Movie Musicals - Old Favorites and New Hits

Being a Broadway and theater fan, of course I love movie musicals. I grew up anticipating the yearly TV showings of classics like The Sound of Music. Movie musicals really are what led me to my passion for live theater. I hope you enjoy this lens about some of my favorite movie musicals of all time!

Bette Midler gives and incredible performance in this classic movie musical Gypsy. Great tunes like "Everything's Coming Up Roses," "Let Me Entertain You," and "Small World" will keep you entertained.

Why I Love Movie Musicals

How can you not love movie musicals? They've been a staple of American entertainment since the 1930's! Movie musicals introduced the world to the kind of entertainment before only seen on the stage. With the advent of the television, it brought this quality entertainment right into our living rooms.

Each year as a child I would look forward to the annual showings of my favorite movie musicals like The Wizard of Oz and The Sound of Music. Of course this was in the days before VHS and DVD's, so getting to see these great films was truly a special treat. The whole family would gather around the TV with treats like popcorn (Jiffy Pop!) and ice cream and we'd enjoy these classics.

It seems like most new musicals opening are derrived from a movie or from popular culture somewhere. Eg in London we have
    Singin' in the Rain (movie)
    Shrek (movie)
    Ghost (movie)
    Wizard of Oz (movie)
    Matilda (movie)
What with The Body Guard coming soon...I can't help but long for an original opening!
