All Movie Musicals, All The Time

Musicals have been a staple on the stage since anyone can remember, but especially since the first part of last century. Musicals like "Cats," "Les Miserables," "The Sound of Music," "Chicago," and "The Lion King" have captured audiences of all ages. To make theatre more accessible, many of these wonderful shows have been turned into movies as well. These quizzes are all about just such movies. That does not include movies that are musicals, with lots of songs, but have not been on the stage as well. Enjoy!

Should All Musicals Become Movies?

The 2011 Tony Awards were on right before I made this lens. A lot of new musicals are out that look pretty amazing. My sister, her boyfriend, and I were watching the awards, making lists of shows we'd like to see. (Read: all of them.) Wicked was just in our town too, and we got to see it. I love live theatre, and there is nothing like it anywhere else. But I also know LOTS of people who will never see the shows.

There are lots of shows I will never see because they won't ever come to my city and I can't afford to go to New York or Chicago all the time. Lots of people miss out on shows because they are expensive. Even for me, our community theatre (which does a GREAT job!) is too pricy for me to see regularly.

So this begs the question: Should all, or most, musicals (or plays for that matter) be made into movies? Once they hit the cinema, they become hugely available to the general public. I really go back and forth on this question. What do you think?

Hands down: Big River. But not just ANY Big River - the Big River I saw live was AMAZING! Half the cast was hearing, the other half was deaf. The entire story was both voiced and signed. Nothing was lost, everything was enhanced. The story was a feast for the eyes and the ears. The audience, both deaf and hearing, was absolutely entranced, and never wanted it to end. And after the curtain went down, the first thing we all said to one another was, "I want this movie!!!!!"

I don't think all stage shows transfer well to the big screen. We were lucky enough to see Umoja when it was in Windsor and loved it, but seeing it on tv later really made us realize how great the on stage show was. Cute lens though :)

Because I know someone will ask...

"Theatre" is the correct spelling of the art or study of theatre. "Theater" is the spelling of the physical building or place. Many people go back and forth, but I am intentional in using the two words as different things.
