Getting to know Charlotte and Mecklenburg County, North Carolina
Charlotte, North Carolina is located in Mecklenburg County, and is the largest city in the State. Named for Queen Charlotte Sofia of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, Germany, Charlotte is known as "The Queen City."
Settled in the mid-18th Century, Charlotte became incorporated in 1768 and was established as the county seat in 1774. At the turn of the 19th Century, Charlotte was the center for gold production for the entire country, and a branch of the US Mint was in operation there from 1837 until 1913.
Well-established as a trading center and merchant crossroads by the mid-19th Century, Charlotte held importance to the Confederacy during the War Between the States. In fact, the last meeting of the Confederate Cabinet under Jefferson Davis was held in Charlotte.
A leading banking center, Charlotte is home to many national, as well as international corporations. Home to NASCAR, Charlotte Douglas International Airport is also USAirways' major hub.
The University of North Carolina at Charlotte is located in the NE section of the city, and professional sports include the Carolina Panthers and the Bobcats. Lowe's Motor Speedway is located north of the city.
A landscape of rolling hills, beautiful mature trees and picturesque lakes makes up the inviting Piedmont foothills, where Charlotte is located, near the South Carolina border. With easy access to both the mountains and the coast, Charlotte is an ideal place to call home.
