Movies named after songs!
It's been a trend for quite a while now. Want your movie title to somehow already be at the top of someone's head? Name it after an iconic song. Then use that song in the commercials for even more exposure. The most common genre is the romantic comedy but movies of all types have been named for songs. This list is going to explore the most well known song title movies.
This guide is all about movies named for already existing songs so I am not including movies where the songs came out after the movie or along with the movie.

The most famous movies named for songs
You've probably heard of these
Pretty Woman
This one has got to come in at number one. Why, Oh I don't know, lets see if there is a TV in the room where you are at then tune in to either TNT or Oxygen because one of those channels is showing Pretty Woman right now. If you are not in America turn to your version of TNT or Oxygen and check. (No I don't know what the equivalent is maybe BBC 8 the Ocho?) Anyway Pretty Woman made pretty much everyone in the world want to go shopping on Rodeo drive with someone else's credit card, while conveniently telling off those snotty commission only salesgirls all while listening to one of the biggest hits of 1964. (I would call it the biggest hit but back then there was some pesky British Band called the Beatles stealing everybody else's thunder)
Plus the movie Pretty Woman made the whole world collectively forget that the song is actually named Oh Pretty Woman. It is I swear go look it up. Don't worry I didn't know either until I did a little research. It's really called Oh, Pretty Woman, unless wikipedia is punking me. Wouldn't be the first time.
Stand By Me
The second most famous of the movies named for songs is a classic. Pretty much everyone loves this movie. Did you know the original short story was called The Body? No offense to Mr. King but would you have rushed out to see it if it was called The Body? Me neither. Thank goodness they changed the name to something that sounded less like a bad zombie movie and more like a classic featuring a heavyset Jerry O'Connell and a nostalgia heavy soundtrack.
Sixteen Candles
I don't really remember the song actually being in the movie (thank goodness actually) but the movie is a total classic so it goes here right along with...
Pretty in Pink
Yes Pretty in Pink is named after the song. Not a lot of people know this because the Psychedelic Furs did a remake of the song just for the soundtrack. Anyway another classic but what was the deal with the hideous home made prom dress at the end? I thought Andie was supposed to have sewing talent. Oh and who else totally wants to go to Chicago circa 1986 and visit Trax the record store?
Sweet Home Alabama
This movie has nothing to do with the song other than being set in Alabama, but it is still one of the most well known movies named for one of the most well known songs. Plus the song sweet home Alabama is pretty much bubbling up in a part of everyone's brain waiting for them to consume a bit of alcohol so it can become free in the form of lousy karaoke. Even if you have never been anywhere near Alabama, Sweet Home Alabama is living inside your head. It's filed somewhere near Margaritaville, Brown Eyed Girl, You've Lost that Lovin Feelin, The Gambler and Oh, Pretty Woman.
American Pie
What the movie has to do with driving one's Chevy to a Levy I am not really sure. Maybe if there is an apple pie with you it would make sense.
My Girl
I remember that a lot of people went to see this because Maculay Culkin's character died in it and there was a backlash against him. It turned out to be a cute sweet nostalgia movie, and as far as the backlash looking back Macualy Culkin was not 1/100th as annoying as Justin Beiber or The Jonas Brothers or Miley Cyrus. So Mr. Culkin the world owes you an apology plus you were pretty good in Scott Pilgrim.

Movies about the Singers of the Songs they are named for.
That was a mouthful.
Walk The LineThe Johnny Cash Bio-pic. This is a good movie. Another good one you may not have seen is Walk Hard but it's not named after a song that came out earlier so it didn't make the list, but go rent it anyway and watch the extended version if you are old enough.
What's love Got to do with it
The Bio-pic all about Tina and Ike's tortured relationship. Man I haven't seen this in ages. I should totally watch it again.
Beyond the Sea
Kevin Spacey starred as Bobby Darrin even though he was older than Bobby Darin was when he died. It's not a very good movie but every time it's on TV I sort of get sucked into watching the whole thing. I don't know why. Maybe it's because I like the song Beyond the Sea. Mack the Knife is alright but I could never quite understand what the lyrics were about. Splish Splash is OK, but it always sounded like a song for kids.
La Bamba
The Bio-pic about Ritchie Valens. I haven't seen in ages so I haven't got much to add but I do remember the Los Lobos cover of La Bamba being on the radio a lot after this came out.
Great balls of Fire
A Pretty Cheesy Jerry Lee Lewis Movie starring Dennis Quaid.
De-Lovely
The Cole Porter movie. I haven't seen this yet so I haven't much to add.

More Movies named for Songs
Take Me Home Tonight
The newest Song To Movie is called Take Me Home tonight and features the song that has been stuck inside your head on and off since circa 1987. Will it be a classic or Fall along the lines of many a forgotten bad romantic comedy starring one of the Olsen Twins or Miley Cyrus? Who knows one thing I do know is that that song is kind of secretly awesome no forget that the song is awesome straight up. Hey Eddie Money when you played the county fair a couple of years ago, I was singing every word. Just like Ronnie said.
Love Potion Number Nine
Not only did this movie take its name from a song but it also took it's plot from the song. Its starred Sandra Bullock and no one heard of it until she got famous from While You Were Sleeping and Speed then they put it in all the video stores so people with not so discriminating tastes would rent it. My friends were those people so we totally rented it.
Lean on Me
One of those inspirational teacher movies. I am still waiting for my inspiring teacher to come. Maybe he will get me to stop making websites nobody ever visits and teach how to do bookkeeping.
American Beauty
This is named for a Grateful Dead song. Should I admit that the only Greatful dead song I know is Touch of Grey?
Calander Girl
This was the super guilty pleasure movie you went to see because It had Jason Preistley in it from 90210 and he is so dreamy and his sideburns are so perfect and during his fake death scene in the theatre some girl started crying out loud because Jason Priestley was so dreamy and his sideburns were so perfect. Oh wait that was my theatrical experience and no I was not the crying girl. I only would have cried if it was Luke Perry. The plot of the movie was that Jason and his friends were kind of stalking Marilyn Monroe and in one scene they tried to impress her with a live cow they had purchased and wait how is it that I remember this entire stupid movie by heart.
Calander Girls
This was that movie about Helen Mirren being in a calendar for charity. I haven't seen it yet because 1. it sounds exactly like the plot of The Full Monty and B. It doesn't have Jason Priestley in it. Oh and did I forget to mention that in the other Calendar Girl movie you get a glimpse of his booty?
Can't Buy Me Love
80s movie that inspired a remake also named for a song called...
Love don't cost a thing
Didn't see this one and I don't really remember Can't Buy Me Love. Though its really surprising more songs are not named for Beatles songs.
My Blue Heaven
This is a really funny 80s Steve Martin movie that kind of flopped but is really funny. Go rent it and eat some arugala. It's a veg-e-table.
Mamma Mia
This was the musical Abba movie that was not called Muriel's wedding. How come more Abba songs are not movies yet? I am totally waiting for the Fernando movie.
Boogie Nights
A good movie about a nasty subject
Man on the Moon
This was the Andy Kaufman movie that told me and the rest of the world that there was in fact a person named Andy Kaufman and he was a comedian. Before that everyone thought he was just somebody REM made up.
Roxanne
I don't really think this is named for the Police song its based on Cyrano de Bergerac. In fact I don't even know why I am adding it to this list.
My Boyfriends Back
I am embarrassed that I have actually seen this one. Wasn't in a theatre at least. I hope it was on TV. I hope I didn't pay to rent it.
Blue Velvet
Weird cult-y 80s David Lynch movie that probably makes no sense plot-wise. I am curious about this movie but it never seems to be playing on TV.
Detriot Rock City
I never saw this KISS movie but somewhere I have really cool 2 sided movie poster for it. This poster would be so perfect for a 70s era Midwestern basement rec room.
It Takes Two and New York Minute
Both of these star one or both of the Olsen Twins. All I can say is that I feel sorry for the singers and writers of these songs. Some singers get a still unknown Julia Roberts and some get the Olsen Twins. Tough Break.
Only the Lonely
John Candy romantic movie from the 80s. I vaguely remember this one.
Running Scared
I don't know if this is named for the song or just the expression but I know it's a real movie from the 80s because I keep seeing it in the TV listings. I would watch but it sounds like a cheesy action 80s movie I am never in the mood for.
In Dreams
Some Annette Benning movie I don't remember coming out at all. Anyone else notice that Roy Orbison seems to have the most movies named for his songs? Not only that but also the best restaurant at Disneyland. I am talking about the Blue Bayou since I lack a club 33 membership and Monte Cristo sandwiches are the bomb. Oh Blue Bayou it seems like its been ages but I'm going back one day come what may, and I am going to wear my prescription sunglasses inside.
Morning Glory
This is a 2011 movie with Harrison Ford in it about a morning news show. Apparently this is named after a song, though I don't know the song. I only know the Oasis album What's The Story Morning Glory. It's a good cd you should check it out for a nice slice of 90's nostalgia.

Even More Movies named for Songs
and the hits just keep on coming!
Peggy Sue Got Married
I remember this came out around the time Back to the Future did and I was obsessed with time travel and the 50's so I saw it and yeah maybe it's cause I was 10 but this movie was so nowhere as good as Back to the Future. Though I did like the part where she told her teacher algebra had no use.
Message in A Bottle and The Mighty Quinn
The Internet says these 2 are movies. Ok Internet I believe you.
Rock Around the Clock
Thought it was just a song but apparently also a movie not called Rebel without a Cause.
One Fine day
I think this was some George Clooney romantic comedy I probably saw back in the day. Clearly it made a lasting impression.
Running on Empty
This drama starred River Phoenix. Rest in Peace River.
Take this Job and Shove it.
I remember this song and I remember a memorable karaoke session involving a friend wanting the world to know that she took that job and in fact shoved it but I didn't know it inspired a movie. What I want to know is did another song from that era also inspire a convoy? Coming June 2011 Convoy. He's got a great big con-voyyyyyy.
Valley Girl and Girls Just Want to have Fun
I like so totally get these to confused. Which one had Sarah Jessica Parker and the dance Contest and which one had Nicolas cage or was all just one movie and isn't that Jim Carrey over there no wait that's Earth Girls are Easy.
Less than Zero
All I remember is that this took place in lots of totally 80s LA malls and Robert Downey Jr. was a junkie who overdosed. At the time this role must have been a stretch. Also it features the Bangles song Hazy Shade of Winter. That was a good song quit being such a hater. The Bangles deserve your respect.
Simply Irresistible
Sarah Michelle Geller as a witch who casts a love spell on herself or something I think. I don't know for sure though maybe it's a remake of love potion number 9.
Addicted to Love
I think maybe I remember there being a movie named this I just don't remember anything about the actual movie.
Satisfaction
Justine Bateman has a rock band in this 80's movie. I remember the commercials for it.
Dazed and Confused
This is a great movie, but I didn't even know there was a song called Dazed and Confused.
Only You
This was the one about Marissa Tomei being someone who would only fall in love if it was fate so she went to a lot of carnival psychics. I forgot about this movie but now that my memory has been jogged I remember it being pretty cute.
Season of the Witch
Must be the season of the bomb. This 2011 movie looked too much like that wicker man movie I never bothered to see either.
Chances Are
This is the one where Cybil Shepard is pining for her dead husband who has been re-incarnated as Robert Downey Jr. The premise sounds kind of icky but it's a cute movie.
Just Like Heaven
I bought this book at the dollar store once called If only It were True then a year later just Like Heaven came out and it sounded very familiar. It turns out they based this movie on that book and renamed it for the song that pretty much everyone loves. Even most non Cure fans.

I am not sure which came first the song or the movie.
The movies that may or may not have been named for songs.
Purple Rain, 9 to 5, Every Elvis Movie, Most of the Beatle movies, Who's That Girl, Car Wash, Every tap dancing musical of the 40s 50s and 60s, That depressing Leaving Las Vegas alcoholism movie, and White Christmas.
Now that they are stuck in your head...
