Love Him or Hate Him - Salvador Dali is the Daddy of Surrealism!

My first encounter with a Salvador Dali Limited Edition Lithograph was back in 1979 when I was shown a framed edition and told by it owner that it was worth $500. I could not believe a picture that was signed by an artist and looked like an expensive poster could be worth that kind of money. Little did I know then that I would become a collector and an admirer of his work.

Dali's work stretches from the 1920's to the 1980's, he is a renowned painter, filmaker, photographer, sculpturer and designer of jewellery and his work is extremely controversial and collectable, he is the father of Surrealism.

I have grown to know and understand him; I found that he was deeply in love with his wife Gala and he included her in most of his work, she was his muse. Dali also included himself in many of his pictures and he is always depicted as a young boy looking on.

The Great Master Himself

Salvador Dali - The Man

Salvador Domingo Felipe Jacinto Dalí i Domènech, 1st Marquis of Púbol (May 11, 1904 ? January 23, 1989) was a Spanish Catalan surrealist painter born in Figueres.

Dalí () was a skilled draftsman, best known for the striking and bizarre images in his surrealist work. His painterly skills are often attributed to the influence of Renaissance masters.Phelan, Joseph, The Salvador Dalí ShowDalí, Salvador. (2000) Dalí: 16 Art Stickers, Courier Dover Publications. ISBN 0-486-41074-9. His best-known work, The Persistence of Memory, was completed in 1931. Dalís expansive artistic repertoire includes film, sculpture, and photography, in collaboration with a range of artists in a variety of media.

Dalí attributed his "love of everything that is gilded and excessive, my passion for luxury and my love of oriental clothes" Gibson found out that "Dalí" (and its many variants) is an extremely common surname in Arab countries like Morocco, Tunisia, Algeria or Egypt. On the other hand, also according to Gibson, Dalí's mother family, the Domènech of Barcelona, had Jewish roots. to a self-styled "Arab lineage," claiming that his ancestors were descended from the Moors.

Dalí was highly imaginative, and also had an affinity for partaking in unusual and grandiose behavior, in order to draw attention to himself. This sometimes irked those who loved his art as much as it annoyed his critics, since his eccentric manner sometimes drew more public attention than his artwork.Saladyga, Stephen Francis. The Young Salvador Dalí : 1904-1915

Salvador Dali was born Salvador Felipe Jacinto Dalí on May 11th 1904 in Figueras, in the north of Catalonia, Spain. Early in his life he had expresses an attraction for the representational art and painting, already, revealing his personality original and inspired. Dali's parents had lost a son called Salvador before Salvador Dali was born. Salvador was very disturbed when he visited the grave of his older brother only to see name on the memorial stone and he always said that he was not the dead brother but the living one. Salvador's parents provided on-guard love for their son and seemed to encourage the development of an unstable and egoistic temperament; as they had never recovered from the death of Salvador's elder brother. It was in this context of non-identity that the young Salvador Dali evolved, under the sedentary eye of his parents.

Salvador Studies took place between 1921-1927

Whereas in Paris, Dadaism is in its apogee, Dalí is admitted at the San Fernando Institute, the Art Schools of Madrid. He improves there its knowledge of the sculpture, drawing and painting. Violently disputing the capacity of his professors, Dalí is excluded of this school. He will be excluded in 1922 for incentive with the rebellion from the pupils of the school. It is at that time that he meets Lorca and Buñuel, while during his first voyage in 1926 in Paris, he will become acquainted with Picasso.

Dali's surrealist movement was from 1928 to 1937

In Paris, Dalí becomes acquainted with Breton, Eluard, Magritte and Ernst. He joined officially the surrealist group. During the summer 1929, the poet Paul Eluard and his wife Elena (Gala) return visit to the painter in his house of Cadaqués. It is the thunderbolt between Dalí and this woman. She will be his "surrealist muse", the inspirer of his life and work. Dalí exposes in Paris for the first time (11 paintings.)

During the Second World War 1939-1945

During the World War II, Dalí and Gala settled in Europe, spending the 1940 to 1948 period in America. For Salvador Dali these years were very important to him as an artist. The Art Modern Museum of New York gave to Dalí his first retrospective exhibition in 1941. In 1942, Dalí publishes its autobiography : Secret life.

The extension Dalinian work was 1961 to 1970

Dalí is increasingly more prolific: he writes and illustrates famous books, creates and designs decorations and costumes for operas, turns of films, works out new theories, carves, draws, creates jewels and pieces of furniture, mixes technical artistic, his genius does not have limit in art. His research on space and on the third dimension leads him to the study of holography.

The end of a great masters life : 23rd January 1989

In 1974, Dalí inaugurates "Teatro Museo Dalí" in Figueras in Spain. This event was followed by retrospectives in Paris and London until the end of the decade. After the death of his wife, Gala in 1982, the health of Dalí then starts to decline. Following the fire of his house in 1984, he was burned and dice at the time, his health worsens. Two years after, one establishes pacemaker to him. In this part of his life Dalí withdrew himself initially in Pubol and later in his apartment close to Teatro Museo. He died on January 23rd, 1989.

Gala his wife is buried at her home and there is a grave next to her for her beloved Salvador. But with a twist of Dali'ism, Salvador Dali has already made plans to be buried in the main hall of his Dali Museum in Figueras in Spain. Most people visiting his museum do not realise that they have just walked over his grave in the main hall. Here he is buried with many of his works of Art, his sculptures and his gold jewellery designs.
