Movie Releases - Christmas Day 2011

'Tis the season for...war? Well, this holiday season you'll be able to catch four war movies opening up on Christmas day.

Whether you want to see a war story about a horse galloping throughout Europe in a touching, Spielberg-ian tale, the dude who plays Batman helping out women fleeing from the Japanese military, Angelina Jolie's directorial debut about war-torn Bosnia, war against aliens in Russia or the non-war movie you won't lack any new options or old ones for that matter.

If these five movies don't make you want to throw down some leftover Christmas money then check out my two previous Movie Releases for more of Hollywood's movie options:

War Horse

Starring: Tom Hiddleston and Emily Watson; Directed by Steven Spielberg

War

I know what you're thinking, it's been way too long since Steven Spielberg released a movie. Well, if you didn't get your Spielberg fill with The Adventures of Tintin which was released on December 21st, then you'll be glad War Horse is being released on Christmas Day.

Steven Spielberg is the master of turning small stories and every day characters into bigger than life events. The Adventures of Tintin brought us an animated tale about a young man and his dog in search of adventure, War Horse follows a young man who enlists in the army when his horse is sold to the calvary. The adventure mainly follows the horse named Joey through Europe as World War I rages on and focuses on the lives that Joey touches throughout its search to find his master once again.

Based on the novel by Michael Morpurgo, War Horse is trending decently on Rotten Tomatoes with critics but has very favorable feedback amongst early audience screenings. It is also on many critics top choice lists for the year and is nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Picture.

The father often challenged his son by giving him clues that lead him on a mini-adventure and so he sees this opportunity to go on one last mission for answers.

Starring Tom Hanks, Sandra Bullock and Max Von Sydow this dramedy from the director of The Reader and Billy Elliot is sure to make you laugh, cry and become engrossed in the complicated mind of a grieving nine-year-old boy.

In the Land of Blood and Honey

The Balkans - In Turkish Bal means Honey and Kan means Blood. So, there's your title for a film that takes place in the Balkans.

Angelina Jolie wrote and directed this film about a Bosnian woman held captive and the relationship she has with one of her Serbian captors at a camp. They were in love before the Bosnian war in the 1990s but now find each other in uncertain circumstances where the darkness and dangerous motives seem to grow between the two.

There aren't too many critic reviews up yet but check how this movie is faring with fans and critics at Rotten Tomatoes.

I haven't been to the movie theatre in about a year so have missed a lot of good ones. I will have to catch these when they come on TV. Enjoyed the visit!

This lens has a interesting collection of films. The Flowers of War is not for the faint-hearted person, after watching this film I felt really gutted.

I haven't seen The Flowers of War yet. I didn't even know about it until I did this lens but it looks really good. It's probably similar to the book "The Rape of Nanking" which was hauntingly good.

Check out my January movies one and let me know what you think.
