midday to see how I was doing. This may be the key to success for me, getting midday inspiration.
This evening though I learned that I may have to give up Taco Bell. I normally wash down my food with a Baha Blast Mt. Dew (which is exclusive to Taco Bell) but instead decided to give sweet tea a try. This just didn't work for me. I left Taco Bell craving a Dew so bad it was unbearable; my brother actually had to stand in front of the doors to keep me from going back in to get my Dew.
If I can just make it through this first week, I'll be okay though...hopefully.

Day 7
6-5-2011
I have officially made it an entire week without having any Mt. Dew whatsoever!
Honestly it has been a very tough week for me, I know that's sad, but it's the truth. Dew is what I have turned to when I'm angry, sad, or even just looking to relax; therefore you could conclude that Mt. Dew is my alcohol (Is there an AA type of program for Dew abuse? I know multiple others that could use this as well).
Now also remember here that I've given up soda entirely, so this is a bigger deal then one might think. I've had a lot of fruit punch, ice tea, water, and not to mention diet shakes because well I'm fat.
If you haven't started this challenge I encourage you to do so, it's never too late to start, and always better to do when you know you have a support network. (Even if you are reading this after I've accomplished my goal, I will still support you no matter when you decide to start this challenge.)

Day 16
6-14-2011
I know I know I haven't updated in a while, I'm sorry. Most of you probably thought I had either given up or died by now huh. Well sorry to disappoint because I'm 16 days in with no Dew whatsoever.
It's become a little easier to resist, but at the same time, I would be happy with just a single can. I'd be lying if I said it wasn't on my mind all the time, but I have found substitutions (kinda).
On the plus side after 16 days with no Dew, I believe if you cut me I'd actually bleed red instead of green. That's progress right?

Day 22
6-20-2011
I'm nearing the home stretch and can honestly say I know I'm going to make it. It was a rough start but after week 2 everything seemed to find its stride and I was able to find things to drink to replace the Dew.
I do seem to be a little less hyper too, which makes the coworkers happy fore I was driving them bananas.
The thing that has so far gotten me through this though, is my girlfriend Erin, without her supprt I couldn't have made it this far, nor would I be able to finish. She is so wonderful.
How are you folks doing with the challenge?
And for you slackers, what are you waiting for? Start today, you won't regret it.

Day 29
6-27-2011
I'M IN THE HOME STRETCH, YAY!!!!
Ok so I just have to make it one more week and I will have successfully completed the Mt. Dew Challenge!
But never fear for I will not just be jumping back onto the Dew train. No I have actually learned that I can survive without the Dew, therefore it will be a beverage of moderation for me. Kinda like the way many should treat their liqur, only once in a while and ever so often.
It has been a long journey, and there are still times when I'd just like to reach out and grab a can of Dew, but then I realize that I have put way too much effort into this, and I'm not about to squander it here and now.
How are you guys doing? Keeping up are you?

Day 35
7-3-2011
One More Day!!!!!!!!!! Ok not so much. Well yes and no. Yes tomorrow I will have made it to the 4th of July, which was my originally goal, however I have decided that this close to 40 days I will just go ahead and make it to 40.
Why? Well why not? Many people give up something for 40 days at a time, and though it may not seem like something that significant but to me, this was a great challenge.
So how are you guys doing?

Day 36 - Challenge Completed!!
7-4-2011
Happy Fourth of July!!!
Ok so I have officially made it to the completion point of this challenge (though I will be carrying this out for atleast 40 days now). I am really proud of myself, and I'm proud of all of those that have or are in the process of taking this challenge.
At the beginning I didn't think I was going to make it, I wanted a Dew so bad. But I've hung in there and all that hard work has paid off; I've proven to myself that I can do just about anything once I put my mind to it. YAY ME!!!!

Day 40
7-8-2011
Forty days already? Really?
Well this is the end of my personal challenge and a successful end it is. I has gone without any Mt. Dew for 40 days and I know it doesn't seem like a big deal for some, but to me this is a huge step forward in my life. I have proven to myself that I can give up something that I hold dear to myself and survive.
Now that it's over however, I'm still not just going to run out and drink a whole bunch of Dew, that would kinda defeat the entire purpose huh. I will however drink Dew from time to time, but will make the best attempt to have no more than three a week and never twice a day. So I'll have to choose on Sunday's whether to wash down my Chinese lunch with a crisp refreashing Dew or to wait until dinner where I'll be having Taco Bell. I'm leaning towards the Taco Bell because they have Baja Blast and I LOVE Baja Blast.
And even though my challenge is complete I still encourage those of you take on this challenge; you have my support and encouragement the entire way.

- I have went off Mtn. Dew once for over a year and I got re-addicted (when I started back to school). I was re-addicted for about three months. Then I went six months without, so now I can actually just drink it without getting addicted. It's nice to be able to enoy something without getting seriously hooked on it.
