Thunderbird is Mozilla's own email and news client which is free to download from their website:
http://www.mozilla.com/thunderbird/.
Thunderbird boasts many impressive features such as message tagging, improved search functions, phishing protection, leading-edge junk mail filters and a whole host of add-ons, themes and extensions.
Since Hotmail doesn't support POP or IMAP features, it makes it difficult to view your emails in a separate email client, except for Outlook and Outlook Express, where it's relatively easy. This lens will highlight what you need to do to be able to send and receive Hotmail messages from within Thunderbird, showing you which add-ons you need and how to set up an account for your email address.

How To Download and Install the Webmail and Hotmail Extensions
Here you need to download "Web-Mail-1.3.1" and "Hotmail-1.2.14". For Internet Explorer users, right click and go to "Save Target As" and for Firefox users, right click and select "Save Link As". Save these two add-ons somewhere you'll remember them and start-up Thunderbird.
While in Thunderbird, head to Tools > Add-ons and click the Install button. Find the Webmail extension that you downloaded and click open. Once the add-on has been installed, you will be prompted to restart Thunderbird. Repeat the last few steps and install the Hotmail extension in the same way, restarting Thunderbird after the add-on has been installed.
MAKE SURE YOU INSTALL THE WEBMAIL EXTENSION FIRST =)
Mozilla Thunderbird On Wikipedia
Mozilla Thunderbird is a free, open source, cross-platform e-mail and news client developed by the Mozilla Foundation. The project strategy is modeled after Mozilla Firefox, a project aimed at creating a web browser. On December 7 2004, version 1.0 was released, and received over 500,000 downloads in its first three days of release (and 1,000,000 in 10 days). As of June 2008, Thunderbird has been downloaded more than 67 million times since 1.0 release.
Configuring the Webmail and Hotmail Extensions
You will be presented with three boxes; the first two will be labelled "POP" and "SMTP", make sure these are both running first. If they aren't, make sure you are connected to the internet. In the "POP" box, there should be an input labelled "Port", delete the number that's in there and replace it with the number "995".
A warning message will appear asking you to restart the server before the changes take effect. To do this, first click the red "X" in the "POP" box. Once the server has stopped, click the green plus sign to start it running again.

Setting Up Your Hotmail Account In Thunderbird
Check the Webmail option and click next. Enter your name and your Hotmail email address (the address you want to send and receive from) and click next. You will now be asked for your Incoming User Name, again, enter your email address and click next.
The account wizard will now ask you to verify the information you have entered. Make sure the Incoming User Name and the Outgoing User Name both read as your email (Hotmail) address. Also, make sure the Incoming/Outgoing Server Name both read as simply "localhost".
Check the box asking if you want to download your messages now and click Finish. You will be asked for your password (the password you use with your Hotmail address to access your emails), enter it and chose to have the password manger save it if you wish. Your Hotmail message should begin downloading into Thunderbird immediately
Problem Solving
If messages still aren't being downloaded, and you're getting a "negative vibes" error, it could be that Hotmail is experiencing server problems. However, if they aren't, it means the Hotmail extension needs updating.
To do this, go to Tools > Add-ons, and click the "Find Updates" button. If Thunderbird finds any updates, install them, and restart Thunderbird once it prompts you to do so.
