Alternate Energy Still Requires Electrons to Move--How You Move 'em Depends on YOU!
Let's eliminate Oil Dependency! With Oil now Passing $100 a barrel, it's Time to Kick Butts and Find Alternate Ways to Provide for our Energy Needs!
BKSJYJHDAYDUOkay, so the price dropped a bit. Big deal. You can probably guarantee that the price will inevitably go back up again. So, it's best to prepare!
Drive across the American Southwest and you'll certainly see the old-style windmills positioned next to water-tanks to keep cattle and other livestock supplied with their pumped water. Most rural areas in the U.S. have them as well. With concerns about environmental pollution from fossil fuels and the climate change and global warming issue, alternate methods of providing electrical energy are now being explored.
Now, in California at least, you can find windmill farms--one near the east side of the Tehachapi Pass in Southern California as you leave Barstow heading for the Central Valley and another on the Altamont Hills next to Interstate 580 between the Central Valley (Sacramento - Modesto Corridor) and Silicon Valley and San Francisco. These windmills serve a different purpose--instead of pumping water directly, they are "pumping electrons"; turning in a magnetic coil to move electrons to produce electricity for the growing businesses and population of California. The electricity that these windmills produce is routed into the electrical grid for much of the country. You might be looking at the result of one of those moved electrons even now.
Energy (and the lack thereof) has always fascinated me. So, this Squidoo lens is an attempt to help make some sense of the whole deal. I'll be working on the lens to make it a resource for those of you who are interested in not only getting the U.S. weaned off of the non-renewable energy sources such as oil and coal, and getting us more established with more environmentally-friendly sources such as hydropower, wind power, geothermal power, and solar power.

Going Nuclear? The Sun Might be Your Answer!
Why?
Because solar energy depends on nuclear power!
Solar energy's nuclear power plant is the hydrogen fusion of the Sun.
Even though the Sun is 93 million miles away, Earth is still close enough to receive more solar energy in one hour than the world uses in a whole year. However, cumulative global solar energy production accounts for less than 0.01% of the total global primary energy demand.
Not only that, but windpower depends on solar power as well. Solar energy, along with the Earth's rotation, is what causes the breezes and wind currents.

Municipal Street Lights Use Solar Power--Save City Thousands of Dollars in Energy Costs
Get Your Independence from Oil!
We already know that oil is a limited resource. We know that WE are not in control of the main sources of oil--and thus, we are at the mercy of the oil producers.
Over the past few years, we've seen oil prices more than double. The car manufacturers are not helping matters much--they are still foisting gas-guzzling autos on us with only a limited few selections of hybrid or all-electric cars.
Well--there's not much we can do in this area--other than choose to use public transportation more. Or, better--working from home and "telecommuting" if necessary.
Recent developments in new technologies enable you to purchase economical solar photovoltaic panels--panels that can more than pay for themselves after an initial period of use. Along with the solar panels, you must get the accompanying equipment.
Click here for Solar Energy Products and Accessories!
Although you can learn how to do your whole installation yourself from many of the books and references available, it's best that you consult with architectural and engineering specialists to ensure that your installation conforms to building codes and the regulatory agencies.
Additionally, you can install solar water heaters--those that heat water for your bathing and washing needs. These water heaters can also heat the water for your swimming pool or spa.
Then, for more energy independence, you can get parabolic solar cookers (many different designs are available) and solar ovens (again, many designs available).

Do you have the energy to look through some links? Here they are!
I'm learning that my links save a lot of my energy (in a funny sort of way!)
- Solar Energy and Solar Physics Projects for Kids (and Teachers, of course!)
- Put together by the University of Montana Solar Physics Group... this lens has a lot of projects for kids to learn more about solar energy and solar physics. More of an astronomy slant rather than an "alternate energy" slant, but still relevant!
- Energy Seeds
- This cool website has a lot of pictures and articles on alternate energy projects going on all over the country. Particularly interesting are the links on the right side ("The Archives").
- Native Energy!
- This website discusses wind, solar, bio-gas, and natural gas as alternatives to our addiction to petroleum.
- A Justification Treatise on Farm Waste/Animal Excrement Methane Digesters!
- This website provides a convincing argument for our government to stop catering to the "big power" companies and to start considering bio-gas and bio-waste as alternative fuel sources for energy production. Hey, like the treatise says--"Animals produce poop 24/7 even when the sun's not out, the wind isn't blowing, and it's not raining." Such a deal!
- Methane Gas Production from Animal Waste
- This article expands on the fact that the United States' dairy, swine, and beef farms could produce more than 340 million BTUs of gas a year. That's enough to replace about 2.5 billion gallons of heating oil, or about 20 percent of U.S. heating oil consumption. (Not to mention, powering a whole lot of natural gas vehicles!)
- Portugal's New Solar Photovoltaic Farm in the News
- Portugal is cranking up the world's largest solar photovoltaic farm that generates electricity straight from sunlight near Moura, on the Alentejo plain in eastern Portugal. This area has the most sunshine per square meter a year in Europe.
- Solar Powered Car... Solar1
- This news item describes and provides photos of the car with the license plate: SOLAR1 ...
Imagine a car that NEVER has to go to a gas station! A car that, while sitting in the parking lot all day, is POWERING UP! Totally cool! And yes, in a pinch, it *does* come with an extension cord! - Power Your Home with Solar or Wind Power!
- This website has a lot of great information and resources. Kits for Solar or Wind power generation, educational seminars and books, and all sorts of support information. Check it out!
- SolarArray Blog
- This blog provides all sorts of information (video clips, narrative, and resource links) on how solar energy is used to heat homes, cook food, and provide other heating. Check this blog out for a different view on solar energy!
