Tips for your MT job search

You've just graduated with a certificate in medical transcription or an HIT degree, or you're an experienced MT looking for a change. You need to know the best places to look so you don't waste your precious time and energy on dead ends or worse - scams.

Below are just a few hints to help you in your job search. If you aren't in the MT field but are still interested in transcription, be sure to check out the General Transcription section in this lens.

Feel free to take the poll near the end of the page and give your opinion of the best job search sites. Go ahead and sign the guestbook at the bottom and let me know if you have had any success with these hints. I would love to get your feedback.

If you just happened to stumble on to this page and you don't know what the heck I'm talking about or are interested in an MT career, check out my Medical Transcription FAQ and Is Medical Transcription Right For You pages.

Field specific online job forums

There are many sites devoted to the medical transcription field. MT Jobs is one of the most well known and respected places on the web for employers and potential employees alike.

Forums where MTs gather are a wealth of information on the ins and outs of the career itself as well as sources for job seekers. MT Stars and MT Chat are the top two that come to mind. All of these are listed in the Job Searching Links section.

Freelance Job Searching Sites

Sites like Guru and Elance are well-known freelance job sites.

Both have a bid system set up where an employer posts what they are looking for and selects independent contractors from the bids they receive. There is a lot of competition for bids however.

Basic memberships are free at Guru. Higher level memberships are purchased starting quarterly between $29.95 to $99.95. These paid memberships have more jobs available to bid on. I have seen quite a few postings for overflow transcription jobs.

I haven't tried Elance but have heard positive things about the service. Membership fees are taken from earnings.

Links for both are listed below.

Job Searching Links

MT Jobs
One of the most reputable sites for MT employment.
MT Stars Job Seeker's Forum
The job forum on MT Stars, a popular site for discussion of all topics related to medical transcription.
Guru
Guru is a freelancer's site to bid on jobs from many fields including MT, programming, web design and much more.
Elance
Another freelance site to bid on jobs from many fields.

But how can I get experience if no one gives me a job?

The age-old question I know. Don't let job postings asking for 2-3 years experience get you down. If you have gone to an accredited program or another well-known online MT school, go ahead and apply for those positions.

General Transcription

Get your foot in the door

If you have a certificate from a reputable online school such as Career Step, M-TEC or Andrews, many employers will be very willing to have you take their employment test. My lens, My Medical Transcription Education Experience, will help you avoid some of the pitfalls in choosing a school.

But if you want to break into general transcription, check out the links below. General transcription can be done for any subject and in many forms. An example would be a recorded business conference where you will need to transcribe verbatim what was said by each person.
CastingWords Transcription Services
A freelance company that posts its jobs on Amazon's Mechanical Turk. You need to take a transcription test to qualify. **Unfortunately, the link to their jobs section is broken at this time. Check Amazon Mechanical Turk link below.
Ubiqus
Ubiqus offers many services including medical and verbatim transcription, summary writers, interpreters and more.
Tiger Fish
Many types of transcription. Instructions for the employment test are on the website.
Amazon Mechanical Turk
Amazon Mechanical Turk is a system where employers post jobs that are taken on a first-come, first-serve basis. Use transcription as a search term. Not great pay but good to get experience.

Important!

Watch Out for Scams

Sites like Guru and Elance legitimately charge a fee for you to use their employment service. There is a lot of competition on bidding sites though.

You will also see ads all over the web from companies claiming to have a job lined up for you. All you have to do is just give them $$$$ for the training. It's a scam! Don't fall for it.

MT is like any other job. You apply, the boss thinks you are qualified or not then hires or doesn't hire you accordingly.
