What were they thinking?

Hollywood seems firm in the belief that if something did well the first time, then it must be perfect to do again. However, redoing something with a bigger budget, modern movie stars and the powers of CGI does not always lead to an improved product...

If you want to take out your wrath on the new-and-unimproved versions of movies you loved, this is the place!

Better Version or a 2nd Bomb?: THE INCREDIBLE HULK

The most popular character that Marvel Comics has going is the Incredible Hulk. However Ang Lee's big screen version starring Eric Bana was a bomb, so just a few years later, they're trying again with Ed Norton starring as the guy who we don't want to get angry.

Good Idea or Bad Idea?

vote for potential remakes

Even with a spotty track record, it seems like Hollywood just keep deciding to remake more and more movies. Here's your chance to vote for which of these you think is going to be the worst upcoming remake.

Please note: each of these is something someone in La-la land is seriously considering remaking.
If you think an idea might be a good option for a remake, give it an "up" vote. If you think the idea stinks, vote it on down!

The Blog Wrath About Bad Movie Remakes

My memories are obliterated by celluloid
So apparently (and I say that because I can't drag myself to the theater to find out personally) they have ruined another childhood memory with a bad movie remake. How someone could ruin a concept as awesome as Speed Racer is beyond me. ...
The Beast Commands You To Waste Your Friday Afternoon
Today is June 6, an eschatologically and millenially important date even though the last truly significant date connected to the Number of the Beast was marked merely by the release of a bad movie remake. This week's friday afternoon ...
Metal Men
Others may remember the book adaptations, the record, the cheesy tv miniseries, or, depressingly more likely, the bad movie remake. But how many of you recall that the actor who did Marvin's original voice did 4 songs as Marvin the ...
Good lord, she sings
A prostitute/singer named Ashley Alexandra Dupré? Did she ever use the name Susan Alexander? Seriously, didn't Eliot Spitzer see Citizen Kane? Now the story has gone from funny to being a bad movie remake.

Why I Hate Gus Van Sant's remake of PSYCHO

in 100 words or less!

Psycho

Amazon Price: $9.99 (as of 07/09/2008)
List Price: $9.99
Used Price: $1.01

Director Gus Van Sant (Drugstore Cowboy, My Own Private Idaho) decided to remake the Hitchcock classic shot-for-shot, which for a lot of people, made the idea of making a remake of such a good film even worse. In the end, this thing fell flatter than a souffle pulled out of the oven too soon. Even Viggo Mortensen's nekkid butt didn't help it.

Showdown!

What is it about a remake that makes it go bad?

They try and update too much of the movie

woodpewee says:

I think its hard to replace the actors/actress from the original movie. Other times, its the stupid twists they put on these remakes that make it so bad, ie the Stepford wives - not at all what Ira Levin wrote about. Now they want to remake the classic Rosemary's Baby!! Now that thought is frightening.

Paul_Soderholm says:

The original charm is usually lost

kab says:

I think part of the problem is that the actors already have an interpretation of the character, and don't make their own interpretation.

They don't do anything new or refreshing

sethgodin says:

It's because it can never match the beginner's mind and sense of discovery that we had about the first. That and the fact that they are afraid to take risks.

jeffwend says:

The Ladykillers was bad. It had a great cast and good potential, but at the end of the movie, my wife was sleeping and I was left wondering why I sat through it.

The Top Ten List phenomenon is truly epidemic, and I have to tell you that I caught the bug some time ago, and seize every opportunity to create my own Top Ten lists. Why I Hate THE WICKER MAN (2006)

The Wicker Man (Widescreen Unrated/Rated Edition)

Amazon Price: $9.99 (as of 07/09/2008)
List Price: $14.98
Used Price: $0.01

This updated remake of the Edward Woodward/Christopher Lee cult thriller seems to take all the thrill out and replace it with over-acting. Seeing this, you'd never guess that Nicholas Cage once got a Best Actor Oscar, and many folks thought that after this he should be forced to give it back.

What is the Worst Movie Remake ever?

Why I Hate THE ISLAND OF DR. MOREAU (1996)

The Island of Dr. Moreau (Unrated Director's Cut)

Amazon Price: $5.99 (as of 07/09/2008)

No one's quite sure why this remake came out so stinky, but chances are it had something to do with the fact that Marlon Brando's daughter had just committed suicide, Val Kilmer had just been served with divorce papers, the original director was fired after four days of shooting, and David Thewlis was brought in suddenly to replace another actor who was let go along with director #1. Stick with the 1977 Michael York/Burt Lancaster version.

My Opinion: It is time for Hollywood collectively to stop making movies that cater to the lowest forms of intelligence. These movies are part of the dumbing down process the world is experiencing. So many friends, valued people, will say to me before they head out to the movies "I don't want to think, I want to be entertained and forget life". Well, they have it in spades with more junk like "Ironman", "The Dark Knight" and about 90% of the upcoming summer movie selections. What is wrong with America? It's time to get back to basics, to classics, to O'Neill, Williams and even Shakespeare. There's a place for these "monstrosities" but not as "summer multi-million dollar blockbusters" but as B movies that are made on the cheap.

No movie should cost $40. million dollars. And a blockbuster should be the extraordinary biography of an extraordinary person or event that has happened.

But Hollywood speaks so we get more jerks like Jack Black, Ben Stiller, Vince Vaughn and Adam Sandler filling our screens and emptying our minds. Eventually, I hope, they will empty the theatres.

"A geneticist's experimental accident curses him with the tendency to become a powerful giant green brute under emotional stress!" Can you believe that you just read this description of a $40 million dollar movie? I had the unfortunate experience of recently having to sit through this exhaustive time-waster called "Hulk".

(And believe it or not this tripe was directed by ANG LEE the guy who went on to direct "Brokeback Mountain", a sensitive modern day drama. )

This piece of junk was produced by Universal Pictures in association with Marvel Comics in 2003. The movie flopped badly. But listen....the executives feel they should try to please the small group of fans who buy comic books nowadays so hey! They are spending $40 million more to make the very same movie over again!!! Logic? Noooooooo! Marvel Comics deserve to be on the shelves so that they can be read. Oh, sorry, wait a minute...nobody reads anymore, right?
