Inspiration in One Little Word - Moxie!

Have you heard of the word Moxie or know what it means? I hadn't heard of it until a couple months ago when MGA Entertainment launched a new fashion doll collection named: Moxie Girlz. The positive message, or motto, that went with these new dolls is what got me interested in them.

The Moxie Girlz motto is, "Be true! Be you!" along with "Every girl has the strength to do something amazing! Anything is possible as long as you stay true to yourself and never give up on your dreams!"

What mother wouldn't like this? This was something we all would want for our little princesses! Who wouldn't want their little girl to grow up to be strong, independent, and creative?

This was something I could identify with! After all, this mom was a little girl once too! :)

Have You Ever Heard of the Word MOXIE?

What did you think moxie stands for?

Loading Fetching blurbs now... please stand by

It's a fizzy drink, right?

prosperity66 says:

Hm... Isn't there anything more conformist than to be different and assert it? Little girls would conform themselves to the Moxie Girl's rules. This is still conformism. I believe that one doesn't need to conform oneself to a trend if one doesn't want to be conformist.

Positive attitude, determination, persistance, etc.

ShirlW says:

I always interrupted it to mean - sassy, assertive and the guts to do your own thing and to heck with everyone else. It is kind of an old fashioned word, but cool old fashioned, not fuddy-duddy old fashioned.

AddaptAbilities says:

"Moxie" reminds me of the hard-working lady reporter in 1930's movies -- the one who's uncovered the shady dealings of the local bank owner and the crooked politician.

Mahogany says:

It's been ages, but yes, I've heard the word. Always identified it with something similar to "gutsy" but, now that you mention it, always related it to a female context - like an Amelia Earhart sorta character.

KathyMcGraw says:

Yes, many times and my co-worker told me she liked how I work because I have "Moxie" although at the time I wasn't sure what she meant until I asked her :)

Origin of the word Moxie...

... where moxie comes from?

Gentian - Flower Children Blank Notecard cardQuestion in a duel above is a bit tricky, wouldn't you agree? :) Well, moxie stands for both! Moxie is a name of the soft drink, which was pretty popular almost a century ago - production started in 1920s and it became popular fizzy drink made with gentian root.

This drink perpetuated its vigorous connotations in such a successful way that by the 1930s term moxie acquired completely new life independent of this beverage. It had become a slang synonym for strength, energy, courage, and mental sharpness combined.

Modern Definition of the Word Moxie...

... almost a century later, word moxie is again popular...

Moxie Definition card cardFrom freedictionary.com:
Moxie is a noun with a meaning
1. The ability to face difficulty with spirit and courage.
2. Aggressive energy; initiative.
3. Skill; know-how.

Another interpretation from Urban Dictonary.com:
Having moxie means having enough cleverness, skill, creativity, fortitude and cajones to solve (or, at least, to get out of) a difficult and personally threatening situation.

Originally a Yiddish word, popularized by Moxie soda and the Kingdom of Loathing. The caffienated soda tried to add 'vigor and energy' to the idea of moxie; and KoL invented the adjective (moxious), and made 'moxie' also imply stylishness, accordion skills, and the ability to mix really good drinks.

(Having moxie doesn't always imply that you're the tricksy chutzpah who caused this situation in the first place, but the terms aren't mutually exclusive either.)

Moxie - It's OK to be Unique

Learning to be independent from the early age...

Time when we were taught to blend in into the crowd and never stand out has long passed. Today, in this highly competitive world, our kids must be much stronger if they want to survive and become successful in life. So, we must teach them to become independent early, not to be afraid to think for themselves and to be different from others. Today, they need to stand out to be noticed. We all do.

Moxie - It's OK to be Different

Never fear to be different from the rest...

We are all different. Not a single person is exactly the same as the one next to him / her. Your friend, sitting next to you in a school deck is maybe sharing some of your fears and dreams and problems, but they are not "the same" as you. And this is quite OK! This world would be a totally dull place if everyone would look the same and act the same. Diversity is what makes life interesting!

Moms and Grandmas have a lots of Moxie!

They have been places, they know how the things work. They learned to stand up for what they believe, to follow and preserve until they don't reach their goals. Their determination is what keeps them going. And the hope... maybe not so much hope but a firm believe that everything will be OK, as it supposed to be. They don't give up. Ever.

It's always been a word that I was familiar with, but never thought of as something I possess. Since you pointed it out, I'm proud to say I've got some moxie in me! (thanks again)

I had no idea that the word "moxie" came from the name of a soft drink. This definitely beats most toys marketed at girls.
