Moving House Checklist: 6-week Countdown!

Get a confirmation date! We can't countdown to Moving Day until we know this!

If you are currently renting a property, inform your landlord of the moving date.

Be sure to study your home insurance. Your cover should begin from the day you arrive at your new address.

Approach at least 3 removal companies for written quotations: my lens with further tips can be found at Squidoo.com/Removal-Companies. If you're not using professionals, then it is never to early to start asking your friends for assistance!

Notify any relevant services and utility companies of your move. I have produced a lens with another (helpful!) list here.

Consider how much space your stuff currently takes up - it may be necessary to arrange for extra storage.

Think about what else could make moving simpler, use this experience as a chance to clean out possessions that you no longer want or need.

You may want to start at your next home with new carpets, curtains or furniture. If this is the case, armed with your moving date, you can now arrange for delivery to your new address.

Start putting your non-essentials, such as books, spare clothes, that stuff at the back of the wardrobe, into boxes ready for the movers. Day-by-day you should consider how you could be de-cluttering as you go.

If you are moving to a new area, you may have to de-register from your current doctor or dentist.

No amount of preparation and planning is 100% foolproof: visit the post office to arrange for the forwarding of mail, or you'll never know if you won the lottery yet!

If appropriate, let your local newsagent/milkman when you will be moving, so that you can confirm a cut-off date.

Use your email service to send out new address details to your contacts.

Contact your removal firm: doublecheck the arrival time for the day, ensure they have directions for the new home.

Contact your estate agent to confirm a time to collect your new set of keys.

Notify your bank/building society of any changes to direct debits or standing orders.
