In 2008 The "Too Big to Fail" Banks Almost Brought Down Our Entire Economy
I remember many years ago when Donald Trump was going bankrupt, but didn't. Some credited the save to his genius. Well, maybe some. But others reminded us of the truth that "If you owe the bank $100,000 dollars and can't pay it, you are in big trouble. If you owe the bank $100 million and can't pay it, the bank is in big trouble." So the bankers who Trump owed had to be very cooperative.
Well, the crisis of two years ago was that on ten years worth of steroids. So to save us, the taxpayers loaned them a lot of money, money some say has been paid back, with interest, other say they still owe.
What happened, besides the higeness of the banks was that they were also involved in intricate deals that even highly competent economists couldn't understand. And that was the point. The less anyone else could understand, even the less likely anyone could stop them.
Before the 1990's banks were under strict regulation and each bank was only allowed to do so much. They couldn't operate on an inter-state level and they couldn't sell stocks, for example
However in a 15 year period the were 'Banks Gone Wild". One of the finer practices that they started was to make very risky loans, loans no bank would have made previously, then sell them back and forth to each other, so that they would profit is the loan was paid, and profit if it wasn't. They also bundled these loans with good loans so that some buyers were innocent and unsuspecting of what they were getting.
This was on of the more understandable of their shenanigans, one of the less unethical. And it was all devastating when it started to collapse on you and me. We had to pay for it.
Wells Fargo Swollows Wachovia, But Did It Matter?
When I first moved to Raleigh the easiest bank to deal with was Wachovia. For many years I found them helpful and easy to work with. Yes, they were getting bigger and involved in many of the shenanigans, but they served me well. Then they were bought by Wells Fargo, one of the demonic top three and it just started getting worse. This was the last straw...
I keep a very low balance in my checking, thus I always have overdraft protection. If I wrote a check (or the computer paid one of my automatic payments) without funds, it would kick in. I would then go on line and transfer the money to the overdraft protection to pay that off. It took seconds. I never bounced a check and paid the 'loan' with in days.
Then the over draft protection was taken over by the Wells Fargo part, which didn't affect me, until they maid it impossible to transfer money to pay it off. Now I must go into the bank to pay it. They said it was because this was part of the shift to Wells Fargo. I told them that making it harder to pay meant that they would get more fees and interest. We are both correct, but the bank is still getting more money at our expense.
I had been threatening to move all my money to my credit union (RTP Credit Union), but this was the final straw that got me to do it. Well, start the process, I have all the accounts opened, but it is going to take time to get all the direct deposits, etc. But the ball is rolling, I am on my way out.
Are You Ready to Move Your Money?
Is it time for you to stop feeding the banks that are "too big to fail" and worse yet, too complicated to understand, even by the experts?
When Are You Moving Your Money and Where?

I am linking to moneyyourmoney.info right now or I am looking for a credit union!
_Joan_ says:
My worry has been that if I moved to a small bank it would be difficult to get to my branch during times when I have transportation issues (there are 3 MegaBanks within walking distance of where I live). But this latest round of fees has convinced me that it's time to find a credit union.

I sticking with my bank here in the UK being as I'm one of the millions that own it!! If anyone has Fred Goodwins address we could all nip over and ask for a 'sub' from him - interest free of course! p.s. check out the Irish guy on you tube -An Irishman abroad tells it like it is for a candid take - it does come with a profanity alert!! though.
darciefrench says:
I'm in canada- but thinking of eventually moving everything to Paypal or something similar. I myself am likely going bankrupt next spring when I can include my student loans. Mental illness and social work don't make for a great capacity to repay (the money I needed to attend university and raise kids as a single parent.)
Othercat says:
I have 7 accounts at 2 banks and a credit union. I'm about to drop one bank because they were bought by a larger bank and now the fees are ridiculous. They actually charge when I move money between my own accounts!
I am perfectly happy with the Bank of Americas and you are a trouble maker (or I don't have the time)
SAMEPRINCESS10 says:
Your not a trouble maker. Who put that on there? What little i save from doing chores/work. I save, or spend on things needed within my family. I share when things like Christmas gifts are needed. Elizabeth Warren: The Quiet Hero Who Could Save Us
If John Boehner Will Let Her
Barrack Obama waited too long to appoint her. I know there were reasons and she doesn't want as much power as I would like to give her, but she seems to be the only hope we have now.Personally, I would like her cloned so she could be a Supreme Court Justice and President in 2016.
Neil Bush and More About the Savings and Loan Scandal
The Bush Crime Family
Neil, George Jr., George Sr., and Jeb Bush
No, the Bush's aren't the only people involved in fleecing the American people by ruining the banking system, but they always seem to be involved. Neal was heavily involved in the Savings and Loan scandal that cost US taxpayers billions and George II was the one who initiated the recent banking bailout, although many believe that was Barack Obama.
"The Savings and Loan industry had been experiencing major problems through the late 60s and 70s due to rising inflation and rising interest rates. Because of this there was a move in the 1970s to replace the role of S&L institutions with banks.
In the early 1980s, under Reagan, regulatory changes took place that gave the S&L industry new powers and for the first time in history measures were taken to increase the profitability of S&Ls at the expense of promoting home ownership.
A history of the S&L situation can be found here:
http://www.fdic.gov/bank/historical/s&l/
What is important to note about the S&L scandal is that it was the largest theft in the history of the world and US tax payers are who was robbed.
The problems occurred in the Savings and Loan industry as they relate to theft because the industry was deregulated under the Reagan/Bush administration and restrictions were eased on the industry so much that abuse and misuse of funds became easy, rampant, and went unchecked."

What Do You Know About Credit Unions?
Has The Bank Bailout Just Made It Easier for Them to Grow and Devour?
Credit Unions VS Banks
So, which is better a small bank or a credit union? There are pros and cons to both.
1. Credit unions don't always have all the functions of banks. But that does change. A year ago, I didn't move all my money because my credit union didn't have business accounts, however, when I opened my checking account last week, they now do do business accounts, so I can use it for full service.
2. Local banks can be bought out by the big guys. In fact, that is still happening at an alarming rate, so you would have to move your money again. Credit unions don't get bought out.
3. Not all credit unions are federally insured, but that is rare. Just make sure before you open up.
4. You have to have an association to join a credit union. However, many of them are easy to find. I got into the RTP Credit union because I worked in a place that was located in the Research Triangle Park. Once you belong, you are in for life, even if you leave the association.
5. Moveyourmoney.info only gives names of banks, but I would look for a credit union and then find a way to join. But a local bank is better than nothing.
Banks are still banks and in this day and age, they can be loose. Even after all the problems with defaults because banks gave loans to unqualified people, they are still making these loans. Recently a client of mine got a loan to buy a washer and drier. She has taken bankruptcy, can only find part time work and struggles every month to pay her mortgage. She is a hard working, good person, but hardly a candidate for a loan, yet she got one.
In the process of opening my credit union checking account I asked for my over draft protection. Instead of the usual 'instant approval' my application is in the hands of the officer who has called me twice to ask about my various sources on income. Multiple Streams are unusual to him and he wants to understand circumstances of someone who is asking for money. Its a bit of a pain, but it is also confidence producing. This institution is not going to get into trouble making bad loans.
