Cross of iron has amazing battle scenes considering it was made back in the 70s. Super trench, tank and pillbox fighting. It was made during the Kursk campaign.

There is a spectacular scene at the start of a movie where a small British artillery force is waiting and all of a sudden a huge force of Arab horsemen attack down a hill, but the British artillery decimates the Arabs. It looked like a sure massacre at first but turned into a route of the Arabs. Fantastic battle scene, but I don't know the movie. Do you?
  • nickupton Apr 20, 2012 @ 9:45 am | delete
No I don't. I just spent some time searching for it on google but can't find anything. Maybe someone else knows it?

The hell? Where's Private Ryan or Apocalypse now?
  • nickupton Mar 15, 2012 @ 6:30 am | delete
Saving Private Ryan is here and currently voted as the best movie battle scene of all time. I don't like Apocalypse Now at all!
  • Greg Dorrance Sep 12, 2011 @ 11:34 am | delete
How do the fight on Little Round Top or Pickett's Charge from the movie Gettysburg NOT get on this list!?
  • nickupton Oct 3, 2011 @ 8:24 am | delete
Because I haven't seen these movies, but I will certainly look out for them.
  • nickupton Apr 20, 2012 @ 9:46 am | delete
Just watched Pickett's charge. It is very long and slow. I found it very dull to watch to be honest.

I had to vote for D-Day Saving Private Ryan, It's just so intense. I am featuring you on my-top-10-war-movies lens. Great lens have to admit never seen Otoko-tachi no Yamato but I wrote it down and will begin the search to see it.

Brotherhood of War, my man, Brotherhood of War. I haven't once seen it on one of these lists but it desperately needs to be. It has my personal favourite battle scenes in it.
  • nickupton Jul 20, 2011 @ 10:06 pm | delete
Thanks, I added a battle scene from this movie to the "Some more movie battle scenes" section of this lens.
  • nickupton Oct 3, 2011 @ 8:23 am | delete
I bought it and really enjoyed it. Not only good battle scenes but a compelling story too.

I think the sniper scene in Full Metal Jacket is the best battle scene ever. It's a great statement on the futility of the vietnam war,but it's so suspenseful and powerful. The acting by arliss howard as cowboy, trying to keep his squad of marines from panic firing,is so realistic, you believe your actually there. Also, how many war movies actually have a twist in the end?
  • nickupton Mar 15, 2012 @ 6:12 am | delete
I went out and bought this movie and really enjoyed it. I have added one of the battle scenes here - thanks.

Nicely done; I am sure your page will make some war movie fans very happy.
  • poddys Feb 14, 2011 @ 1:43 pm | delete
Great list of battle scenes. Have you seen Waterloo? It's mostly only available on Region 2 though. Gettysburg and Glory have some excellent Civil War battle scenes. Gladiator has some good battle scenes, as has Druids. Blessed by an angel

You may also want to check out the battle for Jerusalem in Kingdom of Heaven. It was quite impressive.
  • nickupton Nov 17, 2010 @ 7:31 am | delete
In fact I have seen it - I enjoyed the movie.
  • Cathy May 24, 2010 @ 12:44 pm | delete
I think you need to watch John Woo's RED CLIFF, and revise your list a bit. The battle at the end of Part II is quite possibly the most impressive battle scene I've ever seen on film. And there's a battle using a Tortoise Formation in Part I that is a close runner-up.

Cool lens. I prefer real battle scenes rather than GGI.

Have to say I didn't like the battle of Geonosis, too much CGI for me. [in reply to Pete]
  • Pete Oct 13, 2009 @ 10:48 am | delete
good list, but battle of geonosis in star wars ep.2 is awesome, also pearl harbour has an epic bombing scene. all the other scenes are brilliant though.
  • nickupton Oct 1, 2009 @ 6:58 am | delete
I agree. [in reply to gideon43]

Saving Private Ryan has easily the best battle scenes ever in war movies, both the beginning and end.
    Zulu also rates pretty highly.
Excellent lens, check out my own list of top war movies sometimes.

LOTR The Return of the King: The cavalry charge and ensuing batle.

Thanks Pyjama Shark, I will take a look at those 2 scenes.
  • Pyjama Shark Jul 21, 2009 @ 9:51 am | delete
Eh, can't stand Saving Private Ryan. Anyway, the climax of the Battle of Britain, and the battle in the snow in Stalingrad are both amazing pieces of cinematography. Good choices with your list!

Without a shadow of a doubt both scenes in Saving Private Ryan
