M.R. James - Master of the Ghost Story
As the nights grow dark and Winter approaches, it's time to bring out the ghost stories and draw near to the fire.
If you want to be truly scared, then you have reached the right place. Montague Rhode James (1862 - 1936) was a British author who wrote some of the greatest ghost stories in the English language including "A Warning to the Curious" and "Oh, Whistle, and I'll Come to You, My Lad".
Many of M.R. James's stories were also been adapted for screen by the BBC and are available on DVD. These are short and slow-paced and utterly terrifying! You can see clips from these below.

Classic Elements of an M.R.James Ghost Story
His stories always start with the mundane and gradually descend into darkness until the horror becomes overwhelming. The main characters are generally isolated male figures such as dons and antiquaries (James himself was an academic) who cannot relate to others. This sense of isolation is sometimes reflected in the setting - a lonely beach, an single room or an empty church.
Often, the main character will discover an ancient relic which should not be disturbed. From here, on the action speeds up. Indistinct figures pursue from a distance, getting closer all the time. There is a feeling of being watched, of someone or something hidden behind the corner. A sense of unravelling and menace which usually culminates in the main character witnessing an extreme and undefined terror.
