MTG Standard Card Evaluations

Magic is an everlasting evolving game that has card prices fluctuate depending on what decks are popular. Cards that even start from less than a dollar and raises itself to 10 dollars (Splintertwin anyone?). We are going to be looking at popular cards in Standard, Modern, EDH, and Legacy and evaluate the importance of the cards.

Snapcaster Mage

Innistrad

Magic: the Gathering - Snapcaster Mage - Innistrad

Amazon Price: $17.30 (as of 06/03/2012)Buy Now

Snapcaster Mage is a staple in any blue deck. In the Blue-Red (UR) Delver deck, you can flash him in to chump block something and you choose the brimstone volley in your graveyard to have flashback so that you can do 5 damage to anything. The combos that can be made with Snapcaster is just amazing. If you play him, a playset will eventually be needed.

Temporal Mastery

Avacyn Restored

Magic: the Gathering - Temporal Mastery (81) - Avacyn Restored

Amazon Price: $13.00 (as of 06/03/2012)Buy Now

They have revitalized Time Walk, well kind of. Just hope it's not in your opening hand.

Inkmoth Nexus

Mirrodin Besieged

Magic: the Gathering - Inkmoth Nexus - Mirrodin Besieged

Amazon Price: $2.65 (as of 06/03/2012)Buy Now

Inkmoth Nexus, a true staple in every deck. Any pro standard player HAS to have a playset of this uber man-land card. You animate the land, and now it's a 1/1 flying artifact infect creature and when animated, you buff it up in all ways that you can. Also, it's great to have since it's not susceptible to day of judgment effects while it's not a creature but watch out for doom blade.

Wurmcoil Engine

Scars of Mirrodin

Magic: the Gathering - Wurmcoil Engine - Scars of Mirrodin

Amazon Price: $11.99 (as of 06/03/2012)Buy Now

This is a beast of an artifact creature. If I asked you to name an artifact creature that had deathtouch, Wurmcoil engine is the first and only card name you would name, well that and the wurm token it creates. If anybody pulls out a wurmcoil engine, good luck getting rid of it because if you don't have an answer for it immediately (revoke existence), then you're in a world of hurt (scoop).

Phantasmal Image

m12

Magic: the Gathering - Phantasmal Image - Magic 2012

Amazon Price: $8.79 (as of 06/03/2012)Buy Now

Do you like copying your opponent's strongest creatures or even your own? This is the kind of card that can turn the whole game around. Copy anything just by paying 2 mana, though it has "if it gets targeted, sacrifice it." So copy a wurmcoil engine and if your phantasmal image gets targeted, sac it and get 2 3/3 tokens with deathtouch on one and lifelink on the other. Also, One uber combo that I found recently is that it can copy casting cost of a creature as well. What I'm saying is you copy an opponent's wurmcoil engine (6 casting cost) and you can birthing pod your phantasmal image and pull out an Elesh Norn (7 casting cost) while getting the 2 3/3 tokens from the copied wurmcoil engine. This combo equals WIN.

Birthing Pod

New Phyrexia

Magic: the Gathering - Birthing Pod - New Phyrexia

Amazon Price: $0.01 (as of 06/03/2012)Buy Now

Birthing Pod is one of the most versatile artifacts in Standard at the moment. Make sure if you run birthing pod to have a playset of Birds of paradise and some phantasmal images. Birthing Pod decks are just filled with Combos infinite that allows you to pull out the cards you need in any situation. For example, you have a 4 casting creature out and the opponent had a troublesome artifact (opponent's birthing pod) or land (gavony township) out, birthing pod your 4 caster and bring out an acidic slime and problem averted. Now next turn if the opponent had some important creatures that are tapped, you birthing pod your acidic slime for a sunblast angel and destroy all his/her tapped creatures. Next turn you pod it for an Elesh Norn. Do you see the possibilities of this card like I do?

Dismember

New Phyrexia

Magic: the Gathering - Dismember - New Phyrexia

Amazon Price: $0.01 (as of 06/03/2012)Buy Now

Dismember is one of the best removal spells used in almost any deck that doesn't require black to use. If you don't have a playset of dismember, you should consider having it.

Angelic Destiny

m12

Magic: the Gathering - Angelic Destiny - Magic 2012

Amazon Price: $9.50 (as of 06/03/2012)Buy Now

This card is uber. It makes one of your creatures to fly, first strike and become an angel. The best part of the card is that if the enchanted creature dies, then angelic destiny goes back to your hand. Worth it in my book.

Hero of Bladehold

Mirrodin Besieged

Magic: the Gathering - Hero of Bladehold - Mirrodin Besieged

Amazon Price: $9.00 (as of 06/03/2012)Buy Now

The hero of bladehold. Such a great card to have in white aggro. It attacks with battle cry with 2 1/1 soldier tokens coming in attacking. Such a strong threat while having a 4 CMC (converted mana cost). I have a playset, do you?

Kitchen Finks

Shadowmoor

Magic: the Gathering - Kitchen Finks - Shadowmoor

Amazon Price: $2.39 (as of 06/03/2012)Buy Now

Kitchen Finks + Melira, sylvok outcast + Viscera Seer ( or pretty much any continual sac mechanism) = Infinite Life.

Heartless Summoning

Innistrad

Magic: the Gathering - Heartless Summoning - Innistrad

Amazon Price: $0.01 (as of 06/03/2012)Buy Now

Though your creatures will have -1 / -1, any creature you cast will cost 2 colorless to cast which can give you an uber edge over your opponent. A wurmcoil engine that only costs 4 colorless for a 5/5 deathtouch lifelink and splits into 2 2/2 creatures. Worth it in my book. And who knows what kind of combos will be imaginable when newer sets in the block come out.

Bloodgift Demon

Innistrad

Magic: the Gathering - Bloodgift Demon - Innistrad

Amazon Price: $0.01 (as of 06/03/2012)Buy Now

In Mono-black, this card puts on the pressure to the opponent since you will be drawing 2 cards every turn. It is basically a consecrated sphinx alternate for black.

Mirror-mad Phantasm

Innistrad

Magic: the Gathering - Mirror-Mad Phantasm - Innistrad

Amazon Price: $0.01 (as of 06/03/2012)Buy Now

This card is definitely sleeping. He's a 5/1 flyer that can dodge by going back into the deck and milling until he comes up and enters the battlefield again. This can be ridiculous since Innistrad specializes in graveyard manipulation. So of course, you should be playing Snapcaster Mage in this deck as well. Watch out for graveyard removal like surgical extraction and Nihil Spellbombs.

Best Card Pick

Dark Ascension

The card we are looking at is LINGERING SOULS. Similar to midnight haunting but is a sorcery than an instant. But the best part is its flashback ability of just 1B. This card is dangerous and is being played by many. Have those ratchet bombs ready.
