MS and Numbness
Numbness is undoubtedly one of the most common symptoms of multiple sclerosis. In many cases the first symptom of MS that a lot of people experience is a sensation of numbness. The numbness can be in any part of the body and is most common in the arms, legs, or face.
MS and Numbness - It's an Odd Sensation
It can feel like a funny or odd sensation and does not necessarily have to affect all of the limb that it is present in. In my case it only affected the lower part of my left leg and indeed this was the first symptom that I experienced. I simply woke up one morning and noticed that the calf of my leg felt odd. When I touched it I noticed that there was no feeling there and even when I give myself a gentle nip I could not feel that either. After a couple of days I went to see a doctor and he tested the area with a pin prick which needless to say I could not feel, so he sent me on my way and basically said that we would wait and see what would happen.
MS and Numbness - It Affected my Leg First
Unknown to me at the time MS and Numbness was a common occurrence so I really give no thought to what my problem might be and MS never entered my head. The numbness in my leg went away after a few weeks but was followed soon after by optic neuritis. Obviously the alarm bells began to ring with the doctor then, and he began to send me for a series of tests which would eventually lead to a diagnosis of MS.The numbness in my leg never came back but it was replaced by a numbness in my left arm and hand which I have now had for about eight or nine years. In my opinion it is worse to have it in the hand because I have very little sensation in my fingers which leads to be dropping things constantly and not being able to get a proper grip on things. Then again because I do not have it in my legs I do not have too many walking problems so if you were looking at me or watching me you would think that I was just fine, whereas if I had in my legs it would certainly make things look a lot worse.
MS and Numbness - Is it a Change of Diet?
MS and Numbnessis something that needs to be worked on like every other symptom and over the last number of years I have paid great attention to my diet. Our bodies are ruled by the fuel that we put into them and it is only over the last hundred years or so that we have begun to eat fatty, sugary, processed and refined foods. After hundreds of thousands of years of eating natural foods like berries, seeds, nuts, pulses and fish the engine that is our body cannot cope with the sudden radical change in fuel so it should be no surprise that that engine is now beginning to break down. The change in my diet has significantly improved the symptoms of my MS (and especially MS and Numbness) because I am now getting to the root of the problem instead of trying to treat the symptoms.
