Writers as Depicted in Movies

Ranked #20,161 in Entertainment, #245,973 overall

Screenwriters, Novelists, Documentarians, Memoirists, Writers all....

How the public perceives writers (and maybe even editors) is perhaps influenced a lot by movies (and the novels that perhaps inspired the movies). Writers have a mysterious craft. Some call it an art, others call it a talent, and even others call it a skill.

Writers? They get into all sorts of fixes. Clark Kent (aka "Superman"), Lois Lane, and Jimmy Olsen (well, he was a photographer) worked as journalists at the Daily Planet--and look at the fixes they got into.

Some writers are busybodies--they get involved with all sorts of crimes... even murders! Just look at Jessica Fletcher (Angela Lansbury) in "Murder She Wrote".

Then, you have the writers struggling with that "tyranny of the blank page"... aka "writer's block"--so they have to call upon the Muse -- and the movie "The Muse" shows how some writers handle this.

Some writers search for real-life events to serve as inspiration for their stories. In the movie, "Her Alibi", Tom Selleck plays the part of Phil Blackwood, a mystery writer in a slump... so he goes to a jury trial for inspiration, and brings the defendant home as a houseguest. That's some inspiration!

And then, there's Joan Wilder (played by Kathleen Turner in "Romancing the Stone" and "Jewel of the Nile") who is a romance writer who finds that her real-life adventures become her source for her novels.

I really enjoyed this lens. I consider myself a writer--after all, I've been working on my novel for twenty years--just not a paid one. But that can always change, cant it? Great lens, and loved the video--I'll have to forward that to my daughter, who teaches a course on avoiding plagiarism!
