I did not know MSG was in so many things. While apparently not a problem for me, |i agree, it is fishy and unneeded. I'd rather have flavour come from where its supposed to.

Hi there it is good to see a site like this as a sufferer of heart palpatations i have to check everything i eat as msg starts it off and i end up in hospital, id love to be able to eat chinese food again but its so hard finding recipes without soy sauce, food does taste better without it but its hard to find stock and other things that make it less time consuming i have 2 young boys and dont always get time to make a really nice meal

I'm so relieved to see some public reaction to msg. If I consume it, I get violently ill. When we eat out, the waitresses are questioned, and if she doesn't know if msg is in what I order, the manager and cooks are questioned. I believe there will be a day when the FDA is forced to put a warning on foods AND restaurants that serve foods with msg. Meanwhile, I continue to fight for my life to avoid consuming it. It is EVIL!

Great lens. Left my comment above as well but thought I would say it again. Really great info.

My family avoid MSG like the plague. My kids (ages 6, 4 and 4) always ask before eating at someone else house, "Does it have MSG in it?" If I say yes they say "no thank you, I don't eat that, its poison." I taught them well.

I've been sensitive to MSG ever since I went to a Chinese restaurant for my 21st birthday. I was sick as a dog the next day and I had no idea why. So I stayed away from chinese for the next 20+ years. I went to middle eastern places instead. They were much healthier.

I always get a bad headache if I eat anything with MSG in it. Evil? Absolutely! Thanks for the MSG free recipes.

    parents watch out!
i just learned they use msg to flavor powdered milk as it loses its taste when it is dried.
i looked at baby food ingredients & a lot of them are sneaking msg in to the food that way.
    poor kids.

I love MSG. I add it to everything I cook (along with salt, sugar, and pepper).
  • KMB Nov 2, 2009 @ 6:44 pm | delete
Beware McDonalds breakfasts are also filled. Go onto any fast food website and type msg in ingredients and you will see. Most sausage, breakfast and other sausage are filled. So one may not have a problem now, but it is something that can develop. So I try my best to not give it to my kids. Places like Applebees and the like also use it alot.

I was twenty-two years old when i experienced atrial fibrillatoin,an very irregular heart beat. The doctors couldnt tell me why,but i think i know...a glutimatic acid rich lifestyle combined with heavy alcohol abuse is the perfect way to skrew the natural balance of a healthy person.THIS STUFF,AND THE PEOPLE WHO SUPPLY IT ARE EVIL.

Check out Lisa Kramer's No MSG For Me Cookbook. It has a variety of recipes. I made her cheesy potatoes last night and my family loved them. It also includes a guide for shopping for msg free ingredients. It is a great cookbook. You can find it at www.nomsgforme.com.

I hate when people use MSG because it gives me the worst migraines that I can't even listen to music or go to school I can't even have the clock plugged in. So I have to look in everything and it is really annoying I wish that there was a MSG free version of everything!
  • Karen Jan 1, 2009 @ 9:42 pm | delete
I use Braggs liquid Soy from the health food store that is just soybeans and purified water, no fermentation process. Does this mean that it is processed MSG? I am under the assumption that natural glutamic acid in its' natural state is good for you, in moderate amounts but bad if it is chemically processed. Can you correct or enlighten me on this issue? Thanks.

About your recipe for Chex Mix. MSG is made from soy beans. So, if you happen to be allergic to MSG, then you are also allergic to Worcestershire, which is mainly soy sauce.

I have been through test after test, and no Doc can figure out why I'm having dizzy spells, almost faint, after then feel sick to my stomache...I first thought maybe it was in the inner ear, but I think it might just be the MSG....I like your thoughts, and guess I will just have to eat all homemade plus fresh vegs, and fruit

Thank you for suggesting white sacue as a substitute for creamed soups. We have just figured out in the last couple months that MSG was the main culprit in my 17 year-old son's migraines. He he been migraine free ever since I got it all out of the house! But I have been struggling to find replacements for some basic ingredients (like creamed soup) in many of our family's recipes. Thanks again!

Wow is this ever a big undertaking .. if all this is true no wonder I never feel good !! Cutting lactose helped but now i see that milk and cheese and all those "lactose" foods also contain msg of some form .. im sure im allergic to msg so thanks to everyone for chiming in and good luck to all of you and me !

I was able to stop using asthma medications when I started looking for MSG in food. Your article actually didn't tell me anything I didn't already know, but I'm glad to see people spreading the word. Also, thanks for the recipes!
I would like to find a way to petition the government to get MSG out of our food supply. This stuff is beyond horrible. And it's in damn near everything!

I have been suffering from daily migraines for years now...I now know why! I am sickened that I have been unknowingly consuming MSG is such large quantities for so long, and even more sickend that I have been feeding it to my kids! Now I know and am on the lookout from now on!
  • gregg Jul 14, 2008 @ 12:35 pm | delete
i'm not an msg apologist, janice, but research shows that msg actually decreases people's craving for dessert when added to a meal. for those of you who suffer from msg related headaches or other symptoms, you should be aware that "hydrolyzed yeast" or "autolyzed protein" or other -lyzed terminology indicates that glutamate has been added to your food.

Found exactly what I was looking for - Cream Soup Recipe. MSG is EVIL!! I can tolerate it once every few days but more than that... migraine for days!

I thought we had done away with MSG after the restaurant salad and chinese food controversies. I am shocked and furious I find MSG in nearly everything now. I am back to very carefully reading not the fat/calorie content but the incredibly small print ingredients to find food that won't cause me extreme pain.

    Thank you for the info!

are there any books out there for making meals from scratch without msg or salt. i have high blood pressure too, so i dont need the salt. And im on meds for it.

It took me years to figure out that msg was what was making me feel so bad. I get a migraine right after eating it and my face feels like it is burning up. I am a true believer that msg also is making every one fat by making you crave more food. Since I have gone msg free I don't eat nearly as much and have lost weight.

Wow!!! My Husband was put on a special diet for Vertigo and one thing he desperately needs to keep away from is msg. Until I started research on msg I didn't realize how bad it is for you. My (our) whole diet will change. I will start cooking everything from scratch from now on. Thank you for this very informative sight. Susie Weber

Great job in reporting about the dangers of MSG. Now it's time for you to do a report on another product and tell the truth to the people....it's milk!
All the information you'll need is here.

write me and let me know if you'll do it.

Marnen, I guess it depends on how allergic you are! :) If you have severe reactions, you can't be careful enough. It's amazing what they sneak MSG into.
  • marnen Sep 14, 2006 @ 5:34 pm | delete
I like the organization of this lens a lot, but I disagree with much of the content. MSG is certainly overused, but I think your lens is just a bit alarmist.

I had a Japanese roommate in college and she taught me the Japanese word for MSG: ajinomoto. She also taught me you can fake the flavor change you'd get by using MSG by mixing up a few tablespoons of soy sauce and adding a teaspoon of sugar to it.

I'm allergic to MSG so I've been aware of a lot of this for years. It's very frustrating, though, to go to a restaurant where they SWEAR they don't use MSG and see things like Ramen and rice mixes and crackers and soup bases. Hello - MSG doesn't come in a can like salt... ;)

Hi, and yes I do like your lens! Especially the make-your-own recipes, I'm always looking for ideas like that. On my wish list: make-your-own soup base recipe for ramen noodles. Anyone?
