Our food supply is fragile

Grocery stores don't stock weeks of food anymore. Most keep only 72 hours of food on the shelves. If the trucks stop rolling in your area during a crisis, the store shelves will be emptied almost immediately. In fact, expect a shortage of mainstay items like milk and bread to occur similar to what happens before an approaching hurricane hits. Those who are aware of the problem but who haven't already made preparations will engage in a last-minute rush to buy extra supplies.

THE POWER OF FEMA

Unfortunately, if some executive orders and emergency powers are enacted, FEMA will have the legal power to actually confiscate and redistribute food. This makes it all the more likely that farmers will harvest it and HIDE IT in order to keep it. And that means even less food making it to the cities.

Refuse to Stand in Line

People standing in a Food Line

Remember, if you have your own food supply, your family will never have to stand in a food line and ask for help.

You can do a lot if you start early. Also, you need a reasonable plan to get food supplies that will store well and don't cost too much. You need to plan in order to make the right decisions. Let's look at that.

Seven Mistakes You Can Make with Food Storage

There are seven major mistakes that people can make when they decide to store food :

1. Variety - a lot of people only store the four basic items, wheat, milk, honey, and salt. Besides not being a complete diet, you can get "appetite fatigue" for lack of variety.

2. Extended Staples - don't put all your eggs in one basket. Store dehydrated and freeze-dried foods as well as home-canned and store-bought canned goods.

3. Vitamins - must be stored along with your food in order to get proper nutrition.

4. Quick-and-Easy and Psychological Foods - quick-and-easy foods can help you through the times when you may be under too much stress to cope with preparing food. No-cook foods such as freeze-dried foods are wonderful since they require almost no preparation.

5. Balance - keep balance in mind as you build your food storage. Buy a variety of things rather than a large quantity of one.

6. Containers - always store your bulk foods in food-grade storage containers. You can also buy foods that are packed in nitrogen in #10 cans. Nitrogen will give the food a very long shelf like.

7. Use Your Storage - you must use your food storage in order to know what to do with it. Replace depleted items as necessary, thereby continually rotating your supply.

Use Quality Food

Rotate, Rotate, RotateYour food storage program is only as good as the food that goes into it. It cannot get any better than what originally goes in, but it can certainly get worse. All stored foods degrades in nutrient content and palatability until they reach the time when no one wants to eat them.

You need to date all of your food containers and do the most important thing, which is rotate, rotate, rotate. You use from your food storage in order to know how to use it when you really need to. For this, you should use older stored food and replace it with new.

Shelf Life of Stored Food

There are basically two types of shelf lives. The first shelf life is the nutritional content of the food. Food begins to degrade from the moment it is harvested. Also, there are three factors that determine nutritional content. The food's initial nutritional content, the processing the food underwent before being placed in storage, and the storage conditions.

The second shelf life to consider is the food's useful life. This is the point at which the food undergoes undesirable changes in taste, texture, color, and cooking-ability. There comes a point when it is no longer desirable to eat.

Temperature, Moisture, and Light

One key to prolonging the shelf life of your stored food lies in lowering the temperature of the area in which it's stored. Ideally, your food storage area should be above 32 degrees F, and below 72 degrees F.

Ideally, your food storage area should have a low humidity level. This is not always possible, so you will want your storage containers to be impervious to moisture, and there to be a very low moisture content inside. It is best to keep storage containers off the floor and out of direct contact with exterior walls to reduce changes of condensation.

Finally, you do not want to store your food containers in direct light. Preferably, your food storage area should be in a closet or other dark area.

Getting Started

Now that you've made the decision to store food for your family, how should you get started? You need to purchase food from a company that has both experience and high quality manufacturing processes.

Oregon Freeze Dry has been in business for over 45 years and makes the popular Mountain House freeze-dried foods. They are the #1 choice because they make the best tasting freeze-dried meals that are convenient, easy to prepare, and have a long shelf life.

Here are some important facts about the company:

1. They started business in 1963, when they began drying fruit for a General Foods cereal.

2. They worked with the Department of Defense to develop and produce military rations that tasted better, weighed less, and were easier to prepare than canned rations.

3. By the early 1970's, they were making their Mountain House® line of freeze-dried foods for outdoor recreational use.

4. In the 1980's, they began to manufacture private label packaged food products and expanded our food ingredient line.

5. They have been a favorite of backpackers since the 1960s.

6. They were a pioneer in the commercial development of freeze-dried meals, and continue to be the world's leader in freeze-dry technology.

7. In the 1960's, they worked with the NASA in adapting their meals to meet the requirements of the space program. This breakthrough in food technology was used aboard most of the Apollo missions, and today they provide most of the food used on the shuttle flights.

8. The Mountain House product line consists of over 58 selections, including single-serve, double-serve, and four-serve entrees. The most popular are double-serve entrees, which include over 25 flavors to choose from.

Mountain House Year Supply Food Unit - Platinum Reserve

The Platinum Reserve Year Supply Food Unit is one of the most popular food units. It's made to bring you and your family greater peace-of-mind and security in today's uncertain times. It contains many of the most popular Mountain House foods as well as many 'No-Cook' foods.

Your unit will provide over 2000 calories per day for one person for one year, or a family of 4 for 3 months! It comes with a total of 168 #10 cans (large resturant size cans) that comes packed in 28 cases for easy storage.

All Mountain House #10 canned freeze-dried foods have a 25 YEAR Shelf-Life... the LONGEST of ANY storable foods!

Simple Food Preparation

Mountain House freeze-dried foods are easy to prepare-just add hot water...wait 10 minutes...and eat! If a heat source is not available, room temperature or cold water can be used, too. Because no cooking is needed, these foods require much less water and fuel than most fresh, frozen or dehydrated foods (further conserving these two precious commodities).

25 Year Shelf-Life

Mountain House freeze-dried foods are packed in airtight NITROGEN PACKED #10 cans or pouches. Up to 98% of the residual oxygen has been removed. Their unique canning process uses both vacuum oxygen removal and nitrogen flushing. This is a time consuming and slightly more costly process...but well worth it. It is the same process mandated by the U.S. Military for whom we also can. Our foods will have the longest shelf life available...up to 30 years! We've been around for 40 years so we know first hand. Each of our cans is coated with a protective enamel inside and out for double protection, including the lid. The cans contents are protected until you are ready to open and use them. After opening, we recommend using the contents within 1 to 2 weeks for best results and taste; using the convenient resealable plastic lid between uses. Treat any leftover food as you would fresh food.

Taste the Difference!

Mountain House freeze-dried foods taste superior to competitive products because they start with fresh or frozen foods, then cook and prepare them, and finally freeze-dry them ourselves. All the goodness, flavor, and taste are locked in just if you had hand-made them yourself from scratch. In comparison, other food companies do not freeze-dry or cook their own foods. They blend the dry components of other companies and package them. Mountain House foods tastes as close to fresh, frozen, or better, as you can get. Backpackers, for example, consistently rate us #1 year after year as the best tasting foods and ease of preparation.
