Movies By David Lynch - Surreal, Amazing or Just Plain Weird?
When you watch a David Lynch movie, you step into another world. A world of strange images, unexplainable events and bizarre sounds. They transport you out of ordinary life into a parallel universe where who knows what will happen? What's not to love?
Although he has directed more than 30 movies, I'm picking my top 5 to share with you. Come take my hand...we're going on a little trip...behind the red curtain...
Contents at a Glance
#1: Blue Velvet (1986)
"The candy-colored clown they call the Sandman..."
Blue Velvet is a mystery thriller with strong surrealist and film noir overtones. To sum up the story, a young man played by Kyle MacLachlan who seems to be living in a perfect suburban neighbourhood discovers a severed ear in a field.
This grisly discovery sets him off on a journey into a dark underworld where he becomes involved with a strange and beautiful woman (isabella Rosselini). Unfortunately, she is connected to a violent and evil man named Frank, unforgettably played by the late great Dennis Hopper. If you have ever seen this movie, you will remember this crazy character very well!

#2: Mullholland Dr. (2001)
"No hay banda! There is no band. It is all an illusion... "
Mullholland Dr. is the story of Betty (Naomi Watts), a wide-eyed naive girl who arrives in Hollywood to begin her acting career and in the process meets Rita, a beautiful woman suffering from amnesia after a car accident..or is it? Mullholland Dr. is like a dream within a dream, or perhaps several dreams within each other. It's hard to say what is truly real, but perhaps that doesn't matter...
This movie takes you on an adventure then picks you up and transports you to another completely different world where nothing, yet everything, makes sense.
It's hard to explain...just watch and let Lynch take you on this amazing journey!

#3 Lost Highway (1997)
"We've met before, haven't we...?"
Again, this movie has the surreal dream-like quality that is a constant theme throughout Lynch's movie. After meeting a strange man at a party, a jazz saxophone player named Fred (Bill Pullman) is accused of murdering his wife and is eventually found guilty and sentenced to death by electric chair.
While on death row, he inexplicably morphs into a mechanic called Pete (Balthazar Getty) and is released from prison. Somehow Fred and Pete's paths keep crossing thanks to the activities of the shady gangster Dick Laurent. What follows is a suspenseful web of intrigue as we are led into the sinister underworld of these characters.

#4: Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me (1992)
"You always hurt the ones you love..."
After the success of the TV mini series Twin Peaks, it seemed only right to make a full length movie. And what a movie! Although essentially a prequel for the first half an hour, the movie then takes us to the events in the last week leading up to the death of Laura Palmer, a rebellious and troubled teenager caught in a love triangle with two men while struggling with a drug addiction. She also has a mysterious relationship with her father, the possibly schizophrenic Leland/BOB.
Strange images, inexplicable characters and happenings...this is classic Lynch and will haunt you for a long time afterwards!

#5: Wild At Heart (1990)
"This whole world is wild at heart and crazy on top..."
In this sensual and violent 1990 classic, Nicholas cage plays Sailor Ripley, a young man recently released from jail and on probation. He immediately hooks up again with his lover Lulu played by Laura Dern and they set off on a journey into the deep south.
However, Lulu's psychopathic mother hates Sailor with a passion, and she sends a variety of murderous and strange characters after the pair, who on their journey also find out strange things about one another.
Violent, humorous and darkly erotic, this is one road movie you'll never forget!

- Yes, I like David Lynch very much. I watched the "Twin Peaks" series for awhile. It started to get a little too weird toward the end. Great picks here. I do miss Dennis Hopper.
