The Alps (Europe) have some of the most spectacular scenery you could wish for, as this mountain poster collection shows. In fact, no matter where you are, a mountain poster can transport you instantly to the Alps mountain range.

Austrian Alps
(The Tirol)
The Mountains of Austria
The Austrian Tyrol and Salzburg Regions
The Tyrol (or Tirol) and the Salzburg provinces of Austria are home to alpine scenery which is both dramatic and as pretty as a postcard!
The tallest mountain in Austria is the Grossglockner (in the province of Salzburg). However, Switzerland and France have higher mountains, so there are few truly famous Austrian peaks.
The Austrian Alps nonetheless are a lovely stretch of the Alps mountain range, and were the setting for The Sound of Music. The towns and villages have onion-domed churches and flowers spill from the window boxes of chalets. As the poster below shows, in winter the snow transforms the landscape into a true winter wonderland.
Bavarian Alps
(Bavaria, Germany)

The Bavarian Alps, in the south of Germany
The southernmost part of Germany, in the state of Bavaria, is home to several mountain ranges belonging to the Northern Limestone Alps.
The highest peak is the Zugspitze.
Bavaria has a strong sense of culture and is rich in traditions. Many involve food and beer, including the world-famous Oktoberfest!
French Alps

The French Alps in the south-east of France
France includes in its borders 2 major European mountain ranges: The Alps and the Pyrenees.
It also boasts the highest mountain in the Alps and in (western) Europe, the mighty Mont Blanc. The first successful ascent of Mont Blanc took place in 1786 and it is a 'must' for European climbers today.
Paragliders and even a small plane have landed on the summit, which also was the scene of a party (complete with a hot tub) in 2007!

The Italian Alps, including the Dolomites
The Dolomites are one of the ranges of the Italian Alps, which are found in the north of the country, bordering France, Switzerland and Austria.
The Italian peaks are found on the sunny side of the Alps, and combine traditional alpine charm with a relaxed, Mediterranean style of living.
The distinctive jagged peaks of the Dolomites are found in the north east, an area where political borders have shifted over the last century. As a result, many of the population in this area of Italy speak German as their mother tongue.
Swiss Alps

The world-famous Swiss Alps
The Swiss Alps have many of the highest and most famous alpine peaks, among them the triangular Matterhorn, the beautiful Jungfrau and the challenging Eiger (whose name means Ogre).
The Alps here, as in the neighbouring countries, have many faces. High peaks are crowned with snow, huge glaciers upon their flanks. Below them, on the low slopes and foothills, cows with bells graze and alpine flowers grow. This scenery was the setting for the Johanna Spyri story Heidi.
Pretty villages still nestle in the valleys between these giants and today trains run with Swiss efficiency through the spectacular landscape.
