Movie Remakes We Hate!

Ranked #6,738 in Entertainment, #84,114 overall

Are modern day moviemakers scraping the bottom of the barrel?

Hollywood seems firm in the belief that if something did okay the first time, or didn't do as well as everyone wanted, then it must be perfect to do again. However, re-doing something with a bigger budget, modern movie stars and the powers of CGI does not always lead to an improved product... In fact, sometimes it's just a great way to make an expensive dud.

If you want to take out your wrath on the new-and-unimproved versions of movies you loved but are disappointed in seeing re-done, this is the place! Share your loathing and frustrations with movie remakes. Be sure to add your most hated to the Worst Remake Poll and then vote for the movies that disappointed you the most!

Remake Fever... Again!

Plans are underway to reboot the entire Spider-Man franchise. And Tomb Raider. It's sort of sad what happens when a movie studio starts off with a good thing, goes off the rails and then decides they wish they could take the whole thing back.

Quirky and gothic Tim Buron was neither when he remade THE PLANET OF THE APES. We got Mark Wahlberg, Tim Roth and Helena Bonham Carter in monkey makeup and not much else. This just seemed like some sort of do-over that didn't do anything new.

They try and update too much of the movie

PetSnakes says:

To me a remake should be an almost literal scene by scene recreation of the original concept updated for a more modern feel. A reimaging or reboot as I sometimes hear it called is taking the most basic elements and rewriting the story.

A remake turns out terrible when it tries to sell itself as a remake, but is clearly a reimaging.

RichLeigh says:

They add scenes to the original in a lame attempt to improve the film, all they generally achieve however is that the film is made slightly longer and infinitely less watchable. Some remakes are great, the majority however are terrible. Rob Zombie's 'Halloween' remake is a fine example of where adding new material generally did work, generally it merely serves to weaken the films original quality though. If on the other hand the director chooses to stick rigidly to the original script and recreate the original film scene for scene then all that generally is achieved is a watered down less enjoyable version of the original.

woodpewee says:

I think its hard to replace the actors/actress from the original movie. Other times, its the stupid twists they put on these remakes that make it so bad, ie the Stepford wives - not at all what Ira Levin wrote about. Now they want to remake the classic Rosemary's Baby!! Now that thought is frightening.

Paul_Soderholm says:

The original charm is usually lost

kab says:

I think part of the problem is that the actors already have an interpretation of the character, and don't make their own interpretation.

They don't do anything new or refreshing

squidshe says:

If it aint broke, don't fix it!

Danielle says:

They just xan't get their own ideas. They think it's better to make money off of poop.Kids call me stupid at my school, because I know about movies that are not in theaters yet,but show the preveiws. The thing is they don't even know they're remakes, and they don't know what real motion pictures are.

yourgoldenfuture says:

much is just cheap copy to make money again...

papawu says:

Well...IT'S A REMAKE which means the people putting it out are simply working to gimmick and hype their way into a payday and profit for their studio. Originality and vision has gotten to be nearly nonexistant in Hollywood.

cactusbin says:

It sucked. Terribly. It looked like a rotten piece of cheese compared to a delicious piece of pie.

ANDRI says:

they have no great ideas. they just want popularize in short time.

sethgodin says:

It's because it can never match the beginner's mind and sense of discovery that we had about the first. That and the fact that they are afraid to take risks.

jeffwend says:

The Ladykillers was bad. It had a great cast and good potential, but at the end of the movie, my wife was sleeping and I was left wondering why I sat through it.

Why I Hate THE ISLAND OF DR. MOREAU (1996)

The Island of Dr. Moreau (Unrated Director's Cut)

Amazon Price: $10.85 (as of 06/02/2012)Buy Now

No one's quite sure why this remake came out so stinky, but chances are it had something to do with the fact that Marlon Brando's daughter had just committed suicide, Val Kilmer had just been served with divorce papers, the original director was fired after four days of shooting, and David Thewlis was brought in suddenly to replace another actor who was let go along with director #1. Stick with the 1977 Michael York/Burt Lancaster version.

What the hell makes you think Dahl would have liked Burton's shtty version??

Please he basically took a great book and put it in Tim Burton World because he's incapable of doing anything else; hence why ALL of his re adaptations suck including Charlie and the Chocolate Factory not only suck ass but are NOTHING like the books. Tim Burton's is more of a half adaptation, it doesn't follow the story arc, all of the characters are different and Burton adds his own themes and takes out all of Dahl's.

Dahl took out the meaningless details Burton added in, Charlie's father, Indian Prince story. He also reread the revised script and approved it.

As for the worst remake, the Manchurian Candidate tops my list. They take all the life and emotion out of the original film.

Gosh...What can I Say about a truly heinous idea for yet another remake. Don't get me wrong, there have been a few great remakes, but I just don't see this being one of them.

The worst re-makes I can think of are The Women (SUCH a fantastic movie the first time around) and, above all, Sabrina. I can't even begin to fathom how and why Hollywood thought they could use people other than Humphrey Bogart, William Holden, and (HELLO!) Audrey Hepburn and think it could actually work. Ugh.

In regards to #8: Charlie and the Chocolate Factory was not a remake but a re-adaptation of Roald Dahl's book of the same name.
Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory was merely a half-adaptation with additions not approved by Dahl (he hated the film).

The Burton film stuck more closely to the book, including using Dahl's own words for the Oompa Loompa songs, and followed the outcomes of the other kids. And removed the crap Slugworth subplot that they added to the Wilder version, at least Liccy Dahl was a consultant on Burton's movie.
As to edwardguina, Shakespeare, O'Neil and Williams are hardly summer flims, people have long perferred a good mindless action flick or romatic comedy.

quote "And a blockbuster should be the extraordinary biography of an extraordinary person or event that has happened."
    We've had those-Pearl Harbor/Titanic.
Not every biopic appeals to everybody, I liked Confessions of A Dangerous Mind, hated Ray, loved Autofocus, hated Hoffa, see there ya go!

My Opinion: It is time for Hollywood collectively to stop making movies that cater to the lowest forms of intelligence. These movies are part of the dumbing down process the world is experiencing. So many friends, valued people, will say to me before they head out to the movies "I don't want to think, I want to be entertained and forget life". Well, they have it in spades with more junk like "Ironman", "The Dark Knight" and about 90% of the upcoming summer movie selections. What is wrong with America? It's time to get back to basics, to classics, to O'Neill, Williams and even Shakespeare. There's a place for these "monstrosities" but not as "summer multi-million dollar blockbusters" but as B movies that are made on the cheap.

No movie should cost $40. million dollars. And a blockbuster should be the extraordinary biography of an extraordinary person or event that has happened.

But Hollywood speaks so we get more jerks like Jack Black, Ben Stiller, Vince Vaughn and Adam Sandler filling our screens and emptying our minds. Eventually, I hope, they will empty the theatres.
