Grinch at a Glance
The Grinch is a cartoon character created by Dr. Seuss. He first appeared in the 1957 children's book, How the Grinch Stole Christmas!. This was followed in 1966 by a popular television special also titled How the Grinch Stole Christmas!, produced by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer's MGM Animation/Visual Arts studio, and directed by Chuck Jones.
In 1977, Seuss responded to the fan request for more Grinch tales by writing Halloween Is Grinch Night, a Halloween special that aired on CBS. Like its predecessor, the sequel was recognized at the Emmy awards. In 1982, Marvel green-lit The Grinch Grinches the Cat in the Hat, which was also produced by Dr. Seuss, under his real name, Ted Geisel. This third special garnered two Emmy awards.
The Grinch is considered a Christmas standard, and parodied/featured outside the Dr. Seuss brand frequently around the holiday season. The character is referenced by the media often in instances where a holiday display is ruined by vandals, or holiday burglaries are committed. Outside Christmas, the term "Grinch" is synonymous with "grouch" or "Burkey", as in someone that shows great disdain for something wholesome.
How the Grinch Stole Christmas - The Movie
DVD How the Grinch Stole Christmas - Dr. Seuss
The most significant improvement is in the digital transfer, cleaning up fuzz and specks and restoring the proper colors to the program. While the awful earlier DVDs showed the Grinch in a mustard-yellow color, this edition restores his proper green gleam. Special features are mostly ported over from the previous DVD--the Horton Hears a Who program, a featurette on the songs, Phil Hartman's special edition version, pencil tests, etc. minus the commentary track--but there is a new 15-minute featurette, "Dr. Seuss and the Grinch: From Whoville to Hollywood." While it starts out as a fluff piece aimed at the younger set (interviews with kids, some rapping), it does provide some interesting information, including interviews with the widows of Theodore Geisel and Chuck Jones and clips of Geisel and Jones' Private Snafu. (No mention of Jim Carrey, however.) -- David Horiuchi
Every who down in Who-ville likes Christmas a lot, but the Grinch who lived just north of Who-ville did NOT! So the cuddly as a cactus Grinch (with termites in his smile and garlic in his soul) tries to wipe out Christmas for the cheerful Who-villains, only to discover: maybe Christmas, he thought doesn't come from as store. Maybe Christmas perhaps means a little bit more! Magnificently narrated by Boris Karloff and animated by cartoon legend Chuck Jones, it's an award-winning Who-roast-beast-feast of a holiday classic!
Dr. Seuss' How the Grinch Stole Christmas! (Deluxe Edition)
Forget the hideously overblown film version -- if you want the real thing, buy this double treat and enjoy the Grinch's story the way it was intended to be seen. Boris Karloff's voice lends this wonderfully inspiring story a hint of real menace, and the animation, spare and imaginative, creates an oddly familiar world that is both melancholy and Christmasey -- the perfect combo. The songs have become holiday traditions. The story of the Grinch is as much a mystery of faith and joy as it is an entertaining comedy. You will get the additional family treat of Horton Hears A Who, also an inspiring tale that explores the value of life itself. Dr. Seuss' brilliance with conceptual family entertainment is on clear display in both of these classic stories; you will not be disappointed. Merry Christmas. -- R. Penola (NYC, NY United States)

Quick, what do you think of Grinch?
How the Grinch Stole Christmas! Books and Songs
and a How the Grinch Stole Christmas! Coloring Book
Looking quite out of place and very disturbing in his makeshift Santa get-up, the Grinch slithers down chimneys with empty bags and stealing the Whos' presents, their food, even the logs from their humble Who-fires. He takes the ramshackle sleigh to Mt. Crumpit to dump it and waits to hear the sobs of the Whos when they wake up and discover the trappings of Christmas have disappeared. Imagine the Whos' dismay when they discover the evil-doings of Grinch in his anti-Santa guise. But what is that sound? It's not sobbing, but singing! Children simultaneously adore and fear this triumphant, twisted Seussian testimonial to the undaunted cheerfulness of the Whos, the transcendent nature of joy, and of course, the growth potential of a heart that's two sizes too small. This holiday classic is perfect for reading aloud to your favorite little Whos. (Ages 4 to 8)
How the Grinch Stole Christmas!
Dr. Seuss is one of the best! Is there a greater tale of good vs. evil and how that was overcome? NOPE. Don't think so. This book of the Grinch and his plan to destroy the town of "Whoville's" holiday brings the reader into the most charming and brillant tale. I think that the genius of Dr. Seuss is greatly underappreciated, and more people sholuld look to these books as a wonderful tale of love, life and hope. He's a wonderful writer who should be put up there with the best of all time!! The "Grinch" is all I really need for a great Christmas! Check it out if you haven't... :) -- Caroline P. My son loves Dr. Seuss (we usually checked them out from the library) so I was looking to buy some of his favorites for him. Then, I came across this - it includes 13 of Seuss's best including all my son's favorites (Green Eggs and Ham, The Cat in the Hat, The Sneetches, The Grinch, If I ran the Zoo ...) All for under $25! I went ahead and purchased it. Now, every night we read a couple of stories ("Green Eggs and Ham" is always one of them) and my son loves it! The only problem I found with it is that it is too heavy to be handled by young kids (under 5) alone. But it is sturdily bound and the pages are good quality. Not for trips though.-- MS (CA, USA)

Oh, the Places You'll Go!
Inspirational yet honest, and always rhythmically rollicking, Oh, the Places You'll Go! is a perfect sendoff for children, 1 to 100, entering any new phase of their lives. Kindergartners, graduate students, newlyweds, newly employeds--all will glean shiny pearls of wisdom about the big, bountiful future. The incomparable Dr. Seuss rejoices in the potential everyone has to fulfill their wildest dreams: "You'll be on your way up! / You'll be seeing great sights! / You'll join the high fliers / who soar to high heights." At the same time, he won't delude the starry-eyed upstart about the pitfalls of life: "You can get all hung up / in a prickle-ly perch. / And your gang will fly on. / You'll be left in a Lurch."
But fear not! Dr. Seuss, with his inimitable illustrations and exhilarating rhymes, is convinced ("98 and 3/4 percent guaranteed") that success is imminent. As long as you remember "to be dexterous and deft. And NEVER mix up your right foot with your left," things should work out. (All ages) --Emilie Coulter

Dr. Seuss's Sleep Book (Classic Seuss)
Shake myself awake again to tell my sleepy view... of Dr. Seuss's "Sleep Book," a childhood favorite that has survived all the insomniac years of growing up and turning a bit more vintage. So many of my childhood books have vanished somewhere along that winding time-route... somewhere on those many travels and address changes, moved from one previous life to another former life to another life begun today. Lost, but for this one. And when a family pet took a toothy chomp along the binding, no matter, I had to buy another. Children's book? Ah, for the child in all of us! For we all sleep, and we all dream. The first stretchy yawn is as delicious as the final one, and the overall feel of this Seussian masterpiece is cozy, and warm, and comforting. I remember well my fascination with the unique characters as a child, with all their quirky sleep routines. I found them fully as endearing when reading the book, over and over again, to my own children. With anticipation of grandchildren looming somewhere within the next decade... I look forward to sharing these cozy yawns with yet another generation. The book is a timeless classic. -- Zinta Aistars "Writer & Editor" (Portage, MI United States)

There's a Wocket in My Pocket! (Dr. Seuss's Book of Ridiculous Rhymes)
There's a Wocket in my Pocket is yet another prime catch in the vast sea of delectable Dr. Seuss books. It's difficult to find a Dr. Seuss book one wouldn't recommend highly, and this is no exception. Seuss's simple rhymes are consistently as amusing as they are useful; his books are bastions of creative nonsense that simultaneously encourage the joy of wordplay.
This edition of the 1974 treasure features vibrant full-color illustrations, with the added bonus of a virtually indestructible board-book format. Kids can hunt for the zamp in the lamp, the jertain behind the curtain, even the nooth grush on the toothbrush, and no matter how exuberant their exploring gets, the book will remain intact for the next reading. (Ages 0 to 4)
Another great Dr. Seuss book. The silly rhymes and interesting pictures keep the little one's attention. And as many times a day that we have to repeat the same books, it's nice to have one that isn't boring. We can recite a few lines from the book while changing diapers and it catches the childs attention long enough to finish. Dr. Seuss is always a good choice! -- "thedayz" (Iowa United States)

How the Grinch Stole Christmas (Interactive Playset & Full Screen DVD)
I must have seen this movie a kazillion times now, and I can still find enjoyment in it. My kids love it and it is the most frequently watched movie in the house. The Grinch is tame enough for two year-olds, mostly because Jim Carrey creates such a lovably gruff character that it is hard not to be taken in by him. What I enjoy most is the little Grinch, one of the many liberties Ron Howard took with the classic story and had so much fun in the process. Why we even find out the Grinch had a love interest! This is a movie that builds on the original, makes a soft statement on the commercialization of Christmas by making little Cindy Lou into a Whovian version of Virginia. There is a witty banter and playful allusions such as the dropping of car keys into a fish bowl at a Christmas party, where we are first introduced to baby Grinch as his parachuting basket gets caught up in trees and he looks in on his future household. But, Howard never loses sight of the story, retaining its rich Christmas character, and providing more depth to the Grinch. The DVD has many extra features to round out the film. Too bad it doesn't have a copy of the orginal to go with it. A real family treat! -- James Ferguson (Vilnius, Lithuania)

Dr. Seuss' Animated Televised Classics 4 - Pack
I know that some adults and teens really like the cartoons, but for me, not really. My 16 sister, Pamela (who is autistic) loves the cartoons on DVD, but I do rather not want to watch them with her (unless she forces me to). Well, since Hollywood has deranged Dr. Seuss's books, these series are the only choices for the time being. If I had a choice inwhich I would pick the Hollywood series (Cat in the Hat, Grinch) and the cartoons, I would pick the cartoons. If you have a kid who loves Seuss, then you should buy it, but parents, be warned: the cute characters sing like they had enough to drink! If you can, listen to your iPod unless you really love Seuss toons. Still, I have to admit that the cartoon characters are cute and the words they speak are better than having the Cat in the Hat (Mike Myers) say "Son of a [beep]!" -- S. Glaser (Manning,SC USA)
