Movie to Watch......

Movies to make you think
- Reign Over Me: This is the first movie that has hit me right in the guts for years. I have only seen it once but will be there waiting for it's DVD release in Australia. Adam Sandler and Don Cheadle are outstanding in this story of a man who loses his family...and subsequently everything else as a result of September 11.
- Dead Man Walking: Based on a true story the classic performances by Sean Penn and Susan Sarandon will make anyone assess their view on the death penalty
- Dead Poets Society: This classic film was released when I was 15, it blew me away, I wanted a teacher like Mr Keating (didn't everyone?). I wanted to be a teacher like Mr Keating (what teacher doesn't). The essence of being true to yourself and standing up for yourself can apply at any age. 17 years later I am just beginning to "Seize The Day".
- Before Sunrise: I know of people who "didn't get" why I raved about this film. It is such a simple concept, one night, strange city and conversations that we have all had. This film blew me away so much that I walked out of the cinema one night and was there for the first showing the next day. I then proceeded to drag everyone I knew to see it with me, just so I had an excuse to go again. It taught me that the places we go are nothing without the people that we are with.
- Mr Hollands Opus. Another "inspirational teacher" movie. This story of a man just doing his job and living day by day reminds us all that when you get to the end and look back there are a lot of things that seem insignificant along the way but add together to make a huge life.
- American History X. This really did kick me in the guts. There are a whole load of levels on which this film works so well, yes it has violence and deals with unsavoury topics but it is well done and fantastically acted. After seeing this you have to face the sort of community or world that you want to pass on to your children.

Good for a Giggle
- Meet the Parents and Meet the Fockers. You really can't have one of these films without the other. There are things that will make you cringe but will always get a laugh. Ben Stiller seems to manage the "silly" comedy with ease though it is the nature of the entire ensemble that really makes this so funny.
- Rat Race. The modern version of "It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World" (which could also be on the list) manages to reintroduce some of the elements of old fashioned slapstick comedy. Again this has a huge cast who all conribute to the humor as they race across the country in search of a fortune.
- The Wannabes. Here is a very funny (and again, very silly) Australian film about a group of thieves who pretend to be children's entertainers.
- Bridget Jones's Diary. For all those real girls out there. The reason that this film is so funny is that we have all been there!
- Hitch. This could be put in the category of Chick Flicks but there is a lot more to it. Will Smith is the date doctor who helps those guys who are luckless in love. The real comedy comes from those cast around him, in particular the scene where Albert is learning to dance.
- Talladega Nights. There are a number of Will Ferrell movies that could easily be on this list. Talledega Nights is the Story of Ricky Bobby a Nascar driver who hits rock bottom and works his way back up.....done of course in the silliest way possible!
- Ferris Buller's Day Off. Well what can I say, this movie is any 13 year old's dream. When I saw it I thought that Ferris was the coolest guy ever to walk the earth. I recently relived my childhood with a repeat performance of this film.....at 32, I still think that Ferris is the coolest guy ever to walk the earth!

Quirky Movies
- Little Miss Sunshine: A watch over and over movie about everyone's dysfunctional family that no matter what is always there for each other. It has a great cast but no "star". The perfect quirky film.
