Mountains of North America

Let us begin with the magnificent Rockies.

The Rocky Mountains (as you may well know, if you were awake in your geography classes) are a range of mountains almost 3,000 miles (a little under 5,000 km) long, running from British Columbia (Canada) to New Mexico (USA).

Some of North America's loveliest national parks can also be found in this region. Wildlife that you might see include elk, beavers, coyotes and moose.

European Mountain Ranges

The main mountain range of Europe is the Alps, which run from France and across Switzerland into the Tyrol region of Austria. Here you can find some of the most majestic mountain scenery of all.

However, there are other lesser known but equally beautiful mountains in Europe.

The ancient Highlands of Scotland are weathered and rounded by age. The fjords of Norway have stunning mountain backdrops. Italy has the pointed Dolomites (which belong to the Alpine range) and the Appennines, Spain the Pyrenees.

Eastern Europe too has its mountain ranges: the Carpathian Mountains and the Tatras range are two examples. Russia is home to the Ural and Caucasus mountain ranges.

The highest mountain in Europe is Mont Blanc.

Mountains in Asia

Asia has some of the most impressive and highest mountains in the world.

The famous Himalaya range is where you'll find the mighty Everest and many other awe-inspiring peaks. Mount Everest, at 8,848 metres (29,029 ft), is the world's highest peak and so far 210 people have died in attempting to climb it.

Japan is famous to the beautiful Mount Fuji -- which looks as though it was made with painters in mind!

Africa's Mountains

Africa might call to mind great deserts and flat lands, but this is one of the most diverse continents of all.

In the North of Africa can be found the Atlas Mountains.

There are several mountain ranges in South Africa, although none so famous perhaps as the Table Mountain. If you get the chance to visit Cape Town, you can travel to the top of Table Mountain by cable car. Keen hikers can also make the ascent on foot.

Tanzania is home to the volcano Mount Kilimanjaro -- the tallest mountain in Africa.

Mountain Ranges in Austraila and New Zealand

When it comes to magnificent mountains, don't forget New Zealand or Australia!

If you watched The Lord of the Rings films, you'll have seen for yourself how spectacular the Southern Alps of New Zealand are.

Did you know the Eastern Highlands (or Great Dividing Range) in Australia is one of the longest mountain ranges in the world?

Uluru or Ayers Rock is an 'island mountain' - the last remaining rock of an ancient mountain range.

Our final destination on this world tour of mountains is South America.
