Great Witchcraft Movies For All Ages

Here you will find a list of some of the best movies with witches ever made. As we progress through time, the idea of witchcraft and witches is becoming more and more accepted - and even popular in many circles. Witches now are no longer the feared creatures of the dark that can put a hex on you to last you a lifetime.

These days witches are mostly associated with either Wicca, a very easy and acceptable religion that is only interested in good, white magic, or the witches in movies like Harry Potter, full of fun, ready to entertain us for an hour or two. Either way the idea of a witch no longer makes us cringe. In fact there are lots of people looking for movies about witches.

Note: Here I will feature movies with both female and male witches. While some people think that male witches are called warlocks, they are in fact called witches as well. The term 'warlock' has as origin a rather negative meaning of traitor and oathbreaker, so men practicing witchcraft prefer the name 'male witches' instead.

Movies You Can Watch With Your Kids

Teen Witch

teen witch

Teen Witch a sweet romantic movie that everyone with a heart for romance will love. It is about a teenager girl who receives her witchy powers at the age of 16. This makes her not only extremely popular in the school, but also gives her other social advantages, such as getting the boy of her dreams and allowing her to do pretty much anything she wants. I mean which teenage girl doesn't dream of having all these in her life?

Without revealing the plot, if you haven't seen it yet, it's worth getting the DVD for your collection of movies with witches. You won't regret it.

The Good Witch

the good witch

The Good Witch is another great movie that the entire family can watch. The story is about Cassie, a good witch (or so the townsfolk say) who comes to town and opens a New Age shop called Bell, Book & Candle. Children are all enthralled and drawn to this magical place where candles and other paraphernalia is sold. I won't reveal the plot, but let me tell you it's absolutely charming. Kids will love this one!

If you want a movie that the entire family can watch uncensored, this is the best one to keep busy for the next two hours.

The Worst Witch

the worst witch

Here is another charming movie with witches that kids can watch as well. The movie was made from Jill Murphy's book (worth reading) and it's one that reminds you of all the good things you had and were as a child. Now this movie is not the high quality one we're spoiled with these days, but it's still one worth watching simply because it's so entertaining.

If you've been a child of the 80s, this movie is for you. It will bring forth all the nostalgia of good times gone by, one that you will have fun watching it with your kids or grandkids who haven't seen it yet.

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone

Harry Potter and the sorcerer's stone

No witchy movie collection would be complete without the Harry Potter series. Especially the first movie can be watched with the entire family. As Harry Potter grows and the new movies in the series come out, the plot becomes a bit stronger as well. Nevertheless, as all movies in this series are rated PG, they can be watched by all kids in the family under parental supervision.

I won't go into details on what the movie is about. Let's just say that it is one that has already become classic and has set a new standard in movies with witches. Based on the same name books by J. K. Rowlings, the movies bring to life the characters of Harry Potter and his dearest friends along with Hogwarts, the school where every magic happens.

The Witches (Roald Dahl's Book Adaptation)

the witches

Here is a great movie that can be watched by everyone (rating is PG). It is an adventure fantasy from the 199s which is adapted from adapted from Roald Dahl's book. The movie is scary, funny, and extremely entertaining at the same time. While it might not be for toddlers and really small kids, I think pre-teens and teens will enjoy this one immensely.

It does have a few rather scary scenes, but compared to what is shown these days on TV and DVD, I find this movie quite harmless.

Practical Magic

practical magic

Practical Magic is a move that has in fact similarities with some Wiccan practices of today..It can be safely watched by pre-teens and teens who are interested in the idea of witchcraft.

Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman bring a sparkling screen magic to Practical Magic, adapted from Alice Hoffman's bestseller. They play Sally and Gillian Owens, sisters hexed by a centuries -old curse...and coping with a witches brew of events involving a possible love match, a zombie and a need to resume the age-old witchcraft taught by two doting Owens aunts. It's quite an entertaining movie, and if you haven't read the book, I highly recommend it as well.

The Witches of Eastwick

the witches of eastwick

This is one of the fun movies I remember from the first time I saw it many years ago. With great actors like Cher, Jack Nicholson, Susan Sarandon, and Michelle Pfeiffer, this movie has to be great. It is based on the novel by John Updike and it's a great comedy/horror movie that will give you a giggle and a fright at the same time.

It can be watched by children, however it does have a few scary moments. This is why it is rated "R", meaning can be watched by kids if the parents allow it to them.

The acting is great, the plot is engaging and the entire atmosphere is worth enjoying, whether you're watching the movie for Halloween or any other time in the year.

The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, Witch and the Wardrobe

The Lion, Witch and the Wardrobe

The first movie in the Chronicles of Narnia series has a bad witch, one that is played really well by Tilda Swinton. The entire movie series is adapted from the Chronicles Of Narnia by C.S. Lewis, one that I think every kid should read it at some point or another.

I can't recommend this movie (and the entire series) enough, it is really good and it has a great lesson to teach us all. The lesson? Watch the movie to find out!

Bell, Book and Candle

bell, book and candle

A lovely old movie that will be entertaining for the entire family.

"Bell, Book and Candle" is a charming romantic comedy that is interesting from several viewpoints. It is an interesting artifact of sophisticated New York, and the highly idealized way New York society appeared to be in the 1950's. The treatment of witches is somewhat different from other portrayals, where witches are often old hags bent over a cauldron in a smelly cave or broken-down hovel. The hip Zodiac Club had avant-garde music with a strong beatnik flavor. Few movies captured the essence of the beatnik style, with this movie being one of them. Jack Kerouac could easily have been in the audience.

Hocus Pocus

hocus pocus

Another charming comedy that you can watch with your kids on a quiet weekend evening. The movie is played by Bette Midler, Kathy Najimy, and Sarah Jessica Parker, who play 3 resurrected witches who wreak havoc on Salem, Massachusetts, 300 hundred years after they were hung.

Personally I like watching it during the Halloween time, but if you're a person who loves watching a movie over and over again, this one will fit the bill entirely. Really funny, full of magic, music and laughter, a sure entertainer!

Death Becomes Her

death becomes her

I remember this movie fondly from the first time I've seen it. I've always loved Meryl Streep, and with two other great actors like Bruce Willis and Goldie Hawn, it has already become a classic.

The movie is in fact a black comedy, a satire that depicts America's obsession with youth and vanity. The witches are fun and while sometimes you cringe your eyes at some of the scenes, overall is a great movie to watch for the entire family. Note: it is officially rated PG-13.

Stardust

Stardust

The movie Stardust is based on Neil Gaiman's fantasy graphic fable. Set in an alternate universe, the plot starts in the 19th century England. The move is full of magic, love, sparkle, flying pirates and of course witchcraft. Rate PG-13, it is advised that children under the age of 13 should not watch it unless it's expressly allowed by parents.

Horror Movies

Witchboard

Witchboard

Who hasn't secretly wanted to play with the Ouija board to summon a creature or talk with the dead spirits? This is exactly the premise of this older horror movie. The movie opens with a scene of a party, where someone suggests playing with a Ouija board. Not surprisingly, a spirit is contacted, and strange things began to happen. Possessions by evil spirits are just some of the bad things that the movie has in store for us.

It is a great little horror movie, by no means gory and meaty as the contemporary horrors, but still one that small kids should not watch.

Simon, King of the Witches

simon king of witches

Simon, King of Witches is labeled a horror movie, however it's not really as gory as the real horror films of today are made. It's really more of a satire than anything else. It is loosely based on the persona of Poke Runyon, an occult author and ceremonial magic practitioner, so if you want to see some glimpses of how ceremonial magic works and you're interested in the occult overall, you will love this movie.

Mark of the Witch/Brides Wore Blood

Mark of the Witch/Brides Wore Blood

This DVD has actually 2 movies in one. Both are about witches and both are included in the horror genre. It's total psychedelic madness as college students toy recklessly with the occult and ressurect an ancient crone bearing the MARK OF THE WITCH; soon she's back in the swing of things by inhabiting the body of a hot young co-ed and uses her womanly wiles to torment the descendents of her tormentors (and their pets).

Tales from the Darkside: The Movie

Tales from the Darkside

The movie is in fact a collection of 3 stories based on writings by famous writers such as Stephen King, Arthur Conan Doyle and George A. Romero. it is about a deadly wicked Witch who is planning on cooking a little boy, but while she's preparing for the dinner, the boy reads her three horror stories. In a way you are reminded by the 1001 nights (Arabian Nights) where Scheherazade was keeping herself alive by telling enchanting stories every night, thus delaying her demise.

Movies About Witch Trials

Salem Witch Trials

salem witch trials

If you've been interested in the history of witchcraft and the Salem witch trials, then this movie will be interesting to watch. Of course the fact that great actors such as Kirstie Alley, Rebecca De Mornay, Shirley MacLaine and Peter Ustinov play in it makes it even more fascinating.

The Salem witch trials have been a black spot in the history of America. During those times witch burnings at stake and unfair trials have been going on throughout Europe as well. This movie shows the gruesome face of friends and neighbors during those bad times. For those accused of witchcraft by their neighbors and friends, there was little chance of clearing their names; the mass paranoia that ravaged through the community took the lives of 19 innocent men and women. Definitely a worth watching movie!

The Crucible

The Crucible

The Crucible is a movie about the Salem witch trials. The Salem witch hunts are given a new and nasty perspective when a vengeful teenage girl uses superstition and repression to her advantage, creating a killing machine that becomes a force unto itself.

The movie is based on Arthur Miller's play. Its inevitable ending won't satisfy those who want only fluff and feathers at the cinema, but the hard lesson won by those who refuse to compromise their principles can't be denied. The Crucible is a faithful testament to their sacrifice.
